Ken sighs, feeling rather small in his worn Army jacket, sitting cross-legged on the ground near the sign with his faithful dog to one side.

He really doesn't want to ask this. But the alternative of breaking down in front of strangers like he'd just done was completely unacceptable.

"...Is there any place to get prescription medications around here that'll just take your word for what you're on?"

Ken hates doctors. :( Doesn't want to have an office visit before he gets his drugs, tyvm.

Winry had been on her way home from the market when she heard the question, and she stopped, looking at the man who was obviously a vet of some sort. "It depends on what you're on and why," she said, tucking a bit of hair behind her ear. "I'm a doctor, and between my RN and my uh. Pharmacist, I guess you could call him, we can get ahold of most anything, and what we can't get ahold of, we can make."

Ken jumps slightly--stupid, you asked a question expecting to get a goddamn answer--but...rough day.

He sighs and brushes his bangs up and away from his face, revealing briefly the jagged scar just below his hairline, hand shaking slightly.

"Shorter answer would be 'what am I not on,'" he said sarcastically, sighing. "Amitriptyline, propranolol, diazepam...and that's just what I can remember." There's also a sleeping aid for when the anxiety attacks won't let him wind down and actually rest.

"As for why, severe anxiety disorders." You can probably guess why, Winry, since you noticed right away that he's a vet.

Winry chewed on her lip, listening to Ken list off his medicines. "Most of what we have to treat mental disorders are herbal supplements," she said, "but that's just what's on-hand. Those sound like medicines that are purely chemical, right? I think Ed can make some up, then."

She thought for a second. "You don't happen to have a comprehensive list of everything you're on, do you? Ed will need to look up their chemical formulas, and unless you have objections, I'd like to look up to see if there's anything that can be substituted that might be safer, or let you start weaning off the medicines. I'm not much of a psychiatrist, but like I said, I am still a doctor, and there's nobody more versed in the chemistry of the brain than Ed, so between him and Russell and myself, we can help you."

Doctor Craig has tried that, the weaning off. :< It hasn't worked, and largely has made everything worse. Thus his dislike for doctors and their screwing with everything. His head's wasted enough already, thank you very much. He needs his Ran back, then everything will be...well, not puppies and rainbows, but better.

Ken sighs. He thinks there's a medical information slip in his wallet, and he opens it up to see--it's behind the nearly worn-out photograph, which falls out when he pulls the slip of paper out, falling half-open to reveal a group of men standing in front of a helicopter. He closes his eyes and lets out a shaky breath before picking the photograph back up and handing the square of paper over.

"Sorry. This hasn't been a good day." To say the least. He's pretty much forgotten what those feel like.

Yes, but see, Winry knew what she was doing better than those well-intentioned but really rather useless doctors they had in the '60s and '70s.

She gave him a sympathetic smile. "It's okay, I understand." She looked over the information on the slip of paper, frowning. "I don't recognize all of these drugs," she admitted, "but a couple I do and... no offense, but what was your doctor thinking, putting you on some of these? These are sedatives I wouldn't give to someone who wasn't an automail patient."

"I don't know. He's been switching the medications and dosages so much that I barely know up from down anymore." Ken, for his part, has been floating in a sea of apathy for the last year or so. He just does not give a shit.

"I just...need something to deal with it. Lest I go breaking down in a full-blown anxiety fueled panic attack in front of some poor bastard here. Again." He would prefer not to get the funny farm called on his happy ass, thanks.

Winry smiled. "I understand. You're not the first person I've helped for some of these things. Here." She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small business card.

Elric Health Clinic
Dr. Winry Rockbell M.D.
Russell Tringham, RN

The back has a simple map. "This is where the clinic is. Why don't you give me about an hour to get back and get Ed and Russell, and look up some of these, and we'll get to work on getting you your medicines."

Ken sighed again--in relief instead of weariness this time. "Thank you," he says, sincerely. It'd be nice to be able to sleep again, even if he'd have to worry about it getting cold next.

At least Mare would probably be taking care of The Cat. Even so he'd probably come home to dead mice stashed in his house slippers when he found his way back...God, Mare would be so worried...

Winry smiled. "You're welcome. We'll see you soon then, Mister Hidaka." Yes, she caught his name on that medical paper.

Lucky for Ken, the clinic is at an apartment complex, so you may not have to worry about where to stay when it gets cold.

He's used to that. His jacket still has his name on the front after all.

"See you then." He tries a smile--pretty successful, save for the eyes. His smile doesn't show in his eyes anymore.

"Sure, you can get anything here," Claude says, sightly behind Ken. Ken probably passed Claude by, seeing as Claude was invisible until just before he started talking. "Doesn't mean it's going to be safe."

Oh Jesus fuck someone sneaking up behind him like that is probably the last thing Ken needs right now. He jumps to his feet and whirls around faster than one would probably expect, backing up a little and generally acting very defensive. He relaxes marginally when he has a little time to see who was speaking.

"Jesus Christ don't fucking do that!"

Claude looks unimpressed, before saying defensively. "Not my fault if you didn't notice me."

"If you were there half a minute ago, I would have," Ken bites back, trying to not go into a full-blown panic attack. Again. God he fucking hated it when people snuck up on him.

Claude for his part gives no indication that he actually was invisible, instead looking at Ken as if its his own fault for not noticing he was there.

"Jesus." He brushed his bangs back with a shaking hand, letting them fall back over his face.

"And that's pretty much the same everywhere. No guarantee of safety." Shrug. He's used to it.
