what the fuuuuck
There is a man in the nexus.

This, on its own, is not unusual. It's possible that even with the added qualifiers making him unique, it's not going to be all that interesting to 90% of nexusgoers. Let's go through said qualifiers:

He's pushing six foot (not quite, and that half inch really kills him, not that he'd admit it), mid forties. Well built and fit for his age, which you can really tell because his jacket isn't zipped and his tshirt has been torn open. There's a handprint shaped scar over his relatively sparsely haired chest -- in between the scar tissue forming the handprint, there's a bullet wound scar, as well, over his heart. It looks recent. He's wearing a uniform that could be military, with his Atlantis expedition patch on one shoulder and the United States flag on the other. He seems to be unarmed.

He also seems to be really fucking confused. 'Where am I' doesn't begin to cover it, so he skips that one.

"Life ever given you a second chance you didn't know what to do with?"

That seems to about do it.

Wow, maybe he went to one of those parties over where Anne lives? She's not into branding, but hey, maybe that's what that handprint is. Wait-- what if he's someone that Ryan and Mike know, from the base? He seems like he'd fit in, though she doesn't know enough about the military to guess at which branch he's in or what rank he might be.

Well, isn't that question rather timely? Assuming all goes as planned of course. "I think I'd rather like that luxury myself. A chance to do some things over again."

Sumner -- Marshall to his mother and Mack to his friends, but he's Sumner right now -- turns to answer the young woman who answered his ever so appropriate question.

"Not quite the kind of second chance I'm looking at, ma'am, but I can think of a few things I'd do different."

"No?" But aren't second chances generally a good thing? She's hoping they are, really, and that her mess will soon be untangled.

"What would you choose to do different then?" Wait! Did he just ma'am her? Adding the title quickly, "Sir."

Under more normal circumstances, he might hide a small smile at the quick addition of a title to her address of him. However, he died about ten minutes ago. He's not feeling that smiley.

"Few things here and there." He makes a brief, aborted gesture, and after a moment and looking slightly injured, he zips his jacket up. B| ladies do not need to see Mack Sumner all hanging out, okay.

"Uh, you okay there?" Because if that's someone Ryan and Mike know who might possibly be kinky AND really did get branded, did he get the right kind of aftercare? At the moment, she's figuring not.

"I can see about getting that wound dressed if you like. Sir." Oops, almost forgot it again. Jeez, care to focus a little there Ellie?

He blinks blankly at her for a second, and then unzips to look down at his chest--at which point he starts swearing. Colourfully.

"--goddamned son of a bitch!" he glares upwards, his frustration almost palpable and obvious in the tense lines of his body and clenched fists. The calm that follows is forced, but steadying. "I'd appreciate it, if you don't mind."

"You might say that." Martha's observed him for a few minutes now. She doesn't have her white coat on, so she's just a girl in the Nexus, by all appearances.

"Excuse me, sir? I see you've gotten some medical treatment already, but I'm a doctor if you'd like an examination."

Dead people coming back to life is no longer shocking to Martha, but it is still certainly uncommon.

Doctor. Yeah, he could probably use one of those, he figures, although the dressing he's got now is making him feel a little better about the situation. Insofar as he can.

"If you wouldn't mind having a look, doctor, I won't mind sitting still a while longer."

Martha nods. Her bedside manner is slightly better than her actual technique, if we're being honest pretty good, but she's not sure how receptive he'd be to the usual routine she gives to make a patient feel more at ease. So she just takes a step forward and reaches up to take his wrist and test his pulse.

"My name is Martha Jones," she tells him, somewhat thankful that she doesn't have to add the Doctor part now, "Can you tell me what you remember?"

Her gaze is on her watch as she asks.

There's a long pause, but it doesn't look like he doesn't remember -- rather, he seems to be debating exactly what he can tell her.

"I got a small problem here, Dr Jones," he says, at length. "I remember it just fine, but the information is classified."

Well, he's just ensured that Martha will be endlessly curious about what happened. She looks up (waaay up, Martha is five foot two) at him with raised eyebrows.

"Pulse is normal." Pretty impressively low resting rate, actually, for a guy in his forties. "I'm sorry, I'm afraid I don't know your name?"

We'll get to that 'classified' thing in a minute.

"Colonel Marshall Sumner, ma'am." He's polite, if not especially forthcoming. Maybe he'll be more up front about things when he finds more out about the nexus! Then again, maybe not.

He taps over the dressing Ellie gave him, around about where his heart is. "I can tell you it was probably the bullet that did me in." Sheppard, who in fairness was beginning to grow on him, was a good shot, he could say that for the man. This wasn't quite the way he envisioned making use of the major's talents.

Uniforms are bad, very bad, could be them but scars though, are intriquing so instead of just sticking to the shadows and watching/listening to the others like normal she comes a tad closer to the man. But wait, am supposed to answer question, right? Right! But can watch scar too! That's right too.

"Chance, roll of the dice. Snake eyes. Roll the bones. Uh huh, second, third, and fourth chances. Don't know what to do with them."

Oh, great. Not only is he dead and apparently bringing pretty young women out of the woodwork, one of them is batshit insane. Mack's life just gets better and better.

"The way I understand it, you have to do something with them to need more."

...logic?

He's spoken yes, she hears but it takes her a minute or two to acknowledge the sounds. She glances away from his scar for the first time and grins before looking back down. It's not going away, lucky!

"Of course have to do something. Go to the black and come back is something. Again and again. Been to the black? Is why have?" *she points to his scar.*

Now that makes her laugh. Now she knows the right words, the right answer to what he can do with second chance! The lines in her head lined up right for a change.

"Move faster. Or duck. Is what can do with second chance." *big proud grin*

The girl in the strange, ragged, almost ratty-looking black robe that also seems to have a hint of a sparkle to it gives him a knowing look. It might also be construed as sympathetic, but then again, maybe not. She physically looks young enough to be his daughter, but there's something about her eyes that says she might be old enough to be his mother, or grandmother, or an ancestor from way, way back.

She studies the scar on his chest for a moment, and nods.

"I think you'll find that a lot of people in this place have."

Sympathy looks a lot like pity when you're in a foul mood, and he is, despite the fact he only really looks mildly cranky. Therefore, he doesn't want to see it and won't construe it that way.

'Appearances can be deceiving' is something you learn fast when you work for the SGC. He pays more attention to that something about her eyes than he does the robe or the youthful looks.

"Expect that's right, ma'am." He considers this for a moment, and looks briefly wry. "It'd be damned amazing if there were any other kind of second chance than one you don't know what to do with."

Mildly cranky doesn't seem to particularly faze her. Her lips twitch just a little bit at the ma'am.

"Sometimes you know. Other times, you don't. It depends on whether the second chance is something you fought for, or something that was pushed -- or maybe gifted? -- on you. I guess you could say I fought for mine."

"Can't say how I got mine," he reflects. "Sure as hell didn't go quietly, but I wouldn't say I was fighting for a second chance." He would've been happy with not dying in the first place, but he'd been fighting to stay quiet. To protect Atlantis and Earth. Just doing my job, ma'am.

He can imagine the look on Elizabeth's face.

"I'd say this is a time I don't know."

Kyra walks closer to him, examining the wound and the handprint. "You're not Furyan, are you? No, that doesn't look like the mark of Shirah. Shame. For a moment I thought-- nah, skip it. Do you remember who gave you this mark?"
