Two worlds away it seemed a memory of a memory; an indistinct impression flipped upon the back of an untrustworthy retina. But the newly fallen, gentle snow coating the land beyond the door seemed more akin to the Lantern Waste than the far reaches of this realm. It was a welcome sight to Susan. Walking outside, she pressed her palm gently against it and extended her grasp to bring up a handful. Like the snowflakes of Narnia - like the snow that would sometimes gather in brown mounds off Finchley Road in London - the pique of frost bit into her warm flesh. And half wondering if this land were truly within the wardrobe as well (as if she, indeed, hadn't ever left England, left the War, left her parents and her friends), her cheeks coloured to see neither a white hart nor a faun with an umbrella. It was true that Lucy - faithful, valiant Lucy - had all the luck. It was true that Lucy had all the vision that Susan, whose nature strove for harmony, lacked. But here, she supposed, she wished a little had managed to rub off on her. Here, she wished for the far off roar of lions. But, instead, all she found was more snow. Let that be enough. |
