About: | Because learning to write and type in tengwar is such an undertaking unto itself, and i didn't want to fill up the elvin language communities with my unrelated blather regarding writing or typing in Tengwar, i have created this community, for those interested in studying or using the elvish letters. i'm experienced in writing {Sindarin mode} by hand and understand the process of getting the letter you want in english into the Tiw, and also how to make that character via the keyboard. i'll be happy to help and use this community as a place where anyone can learn the elvish letters - for handwriting or typing - and people can get together to talk letters or show off writing. i suppose there isn't a better "standard" set of fonts than Dan Smith's, so when it comes to keyboarding that will be the fonts i can help with. i've uploaded those fonts, Sindarin and Quenya along with their help files to a Yahoo!Group [for the free server space] called Sindarin Tengwar. These fonts will work for both PC's and Mac's. [i'm using a mac.] if you simply wish to learn to write, grab the "Help - How To" file in PDF and the fonts. you may need to install the fonts for it to display correctly. from this file you can learn which english letters, or which phonetic sounds are represented by which Tiw. easy! you can use the Tengwar as a simply substitution code and immediately your writing is something special. to learn to type you will need to memorize [or keep a cheat sheet handy] the location of the Tiw you wish to produce on the keyboard. typing "Ai!" in the elvish font will not display "Ai!" on the screen, and readers will translate your phrase as "Khyth" or something similar. =) for PC users there *is* a trans-literation tool called "Tengwar Scribe" which reportedly does allow you to type in the english letter and receive the appropriate Tiw - i'm not sure if this works, i'm sure this community would value input from anyone who has used the scribe. it is a Dan Smith creation, available on his tengwar site. it's easy to learn the letters for writing, don't be daunted. they're beautiful and can make words special and private even if they're not in the elvish language. i'll try to improve the look of this community as i have the time, for now... cheers! | ||||||||||
