When I first constructed the dice, I had originally planned to hand-make a rollable version of the Norse runes, one aett per eight-side di, but the fimo I was trying to use kept defeating me. Eventually I found pre-made blank dice that were six-sided.
Given that I could not decide to break the aetts, I decided to go a different way. I picked a kanji that represented each rune, reordered the symbols, and etched them on the dice as needed. The weren't beautiful, but were quite functional. In the end, most of the kanji took on meanings to me that felt quite different from the rune they were based on.
In terms of use, I would put them in a bag--or a pocket--think about what I wanted to ask, and then withdraw the four dice one at a time: one to represent the over-riding energy that was affecting the matter, and then one each for past, present, and future. A roll and I had the symbol that stood for each one.
