Current music:Soul Searching - Chantal Kreviazuk

"You were searching for a soul, tearing yourself apart just to become whole..."
It had been a while since Riza had gone around the obnoxious sign, much less to ask anything of her own. But it was the best and quickest way she could think to accomplish what she needed to find out.

"I'm wondering if there's anyone here who is familiar and experienced with magic that can relate to a person's soul, or soul energy, or anything along those lines," she said, "and barring that, does anyone know how I could get in touch with Filia Ul Copt? A woman who looks about my age, maybe a little younger, with very long blonde hair, blue eyes, and pointed ears?"

You're looking for Filia?

"I am," Riza said. "We haven't seen her in a while, and I'm not certain how to get in touch with her. She's one of the few mages my family knows and trusts. You know her?"

Edward perks at hearing the question, turning with his hands still in his pockets. "Well, it's not magic but I have some skill in manipulating souls to an extent. What's going on?"

Riza smiled a bit, although it was lopsided and not entirely happy. "We're trying to avoid any undue bargains in this regard, but it's in relation to the sort of soul-crossing that happened whenever an alternate of you sealed Al's alternate into the armor."

"The only price they've ever asked since we got saddled with the deal was giving me a gigantic headache, so you don't need to worry in that regard." Ed's humor fades at the second part. "During the transmutation? I can make a few guesses about the effect of that, but Al would know more about it. I'm guessing this has to do with your husband's health?"

Her smile was wry. "You're very perceptive," she said. Then paused, and added, "Edwards usually are in matters of alchemy, anyway."

It was other matters in which Edwards could be notoriously oblivious.

Celena offered an apologetic smile. "I'm afraid I know very little about magic, and what little I am familiar with, I don't believe relates to a person's soul, as much as their fate. The only one I know of for certain that might have an answer would be the king of Fanelia, and I've a feeling that would be a very long shot, as the saying goes."

"Probably, Celena." Riza sighed. "It's a bit more complicated than fate, I think. It deals with actual souls getting tangled up, like a psionic bond, in a sense."

Celena frowned, reluctantly digging into her memories for anything that sounded similar from her own... rather unique situation.

Unfortunately, it didn't seem quite the same. Still, she'd feel terrible if there were a similarity that might help the family. "I am to assume we are speaking of two separate people, born in two separate bodies?"

It was never a good thing when an Elric or someone closely associated to an Elric was asking about souls and soul energy. Envy was on one of his very infrequent trips into the Nexus (hey, New York City keeps him busy, and the twins keep him even busier) in his occasional quest to hunt down a certain necromancer/alchemist from another timeline when he saw a Riza at the sign.

Her question worried him a bit. Especially since once he looked at her again, he realized that was the one married to the apartment manager that Envy's younger brothers liked to keep an eye on.

"Magic's the wife's area," he answered, shoving his hands into his pockets. "But I know a few things about soul energy."

Seeing him gave her a start - there was something about his eyes that definitely wasn't her brother-in-law, but at the same time, no Envy would be caught dead wearing that face if he weren't adapted away from Dante's brainwashing.

Then the mention of the wife- oh, the one from New York.

"Well, this is a bit tricky to explain, as I'm reluctant to go into too much detail," Riza said, "but would you or your wife happen to know about how to repair a broken bond, it's been described as similar to a psionic bond, but it involves souls?"

Reluctant or not, Envy still got the message, loud and clear. "You mean like what my brothers have?" Well, technically not that crazy intense, but that was the Gate's fault, Envy wasn't really counting that. "It's just a soul transmutation. Fucks things up as much as a psi-bond that snaps does until it's repaired, though."

Risen. Mittens.

Riza had heard many strange things in the Nexus since she first moved there some years ago. But she decided that "risen mittens" was certainly in the top ten.

Mental images of Buddy Christ Mittens assaulted her poor brain, and she reminded herself to remember to maul Al for showing her that macro once she got home.

"I don't think mittens would help much here, no."

Right. So zombie-making mittens. Got it. They were having a close competition in Riza's brain for the weirdest thing about that day, with Envy as a father still in the forefront.

But zombie-making mittens was a very close second.

"Nope," she said. "Definitely not anything like my problem at hand. This is apparently one soul in two bodies that's been severed."

"How de', ma'am."

Dag's definitely a newcomer to the Nexus, as he still has that disconcerted look in his eyes, especially at The Sign. Riza you might notice that the gentleman who addressed you, while looking like he stepped out of a frontiersman movie, is also missing his left hand. Or rather, has a hook and a complicated looking harness that disappears into his sleeve.

"I don't always know what people speak about when they talk of souls, but it sounds to me what I'd be calling ground. And, well, I'm a groundsetter, or an apprentice, at least. I can see what I can tell you, ma'am. If you're needing more expertise than I can provide, I can see if I can drag my teacher into this place."

Dag looks a bit old for apprenticeship -- around forty, maybe or a bit older.

"Hello," Riza said, offering a small smile. "Hm. The description I gave you, that sounds like what in your world and line of work, you call 'ground'?"

She thought about that for a moment. "We seem to have a problem with one soul in two bodies, and the connection between them has been severed. Does this sound at all like anything you'd know about?"

Dag looked thoughtful. "Not so sure about the one-soul thing. That's powerful magic. But a connection..." he thoughtfully held out his left wrist, playing with a cord tied around it. "We do something like that in string-binding. Marriage. Anchor ground to cord, entangle the cords, then trade them. I've used the same technique a couple times to anchor other gorundwork. Anything I'd do to a person's ground itself would just be absorbed after a while -- it's self-renewing."

Dag paused. "I don't know if it would do you any good, ma'am. A Lakewalker, or someone with groundsense would be able to feel the other person's life in the cord as long as the person was alive and the cord was good. To a fa- er, someone without groundsense, it's jsut a pretty bracelet."

Riza frowned, thinking. "That may or may not work. Probably not, but we're exploring every alternative, and given the people in question, I'm not ruling that out just yet. Might I have your name and where I might find you? I'm Riza Elric, and I help run the Elric Apartments."
