There's a new face in the Nexus, hiding behind a pair of large sunglasses and an amicable smile. If he's caught off guard by all this craziness, he's certainly not showing it--he just calmly stands near the sign, smoking.

Only the scattering of discarded cigarette butts around his feet gave away his nervousness. Yohji always smoked too much when he was caught off-guard or disturbed. And, well, very little was more disturbing than finding yourself where you weren't supposed to be, with no real idea how you got there.

"Anyone have any ideas for a birthday present for a kid that says he doesn't want anything?"

"If he likes to read, or write or draw, or some other activity, something that would go with it would work. Or a gift card to a store, or even just a day trip out somewhere," Russell suggested. "A gift doesn't need to be a big or expensive thing. It can be a small thing, something seemingly insignificant but for the person getting it, still says that who they are and what they like was kept in mind. It can even be a gift of your time, which is something nobody else can give them."

The idea of Ken doing anything of the like is...kinda hilarious, admittedly. Yohji can't help but snicker. "He's more of the active type. And he hates acknowledging his birthday. But he's legal now, you know? Seems a damn shame to let that milestone go by unmarked."

"Problem is, he's threatened to not cook for a week if any of us got him something, and well. Cooking skills are kind of valuable in a house full of confirmed bachelors on retail budgets."

"You could give him a night off from cooking, perhaps? Not so much getting him anything as relieving him from having to do anything?"

"Crazy guy likes it. He says it's relaxing." Yohji holds his hands out helplessly. "He didn't even want to take the day off from work. We offered to cover it for him, but he showed up anyway."

Melisan looked like he had come in from the cold, in a cloak and hat. "A nice meal with the family with our favorites if possible is usually what we got. My family didn't have that much spare money, though there was always plenty of food."

"Sounds about like the only idea we had. I had. Only reason we know about it is our boss telling us, so." Omi saw nothing wrong with wishing Ken a happy birthday!

"No family, then?" Melisan asked. "You don't have to answer that."

"Not that I'm aware of. Never mentions his mom, no sibs. He mentioned that he and his old man weren't on very good terms."

To put it mildly. Nope, no family. Seems to be a trait, with these boys.

Sarah grins--oh, how she knows that trouble. "What kind of stuff does he like? He might not want anything, but there's probably something that would be useful to him or that he'd like regardless."

"He likes soccer, mostly. Rides a motorcycle, cooks, other than that he doesn't really do much. Poor guy doesn't even have a girlfriend. Last one didn't work out." She emigrated. :( Sad day.

Sarah taps her chin and thinks. "Well, with cooking there's always different things to find with that, but maybe you could get him out and talking with people instead? Just have a night out, get him some fresh air and maybe loosen up a bit?"

"Maybe. If I try it, I'll let you know how it goes." He'll have to find some rope. And maybe pray.

She laughs. "So he's a really stubborn shut-in, then."

"Well, I guess there's nothing really wrong with that. But a guy should have some fun on his birthday, at least!"

"Oh, I'd have to all right. Kid's got some funny hangups, drinking's one of them. I'd have to watch it or I'd be hungover and bruised the next day." Ken would not approve. Doesn't mean Yohji's not considering it. After forcing the first couple of drinks down his throat it was sure to get easier, right?
