An Evening At The DeMilles-Marsden Apartment
Jay let himself into his and Davina's apartment ready to relax.  Thursdays were especially busy for him; three back-to-back classes in the morning, a three-hour anatomy lab in the afternoon, and then speeding over to SHS to coach a JV Lacrosse game before working out at the gym for a half hour and finally coming home after a quick shower.  All he wanted to do was grab a beer and some food and watch TV on the couch with Davina.

He didn't feel like cooking anything, so unless Davina was inclined to cook, he figured that he'd just grab whatever leftovers were in the refrigerator and go from there.  He never expected Davina to make dinner for him just because she was usually home before him, but he sure appreciated it when she did.  He was mediocre in the kitchen at best, so anyone's cooking was better than his.

He put his keys on a table by the front door and dropped his gym bag beside their sofa as he entered the living room.  Davina was sitting down with a bunch of papers and magazines and Jay grinned as he recognized the "wedding stuff" as he thought of it.  He liked knowing that in just over six months she would be his wife.  "Hey, pretty girl," he greeted her, leaning down to kiss her on the mouth.  "How're you doing?

Davina smiled up at her fiance and stretched up to greet him with a kiss. The best time of the day was always when he was finally home with her. Between her work, his school and coaching and wedding planning, it seemed that, despite living together and being engaged, they didn't get to see each other nearly as much as they both would like.

"I'm good," Davina affirmed, sticking a Post-It note on one of the glossy bridal magazine pages before setting it on the coffee table. "Ready for a break and some time with my favorite boy," she added, standing up and wrapping her arms around Jays neck, kissing him again.

"I made your favorite," she told him, nodding towards the kitchen. Davina didn't feel domestic every evening-- and luckily, Jay didn't expect her to be-- but she knew he liked when she tried, even if she was a far cry from Rachael Ray.

"My favorite?" he grinned down at her, pulling her into a bear hug. "I've got my favorite right here." He squeezed and then released her, but not before he gave her another kiss.

"You're going to spoil me if you keep this up," he teased. Jay was excited to attack the meal waiting for him, but he wanted her to know how much he appreciated her cooking for him--so that maybe she'd keep it up if she wanted. And, he reflected, because she deserves the thanks.

"You going to come eat with me?" Sometimes she ate her dinner before him because she got home so much earlier, but other times she'd wait on purpose or get distracted with the "wedding stuff" and then they'd eat together.

Davina nodded as she walked over to the oven, checking on the dinner. "Yeah, I ended up staying late at work. I've only been home a bit over an hour." She wiped her hands on a dishtowel before pulling some plates from the cupboard and handing them to Jay. She still found it hard to believe sometimes that she was so domestic -- she was certain no one from her graduating class ever would have believed that Davina DeMilles would not only end up engaged -- sans pregnancy -- but would also cook dinner and enjoy it. Most of the time.

"So, how was your day?" Davina asked, always genuinely interested in Jay's days. His school sounded way more interesting than her evening classes with four other women -- all over fifty -- were.

“Oh, you know,” he shrugged, setting the plates on the kitchen table. “Crazy as usual. The guys won the JV game today against Fairfield High—absolutely creamed them, so now the Varsity lacrosse team thinks that they have it in the bag for their game against Fairfield tomorrow. They might be right, but I bet that it could wind up being a close call if they start slacking off. And you don’t want that this early in the season.”

He moved to the refrigerator, opening it up and staring inside. “What do you want to drink, babe?” he asked, pulling out a Bud Light for himself. His dad ragged on him for drinking light beer, but Jay didn’t really care. He didn’t worry about calories himself, but he learned that it was usually better to have the “light” version of things around for women. If there wasn’t light beer in the fridge, he could bet on Madeline Carver complaining about how he sucked at life when she came to visit Davina. Sometimes he thought that she complained just to get him to go into another room so he wouldn’t have to listen to her—though he mostly enjoyed having her around. He was even used to her enough not to mind when she lied to him about random crap.

“And classes were fine. I got out of my second one a little bit early and it was really nice to have that little break. And that bitchy girl in my third class? The one I told you about how she always tries to show up the professor and act smarter than everyone? She finally gave an incorrect answer—but making it sound like she was bored because the answer was so obvious—and Dr. Harding just nailed her. He’s usually pretty tactful if one of us gets something wrong, but this time he just was so sarcastic and suggesting that she should think about interning under Jack Kevorkian because she clearly wanted to see her patients die. She looked like she might cry—I kinda wish that she had,” he admitted half-ashamedly.

He decided not to bring up his anatomy lab because talking about cadavers would probably make them both lose their appetites. “How about you? How was your day? Why’d you have to stay late?” He put their drinks on the table and then got silverware out of a drawer and put the pieces by their plates.
