Here you will find a list of game mechanics. This is more of a FAQ and what is expected for posting list than a rule set. If you have any questions are not answered here, please leave a comment and we'll respond as quickly as we can!
Posting to the various communities:
Your character’s journal is like your own InsaneJournal or blog but without friends filters.
Private Posts:
Private posts are only seen by the character who posts it. Consider it more of a diary or journal entry than anything else. These are useful to show a character’s current state of mind, what they are worrying about, or just mindless ranting (which we all do sometimes). Private posts should be marked as private in the subject line and hidden behind a lj-cut. Please disallow comments as no one, save your character, can see it.
Private posts do not count toward your posting requirement.
Charmed Posts:
Charmed posts are a nifty little addition to the Magical Web consoles. By pushing a button on the console, you can “hide” a post from all others except the person it is meant for. The limit for charmed posts is one per character per week and it does not count toward your posting minimum.
Comments on an uncharmed post cannot be charmed for privacy. Whatever is written on an open post may be seen by all.
Open Posts:
Open posts will be the bulk of this game. These can range from work ranting, relationship problems, family issues or anything your character might have to say. This style of post is basically how you (the player) might use a blog. The Magical Web works like our Muggle internet. There are websites, online shopping delivered via owl, dating sites, you name it.
These posts are open to any other character. Even if your character doesn’t know the poster, your character might want to start up a conversation based on the post or subsequent comments.
Live it up! There is much fun to be had with random conversation! You never know how two characters might connect over the lack of proper dental floss in the magical world!
The tangled_web_rpg community is for owls, Prophet articles, general announcements or anything else you want to bring to the attention to the game at large.
The tangledweb_ooc community is for all out of character discussion, plotting, AFK notices, etc, and it is the ONLY place for OOC comments. Keep in mind that any plot discussed in OOC posts is not considered game canon unless it's played out in the game itself, whether by post, log, private post or owl.
The tangledweb_logs community is used only for posting completed role-play logs. The format for posting these logs is below.
The tangledweb_mods community is friends locked to the players and will be used for announcements, rule changes, and anything else from the game moderators.
The tw_pensieve community is for posting role-play logs that occurred in the past (memories, if you will) before the game opened. For example, Harry Potter going to see his cousin Dudley could be posted here. Also, this community can be used for role-play logs finished too late for the current timeline (for example if a player went out of town but wanted to complete the log anyway).
Your character’s journal is for posting private, charmed, and open posts. This is your character’s personal blog, use it as you would your own.
We require that all characters post a minimum of once a week to keep the game moving. Private posts, charmed posts, and logs do not count towards this minimum. Further, private and charmed posts should not be the bulk of your character’s participation in the game. If you’re having trouble coming up with something to say, ask a mod. Its what we’re here for.
On top of posting, we also ask that you keep track of the game. In other words, read what has gone on before posting so you don’t inadvertently ask Ron to go dancing when he just posted that he’s at St Mungo’s with no bones in his leg.
Maintaining an active presence in a game does not stop with posting. Replying to tags left in your journal and tagging the journals of others is how relationships form and are maintained.
All posts/threads become inactive after three days. After that point, game time has moved on and your characters should as well.
Please keep posts and tags restricted to dialog only. No internet smilies, no *action* descriptors. Use your words and userpics to get your emotions across.
We realise that everyone has lives, and that sometimes Real Life gets in the way of game play. If something happens that will keep you from meeting your minimum requirements, please contact the mods. Characters that go without a post for two weeks (or not keeping up an active presence) will be warned. A month’s inactivity will result in your character’s journal reverting to mod control and your character put up for adoption.
Userpics:
Firstly, your character’s PB (played by) does not need to be approved. We only ask that the actor/model/musician/whatever at least slightly resemble what (if anything) JKR mentioned in the books. Hair colours change over the years as do features of people in general. Its been ten years since the war, things change.
Icons can be basically anything, as your character is using this journal as a communication tool. They can have text, be “moving” or even represent House pride, work pride, favorite bands, whatever. InsaneJournal provides a free account with 100 userpics, use them how you see fit.
Logging:
Role-play logs should be carried out in third person, past tense style. Mainly this is done because it is easy to read and it is the style in which the book series was written. Your log tags to NOT need to meet any length requirement.
Logging can be done in AIM, YM, MSN as long as both players are agreeable and should be spell checked and formatted before posting. If finding time because of work/school schedules or time zone differences is a problem, create a filter in your character’s journal and use a post/tag format to complete the log. (These may even be started well before the post date if you want it completed on time) Simply compile the finished log and post it as you would any “chat” role-play log.
Log tags should be separated by a space, a character (such as: ~**~), and another space.
Log posting should look as follows:
Subject line: Log: Title of Log (something that indicates what happened, or a line of dialog) Who: When: Where: Rating: Warnings:
The log itself should be placed behind a cut tag. This format is to be used for both tangledweb_logs and tw_pensieve.
If a log contains sexual or violent content, please rate it accordingly. No more than one log depicting sexual situations may be posted per week, per couple.
DRAMA is frowned on, severely. If you are having a problem with another player, please contact a mod and we will do what we can to help the situation along. We want the drama in the game, not carried out between players. In other words, if Ron-mun and Harry-mun are angry at each other, Ron and Harry shouldn’t reflect that.
Cliques are further frowned on. You never know where you’ll make friends in game space, and you will hinder your ability to do so if you limit your interaction to only a few characters.
At the moment, character cap is set at four (4) characters per player. Even for the mods. Keep in mind that if you take on a second or third character, the posting rules apply to each character, not each player. You must post and tag as each character would.
You must submit an application for any new character you want to take on as well as a basic plot for that character.
Here is a list of taken PB's. We do not ask to approve your PB so long as the person portraying the character at least vaguely meets the specifics (if any) given in canon and is not currently in use by another player. (Exceptions are the Patil and Weasley Twins)
