Sam paused for a few seconds, contemplating what to do. He could sit here like an idiot and watch her walk away, or he could get off his butt and try to stop her. Suddenly, what he needed to do seemed crystal clear.
"Stacey?" Sam said hesitantly, poking his head around the doorframe. "Please don't leave," he said quietly, looking down at the floor. He rubbed his forehead as though he had a headache, and looked up at her. "We need to talk. Maybe not right now, just .. please don't leave me."
He'd really meant to say 'please don't leave' but his fears had tumbled out. He was afraid that if she left now, they'd never fix whatever cracks had formed in the rock of their relationship.
