It had been just another day. Walking the mountain, helping out where she could once given her guns back by her ridiculous husband. There was an entire wardrobe full of stupid hats in the TARDIS and she seemed to delight in hiding them every time River went looking. It was typical. And annoying.
River had checked the time, realising she probably should get back to the Doctor when she heard it. A bang on the door. Hand went to gun automatically but she didn't react just yet.
Second bang. Another. Another. She listened for a moment, utterly focused, and soon realised it wasn't enough to be an attack.
It wasn't an attack, she thought, stepping near the blast doors.
It was a plea for help. Some of the bangs at the door were hard, desperate, others weak, others barely there at all. And River went into action, surrvailance called to confirm what she believed was right. Medical called when she thought about what they might be facing.
And backup. Not to fight, but to help. More guards, more people to do what medical might need done.
It didn't take long for the doors to open. For River to know she had been right. And even she, even River Song who had seen and done so much in her unnaturally long life, was heartbroken for those she saw.
"You're safe now." she said quickly, running to the side of one of the injured. "We'll help."
