It has been eight years since the launch of the Wizard Web, and by now this wonderful device has incorporated itself into our lives as though it has been there from the very beginning.
It all began with a Muggleborn wizard called Warren Stone, an individual who is a household name in the Wizarding World these days.
Having seen the effect that the “internet” had on the Muggle world, Warren set about creating a way for this technology to work in our world.
It was no easy task, and it certainly did not happen overnight, but- just two years after the defeat of You-Know-Who- Warren achieved his aim.
The Wizard Web network expanded fast, with new sites popping up every day as a multitude of witches and wizards clamoured to get involved. The Web is an ideal place to make yourself known, whether you’re advertising your business, giving out important information or asking for help.
By far the most popular part of this ever-growing network is the service known as the Wizard Web Logs- affectionately dubbed WizBlogs by the younger generation. The brains behind this operation have so far kept themselves hidden, nothing is known about them, but the Wizarding world is certainly grateful for their brilliant creation.
For the surprisingly low, one-time fee of seven galleons, you purchase your very own ‘WebName’. Your Web Log is yours to do with what you will, and the search function allows you to find friends- old or new- within a matter of minutes.
You can customize the look of your log to suit your interests, show off your support for your favourite team or express your House Pride. With unbreakable charms that can be put in place to protect your entries from prying eyes on those occasions when you want to be alone with your thoughts, and Web Players to store all your favourite music, it is easy to see why the Web Logs are so popular.
Of course, there are those who worry that the Wizard Web network may rob us of our traditional Wizarding functions. Who will use owls to send messages when they can communicate with a friend at the touch of a button? Who will step into a shop when they can browse and purchase from the comfort of their home?
But, many of us feel that these are minor concerns, and that this merging of Muggle and Magical technologies is a great leap forward. Muggles and wizards share this world, so why shouldn’t we share our ideas?
It was not long ago that You-Know-Who tried to purge us of our Muggleborn kin. Having overcome that narrow-minded hatred together, wouldn’t it be a step backwards to reject this technology simply because it is based on a Muggle idea?
Warren Stone has changed the Wizarding World, and most would agree that he has changed it for the better. We should embrace these changes, we should let them bring us together.
