Neville didn't have a ring. He hadn't been able to find one, and making one had been harder than he thought it would be. And trading someone for one didn't seem right, not when jewelry like rings were so rare and meant so much to the people wearing them. But he'd put it off long enough, trying to figure out how to give Hannah something to show that she had (hopefully) accepted his proposal. He'd given her jewelry over the years: bracelets and necklaces, and a silly plastic ring that he'd won at a Muggle festival they'd attended once. Right now he'd accept even that ring, but unless Hannah had been wearing it when she was dropped into her pod and left here, that wasn't even available. Neville remembered seeing an episode of a Muggle television show once, a cartoon that featured the man proposing to his girlfriend with a fresh-from-the-fryer onion ring, and as mad as that idea sounded, he did consider stopping in the kitchens to get a circle of raw onion. Better sense prevailed, though, and Neville knocked on the door to Hannah's apartment and was let in. After a minute of greeting everyone and a bit of small talk, he slipped into Hannah's room and closed the door. He leaned down to kiss her with a softly uttered, "Hi." She was beautiful, his Hannah, and he smiled. "Don't tell me I'm not an idiot now, because you'll want to after I ask my question," he started before she could do much more than smile a greeting to him. Neville leaned down and took one of her hands in his, squeezed it, and then remembered the bit about having to kneel. So he knelt. "Hannah, I love you." |
