"Yeah, I'll bet." Sam hadn't really noticed any changes in town, but that was what happened when changes happened slowly before your eyes. It had to be more obvious to Maggie, who'd spent time away. Just like it was easier for him to notice things that had changed about her, or anyone else who left and came back.
Sam shrugged, "oh, I don't know." His life was relatively calm these days. Some people might have thought it was boring, but Sam didn't. After years of struggling to survive, to find himself, to find a place to call home, Sam was grateful for a life that was steady. There were no surprises, for the most part. Other people's lives were dramatic, full of scandal and affairs and divorce, and while Sam sometimes wished he had someone to share his life with, he'd rather be on his own than be stuck in the middle of something neither of them really wanted. So he was content to bide his time.
"The bar's going well. Which you know." He'd dated here and there since she'd left. Had a steady girlfriend for a little while, but eventually, it became clear that she was still hung up on an ex. Maggie didn't need to know about that, though. "Guess the most exciting thing was that I'm officially the owner now, not just manager. That was a hell of a change."
