Compatibility issues
Elsa's back, and anyone who was previously loled by her will notice she's not offering an apology for that.

She flops into a Nexus Chair and lolls her head back, looking exhausted. Finally, she lifts her head and looks around. "How do you convince someone you used to be compatible with that you're not anymore?"

"Ah, now that one I might have to answer from the other end," Miles said. "In my case, it took a lot of persistence on the part of my exes. Though some of those," okay most of those, before Ekaterin, and even then there was a long catalog of him being an infatuated idiot, "were my own damn fault, as both of us were trying to ignore the future until it hit. Being able to say 'I will follow you anywhere, except into retirement on your home world' does put a damper on things."

Elsa looks over at the little man- good lord, he was short!- then smiles. "Well, persistence hasn't paid off yet, but I guess I haven't been trying very hard. Nostalgia makes it hard, you know?"

Two inches shorter than Ed Elric. It has to be a Nexus record.

"Oh, yes. In my case, it helped Ellie that I had to return home and she refused to follow me, and I refused to stay with her if it meant I couldn't go. It's a peculiarity of my family, I'm afraid -- doing our duty, even when it makes us miserable. Miserable in the short term, at least -- it's been eight years now, and both of us have moved on.

"But it was a conflict years in the making. We talked about it when we first started dating, and ended up just putting it off. For years."

The Nexus has seen Tasslehoff. I think he holds the record.

Elsa shook her head. "I haven't put off talking about it, but it doesn't seem to do any good. She just keeps brooding and won't move on. I worry about her, I still care, for chrissakes, but it just can't work anymore. We're too different."

Miles can take the human adult record then.

"Maybe you need to give her time to move on," Miles said. "It's not like people do it in an instant."

He's welcome to it. What a little man!

"I know," she said forlornly. "But she's had time and she's not getting a whit better."

How much time had it been? Months, that was for sure. Envy didn't know how much time had passed in Delilah's world before she came to the Nexus. Not long, he didn't think.

"It's been months," she said somewhat evasively.

"Has it gotten better at least? I mean, if it's been months, some change would be good. Does your... does she have someone to talk to? I know when I got into a funk, eventually someone would come drag me out and force me to be social." Usually his mother, sometimes Ivan. Or Elena, back when he was Admiral Naismith. "Back home -- my home, I mean -- a year is customary for mourning the death of a spouse. If you two were that involved, it could well be that long for a break-up."

Envy really wished he knew how long it'd been in Delilah's world. That would help a lot.

Elsa sighed. "A year? I don't think her heart will handle a year. It's like watching her waste away. She's got people to talk to, friends who care about her, but she just keeps fading away from us."

"That, definitely sounds like she needs an intervention," Miles said. "Or... I don't know." He wished his mother were here, since Miles generally subscribed to the belief that Cordelia Naismith Vorkosigan was a genius when it came to others' emotional lives. Of course, the whole situation may strike too close to home, with his father's death. And far be it for Miles to interrupt his mother's own grieving process. "But, I agree. That's not a good sign." He threw up his hands.

Getting Delilah professional help sounded good, but good luck getting her to cooperate with it. It was like she was waiting for an alternate of Envy (William) to show up and sweep her off her feet again. Problem was, Envy had been watching long enough to know that people from that time era just didn't show up. The landlord's brother seemed to be the only exception.

"I don't think she'd appreciate me siccin' a shrink on her," Elsa said with a frown. "I'll see what I can do. Thanks, sweetie."

Thinky face is thinky! In all honesty, Envy remembered Ed. He was one of those OTHER Elrics that Envy didn't give a damn about, and yes, he remembered the sparkle incident. He thought it was hilarious.

"I don't remember that. I never 'loled' any drinks. I've shared drinks, but I don't get shit that ain't from Greed's, sweetie."

Now Elsa looked genuinely surprised. Hell, Envy was surprised. That shit had come from Greed's. "Hey, I don't trust any bar that ain't Greed's, sugar, So I don't know why he told you that, but I bought that shit there. Spent a pretty penny on it, too."

Elsa's expression turned serious again. "I got a girl that ain't gettin' over me, and I'm tryin' to convince her we just ain't compatible anymore. Any ideas how to do it? 'Cause she's pinin' and it's killin' me to watch."

"Well, what's changed is me. I'm not into happily ever after anymore," she said. "We were involved for a pretty long time, and the change was pretty abrupt, I guess. At least for her. So she's havin' a hard time acceptin' it."

Ed frowns and scratches his neck. "The best thing I can think of is to just...do your best to help her while she works her feelings out. I mean, it does sound like you still care about her as a friend at least, otherwise you'd have just avoided her completely."

"Of course I do, sweetie. If you knew her, you'd feel for her, too. She's a good girl. But I just ain't interested in settlin' down anymore. Part of me wishes I still did, just 'cause I hate seein' that look on her face."

A very big part of Envy wishes he were human enough to take her back and take care of her, but that's a whole 'nother issue.

Not that Delilah wouldn't give him another chance. Envy just cringed at being that in touch with his human side still. Too afraid of it. Oh Envy, you so silly.

"I've broken it off, but I still care, you know? I just don't do happily ever after no more. I prefer a more open lifestyle."
