The DMLE
Department of Magical Law Enforcement
Welcome to Tangled Web’s Department for Magical Law Enforcement breakdown! Here we will discuss the divisions inside the DMLE for player use. This will be useful for choosing which division your character might like to work in within the DMLE.
Lets get started!
Aurors
Aurors are defined by J.K. Rowling as “dark wizard catchers”. For game purposes, we will go a bit more in depth into what an Auror does.
Inside the Auror department are three divisions. Each division has its specialties, though the divisions are consolidated in times of war.
Homicide:
The Homicide Division works with the Hit Wizards on cases where a witch or wizard has been murdered using magic considered “dark”. This would include use of the Killing Curse, or any other Unforgivable. This department concentrates solely on these such cases.
Wards and Enchantments:
This division works with its Hit Wizard counterpart on wards and enchantments on both objects and locations. If a home or object has been enchanted or warded in a way consistent with “dark” magic, the Aurors in this division must break the enchantments/wards and apprehend the witch or wizard responsible.
Vice:
This division works with its Hit Wizard counterpart on cases involving human trafficking (slavery), and consumption and distribution of illegal potions considered “dark”. They may also become involved in cases of child abuse or sexual abuse, but ONLY if Dark Magic is suspected.
Hit Wizards: Magical Law Enforcement Squad
Hit Wizards/Witches are the counterparts to Aurors that deal with any criminal behavior not considered to be truly “dark” magic. These witches and wizards primarily deal with criminals using magic approved by the Ministry of Magic, but in a perverted form.
Any case first goes through the Hit Wizards and if the case is found to be using Dark Magic, it is forwarded post-haste to the Aurors.
Homicide:
This division deals with the untimely death of any witch or wizard so long as Dark Magic was not used in the murder. All deaths are investigated by this division until the case is solved or deemed accidental, suicide or via natural causes.
Vice:
This division deals with illegal distribution or consumption of illegal potions, human trafficking (slavery) and abuse cases. They may also become involved in cases of bribery and theft.
Sex Crimes:
This is a new division, under five years old. This division works solely on cases involving rape and sexual abuse. This division does not yet have an Auror counterpart (The Wizengamot has not yet approved one) and is under heavy criticism by those who feel it is a waste of resources.
Internal Affairs:
The Rat Squad, as not-so-fondly termed by the Aurors and Hit Wizards they must investigate. This division is highly secretive and concentrates completely on ensuring the witches and wizards inside the DMLE are on the “up and up”. Any case involving a suspect’s death or abuse and bribery will be handled by this division.
No this division is not well liked by the others!
Other Departments:
There are, of course, other departments under the “banner” of the DMLE. These include the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts office, Office for the Detection and Confiscation of
Counterfeit Defensive Spells and Protective Objects, and Magical equipment control. More details on these specific departments can be found here -à http://www.hp-lexicon.info/ministry/min
The Wizengamot and Council of Magic:
This works pretty much like most Muggle courtrooms. There are prosecutors to present evidence for the accused and defensive barristers for the opposing counsel. Each case is different and presided over by the court or the head of the DMLE.
I think that’s it! If you have any further questions, please contact a moderator!
