Week six - Friday AM
Characters: Alice Munroe and Jared Bivens.
Location: Siena Suites, Alice and Jared's.
Summary: A wild Jared appears! He uses Early Breakfast! It's not very effective...
Rating: B for burnt eggs that will likely be fed to unsuspecting doggies.
Making breakfast was mostly easy. It's not like you could really get granola or dried fruit wrong. Eggs, on the other hand, well, he'd never made eggs before. After the first try, he decided to read the carton. The second batch was looking somewhat eggy, at least, as he stirred it with a fork.
He hoped he got it right. The whole point of this was to make Alice's day a little easier. And maybe distract her from the fact that his roots were black. Alice came out looking a lot less put-together than he was used to seeing her when she came to wake him in the morning. She was wearing a nightgown, her hair down from the normal plate she kept it in and a little disheveled. It was the smell of the eggs that woke her up, even more than the coffee, and she had the decency to blush at the sight of the teenager in the kitchen.
Jared gave her a quick up and down when he looked over, almost on reflex, before focusing on the food again. "Thought I'd give breakfast a try this morning," he said, oh-so-casually.
"Did I oversleep?" she asked groggily, brushing the sleep out of her eyes with her fingertips.
It was Jared's turn to blush; luckily, the eggs didn't comment on it. "I dunno, depends on what time you normally get up. I got up early, though."
"Then I must be dreaming," she replied, sounding a little amused that time. She had half a mind to go back to her room to get her bathrobe, but decided against it. It wasn't as though he didn't parade around in his boxers most mornings. "I wonder when John Krasinski will show up and offer to give me a foot massage."
Jared snorted, finally looking over at her. "Your fantasy foot massage is from John Krasinski? Way to set your expectations low."
"I think he's gorgeous, shut up," Alice retorted, moving to sit down at their little table. She fidgeted slightly, not wanting to crowd him in an effort to get her coffee.
That brought an all-out laugh. "Shit. I didn't think you were the type to go for Robert Pattinson or something, but c'mon, at least Johnny Depp. They're all dead anyway, might as well fantasize big," he teased, poking the eggs around some more. They were starting to stick to the pan.
The statement about them being all dead was a little bit of a buzzkill, and Alice found herself frowning a little bit in sadness, the quickness of her quip destroyed. "Yeah well, Johnny Depp played the same role in every movie he was ever in. Nevermind that I'm sure he's busy being the star character in every other woman's fantasy foot massage. I like John Krasinski. Don't hate."
Some of the eggs were brown, so they were probably done. "'Cause Krasinski didn't play the same role in everything he was in. But whatever, have your dorky fantasy foot massage." Scraping, Jared dished the eggs out onto two plates.
Alice looked at the plate of eggs warily as he brought them over. From the look of it, he'd burned them. Despite that she forced a smile, finally giving into temptation to get up and get herself her coffee. Part of her wasn't completely sure why they were having this very weird early morning conversation and blamed it on her grogginess; coffee was the cure.
"Hey, yeah, you wanna grab me a cup while you're there?" Jared said, going back to grab the bowls of granola.
"Uh, sure," Alice replied, filling two mugs. Not knowing his preference she creamed and sugared his like she did her own, bringing both mugs down before settling in her chair. The whole thing was slightly surreal, and anxiously she picked up the fork to carefully taste the eggs.
Lifting his mug for a drink, Jared stopped, scowling. "It's not like I poisoned them. I'll eat first if you're so worried."
"It's not that," Alice replied, putting the fork past her lips. Her nose wrinkled a little, but she gave him a smile. "They're good. Thank you."
He didn't exactly believe her, but it wasn't worth arguing over. "Sure, no problem," he said, sipping at the hot coffee.
Alice put the fork down and took up the coffee once she'd swallowed, partly to wash the taste out of her mouth. Her expression relaxed immediately. I'll have to go and see if there's any vanilla extract in the inventory room, she thought absently, grabbing her spoon for the granola.
Taking a deeper drink, Jared picked up his fork and took in a sizable mouthful of egg. He nearly choked. Hell, he would have spit it out if Alice wasn't there. Instead, he swallowed it all in one go. "Jesus fucking Christ. Needs salt."
Alice immediately broke into a fit of giggles, snorting briefly into her coffee. "You had the heat up too high," she said once she caught her breath. "And probably didn't add enough water. But it's the thought that counts?"
He felt his face growing red as he poked the eggs around his plate. "Yeah, or something," he said, glancing at her. "Kinda surprised you're not pissed that I wasted food."
Alice gave a little shrug, focusing on her granola. "I would've liked if you hadn't, but I'm not going to break your legs if you make a mistake. This stuff takes some finesse." She chewed and swallowed her mouthful before taking a sip of coffee. "If you like, I can show you."
It was a good offer. He mulled it over, considering what she'd want him to say. Alice wouldn't offer if she didn't mean it, and she seemed the type who would love to be all mentor/teacher. Hell, he wouldn't be here if she wasn't. "Alright. All I really know is how to work a microwave, so you got your work cut out for you," he said with a smile.
"We'll work something out," she said with a slight smile. "I'll save these and give them to Rocky and Bosie; I'm sure they'll eat them."
"At least the dogs'll be happy, I guess," he said, grabbing his granola. "Y'know, this is why I sleep in. Skip breakfast. All morning food sucks."
"Whatever, I guess I'll stop making you breakfast then," Alice countered, arching her brows at him and smirking.
"Only if you let me sleep in until noon."
"You got jokes! Funny!" she replied, smiling wryly again. "When you're off probation you can sleep however late you want, but until then, you know the drill." The granola didn't take long to finish, leaving her with just her coffee and the sad excuse for eggs. She almost felt bad that they turned out badly; she really liked eggs.
He rolled his eyes but just kept eating. "So, this isn't all we can have for breakfast, right?" he asked.
"I'll make some waffles after I get dressed and shower," she said, finishing her coffee and bringing the empty bowl to the dish washer. "Remember it's your turn to put the dishes away after I run this load."
"Got it, ma'am," he said, giving a mock salute. "Where should I put the eggs?"
"Pile 'em in a bowl and leave 'em in the fridge. I'll go knocking on the doctor and Jed's doors later."
Jared nodded as he finished his granola, using the empty bowl for the eggs. "Those dogs are going to love me. With you teaching me to cook, they're going to eat like kings."
