Who: Sirius and Gwen
What: DATE TIMES~
When: Evening
Where: Starting out in the cafeteria
Warnings: Probably low
It felt a little silly to be dating here. If that was what this whole mess could even be called. It felt even stranger because, of course, back at home, he was in prison. And before that had been the war. And everything had just been kind of a mess. It had been weird to start flirting with Gwen and realize just how long it had been since he'd talked to someone with any sort of interest about what they could be in the future -- and not worry instead about whether or not Lily and James were safe, and where was Remus, and was the person he was talking to a spy? A Death Eater? And how the hell was he supposed to trust anybody when the whole world was a mess, and especially when everyone was suspicious of him being a spy. (That too had made dating difficult near the end. Because everyone had been watching him so closely, and all he could worry about was if someone was trying to get close to him to figure out if he was a traitor or not. Trusting had not been easy.)
But this really wasn't about trust. Or, at the very least, he knew the sort of basic trust was already there: the sort that just meant being around another person wasn't incredibly dangerous. Gwen wouldn't try to kill him. (Well, probably at least.)
And, also, he knew this was it. Whatever life he had here was really the life he had left. (Which wasn't to say he didn't have some time at home. A long stretch of prison time, of mulling over those painful moments in the Potters' house, of knowing he failed Harry, of knowing he had betrayed Remus. Of knowing the entire wizarding world thought he was capable of murder on a grand scale and of betraying the person he had loved above everybody else.)
So, yes, maybe he needed something like this. Something simple. Dinner with the kind of conversation that didn't matter, the sort of jokes that were easy to laugh at, and then whatever followed. (And besides, if Remus Lupin was having one-night stands, it seemed perfectly okay for Sirius Black to being have them too.)
He leaned in against Gwen's door and rapped a playful beat out with his knuckles.
