Matt sighed, sinking down onto his bed, and ran his fingertips over the face of his watch. He should have known better than to get involved with Felicia. He really should have known, considering her long-term affair with Spider-Man. She ought to have been off-limits, ought to have been crossed off of Matt's list of options, simply because there was some sort of code about not sleeping with a friend's ex.
Really, he was going to Hell for that.
But Felicia was her own person and could make her own choices, and she and Matt had been friends -- or at least friendly with each other -- for years now. He genuinely liked her, in that way he knew was toxic, the kind of way that crept up on him and settled in his heart and wouldn't go away.
He wasn't going to say he was in love with her, but he also knew he didn't let go of women that he was with. He never fell out of love, he never stopped caring about people he let into his life in such an intimate way. He started to feel responsible for them, started to feel protective, started to feel like he couldn't just turn and walk away entirely. Even if they parted ways and didn't speak, he'd still want to know whether she was all right.
When he heard her footsteps, Matt got up off of his bed and headed to the main door of his quarters, opening it up. "Felicia," he said, smiling faintly. He didn't need to ask. He knew her by her footsteps, her heartbeat, the scent of her hair. "Thanks for coming by; I hate the texting generation."
