Current mood: thoughtful

Ed's currently perched on a barstool, not wanting the comfort of one of the armchairs scattered about the Nexus. For awhile, he's perfectly content to watch people pass by as he mulls over what he wants to ask and how to word it. Eventually, he gives up on trying to word things delicately and decides to go with blunt.

"Okay. Suppose you and a friend had apparently been flirting with each other without even knowing you were doing it until someone else points it out. Possibly embarrassing yes, but not a problem, right? Wrong. Because said friend is already involved with someone else. That someone happening to be an alt." He sighs. "There's also the problem that we're probably better friends than we should be, and I, at least, have been trying to put a little distance back into things. Not terribly much--just enough to try to get things back to the proper levels or something."

Now he rubs at the back of his neck. "It doesn't help that we've already found out relatively soon after we first met that we were interested in each other in the 'more than friends' sense although a certain amount of that could have been brought on by personal stuff we've both been going through at the time that I don't feel like going into. Anyway, she recently realized that she's still interested in me. And before someone suggests the polygamy thing, the alt and I don't like each other and would probably spend entirely too much time sniping at each other or getting into outright fights if we had to live in the same apartment together."

Now he smiles weakly. "I guess my question is: thoughts on this?"

"It sounds like, you've got yourself in bit of a mess." Rik says, smiling slightly. "I take it, she's faithfully committed to the other you?"

Ed nods. "Yeah. She has no plans on bugging out on him anytime soon, if ever. Not that I want her to dump him for me, as much as I may want to throttle the little bastard sometimes."

"Yeah." Ed smiles ruefully. "Seems to come with being an Elric. The being screwed part, I mean. I don't think we usually have weird relationship issues falling out of the sky into our laps..."

"True," Ed agrees. "But assuming that ending up here wasn't the screw-up itself and is just a side-effect, hopefully, it'll be something relatively normal otherwise."

OH MY GOD, IS THAT LANDLORD-EDWARD? OUT IN THE NEXUS? IT IS.

Edward hasn't been out into the public around the sign in years, but lo and behold, he must've started getting cabin fever, now that his 'taking it relatively easy for an Elric' lifestyle is mandated for him. (He's contrary enough for it, certainly.)

Edward gives his alternate a rueful look. "Uh-oh," he says, sitting down on the edge of one of the chairs. "I'm assuming I've got three guesses and the first two don't count for who this is about." Oh boy, the apartments are going to get fun. He shakes his head. "Well, obviously, my family's been able to make polyamory- which is the word you're probably thinking of- work, and I've heard reports from one of our alternates who like to hop worlds that it's not uncommon for Edwards to be inclined towards it, but not all of us probably are, no. But it seems like that might be the only real option for you three short of you and Sarah having to cut off your friendship to avoid the emotional entanglements jeopardizing not only that, but her relationship with our other alternate."

He sits back. "Although, you do realize you don't have to all three live in the same apartment for that sort of arrangement, right?"

Watch this Edward try very hard to not sink into the ground in embarrassment. He hadn't meant to bring this complication to his relationship to his landlord alt's attention. Oops.

"Uh, yeah," Ed agrees. "I'm not sure why my brain picked the one it did." Now he blinks at the other Edward. "...Are you actually saying that it'll be fine if we do this instead of people making up their minds and sticking to one person? And someone already brought up the part where we don't all have to stuff ourselves into the same apartment, yes."

"Not that I think anyone's sanity would survive us all being in one apartment," Ed more or less mutters to himself.

Well, that's all right. This Edward can be a nosy coot anyway, and he's fussy and protective of his tenants. He views them as sort of extended family, and everyone knows how Edward Elrics are about family.

He shrugs. "I'm saying it's certainly not immoral, unless you want to use some religious order's stuffy old definitions of the word, in which case, I think anyone by the name of Edward Elric is in big trouble anyway, so may as well go for broke, right?"

Edward gives his alternate a grin. "But unbelievably enough, yes, it's possible, especially if the two of you can start focusing a bit more on the fact that even if you're not fond of each other, you're both important to Sarah, and Sarah's important to you. Unless I'm completely wrong, you wouldn't stand by and let something happen to that alternate because you know how upset it would make Sarah if he got hurt, so start with that and build off of it. Even if you're never really friends, I think you'll find it can work a bit better than you're giving it credit for. We Edwards are a territorial lot. Just make each other part of the territory attached to Sarah."

Well, at least he's honest about it. "That's my two-cents on it, anyway. My only request is that you guys don't tear up the grounds or buildings if you decide a fight's the best way to go. I can't go out repairing that much without my family fussing at me, so be nice to the property."

A bit acidly. "I've noticed the territorial thing. It's part of why I want to, if not beat him, at least smack him a few times. And no, I have no plans on letting anyone turn him into a shish-kabab, because yeah, I know it'll make Sarah unhappy and I don't want that."

Now he gives Edward a guilty look while rubbing the back of his neck. "Uh, been there, done that, got the frying pans thrown at us?" he jokes lamely.

Edward gives his alternate a tired look, then rolls his eyes skyward. "If it wasn't for the fact that she shares rent with the other alternate, I'd lower her rent as thanks for breaking it up before there was too much damage."

SIGH. You children. "That's what I mean, though. Instead of viewing him as competition for territorial space, just view him as part of the territory to watch out for. He's attached to Sarah, whether you like it or not, and the same goes with you, whether he likes it or not. So if you want to even be able to maintain the friendship without your rivalry hurting Sarah's feelings, you're going to have to stop thinking of each other as competing for the same space. Especially since you both know that aside from yourselves, the other is probably the best for protecting Sarah."

He thinks for a second. "Okay, lemme put this another way. Obviously, part of the issue is moot in this case, but would either of you feel territorially jealous if I chased off a threat to Sarah, or spent time talking to her? I am her friend, and I do protect the residents in my buildings, after all."

Meekly. "At least I fixed what I did?"

Now he shows signs of crankiness. "It would help if he didn't decide to be an asshole about what I am when he found out. That was what really prompted the fight. Him basically poking me with a stick until I flipped."

He shakes his head. "No, you chasing off threats to her or talking to her doesn't bother me."

"Homunculii are different in his world, aren't they?" Edward asks. "Considering what they are in his world, I don't entirely blame him. To be perfectly honest, my first reaction would be to worry if Dante got her hands on you, and if so, how much damage she had a chance to do. That's the part that really can cause problems, and I think even you know that. My older brother being a homunculus doesn't bother me, and neither do you, but ..." He trails off, looking off to the side for a moment, then shrugs. "But Sloth was a problem. Despite who she'd been before Dante messed her up.

"Not that it was fair of our alternate to do that," he says, shaking his head. "But it's not without at least a reason. If he'd just been a general dick for the sake of being a dick, that'd be different. The fact that he kept at it even when he knew better, that's general dickery." He grins, figuring his alternate would appreciate his word choice.

"But anyway, as different as the circumstances are, when it comes to flat-out territory, it's not that different for me to care about Sarah and look out for her than for any of our other alternates to do the same. Now, where it gets different, it's... really not. A relationship is about caring for each other, and taking care of each other and filling in areas of emotional need. Logically, no single person can do all of that for someone- we have family and friends beyond our lovers for a reason. If a single person were all we needed, we'd never have the slightest inclination towards caring for anyone else. You obviously fill in some part of Sarah's emotional needs in a relationship, and he fills in another. You're both taking care of her and she needs you both to do it. So where's the problem on that?"

Envy eyes Edward briefly- this is the Nexus, god knows what sort of world could create another set of genetics like that, but he's not showing any recognition of the other homunculus. "You're a homunculus. You're gonna watch the broad grow old and die. Give up now and stop fucking worrying about it."

Ed twitches and holds back the initial urge to run the fuck away and instead hides the fear behind a mask of anger.

"I know damn well that's going to happen," he growls, with a quick flicker of pain in his eyes. "Unfortunately, emotions don't typically come with some sort of goddamn switch."

Envy looks at Edward with that "you're very very new" sort of look he tends to give any new homunculus that Dante brings home like some sort of alley cat. Not that there've been too many in his life yet. "Consider this your first lesson in Homunculus 101, then, kid. Learn to ignore it."

I knew I probably shouldn't get involved in other people's romantic entanglements. In fact, I firmly told myself it would be a very good display of sense to keep walking on my way to work.

I always strive for good sense. I don't always succeed, however. My feet found themselves turning around against my better judgment and heading back to the sign.

I can help dead people, but playing Dr. Ruth to the living is a bit beyond things I can list on my resume. Still, something about his question, I couldn't really leave well enough alone.

"Well, I can't say I'd ever been in your particular situation," I confessed, shoving my hands in my pockets. "There's only been one girl for me, and she was one of a kind, the sort of girl you don't meet again. But to my way of thinking, it really shouldn't matter. Do what you have to do to deal with it, but life's too short to lose the people you really care about over small things that don't matter after you die."

I knew all too well how that went. "I never intended to lose Stormy either, and she didn't intend to lose me. But as it is, I'm going to be around a lot longer than she was. It doesn't really matter how long you're going to be around, and everything to do with how long they will be, because it'll never be long enough."
