"How did you decide when to leave--well, not your family home, exactly, but a home you've got accustomed to?"

Martha is fiddling with the lid of a to-go drink she has in hand (chocolate, not coffee), and her expression is pensive. "I've just completed medical school and I've got a year to go as a FHO, but I've started to think about living abroad when I'm done with that. You could say that...recent events have given me an interest in experiencing some new things."

The look on her face indicates that she's putting it mildly.

"When I left the home I had become accustomed to..." Mara pauses, and laughs, quietly. "I left to go back to my family home. Responsibilities were the decision-maker."

Martha doesn't think she'll ever move back in with her parents, unless, God forbid, there's some sort of health issue, but she knows there are often extenuating circumstances.

"Did it turn out well?"

"It's where I belong," Mara replies, which if you note what she's saying is not really an answer at all.

Martha not only notes this, she brings it up, because that is just how she rolls - annoyingly directly. "Well, that's not necessarily 'well,' is it?"

"Not necessarily, no." But not direct enough for a straight answer! FOILED AGAIN.

"So it didn't turn out, then?"

"I do well enough." Mara smiles briefly and clasps her hands in front of her.

Martha studies her for a moment, and then smiles, too. "That's all we can ask for, isn't it."

No, it's not.

Mara's expression tightens briefly -- just briefly, before it's hidden under her polite public face. "What we ask for and what we get seem to often differ."

"When I get bored with where I am, I tend to find some place else to live" Or when a lot of people comment on how young he looks for his age, which is a sure sign that he needs to move before people really start noticing that he isn't aging.
