Open Thread!
Who: Andy Kirke and Stephen Cornfoot
When: Sunday, April 11, 1999, just after dinner.
Where: A corridor near the library.
What: A random thread, because who doesn't like random fun? Andy's being attacked by Peeves.
Rating: PG at the moment.
Status: Thread / Incomplete

Andy couldn't believe it. He'd actually run out of ways to entertain himself in the dorm and in the common room. Perhaps it was because the place felt like a funeral today. Certainly, the Quidditch loss to Hufflepuff had done nothing for Andy's mood, either, but he needed to escape from the cloud of gloom. Yes, even if it meant sitting in the library and doing assignments, he would gladly do so.

He was on his way to the library when he felt something cold and hard slap the back of his neck, followed by an oozing sensation. "Bugger!" he called, and he was answered by an all too familiar cackle. Oh, great, Peeves...

"KIRKEY WIRKY IS ALL WET!" the poltergeist yelled gleefully. Andy turned around to see him holding two more balloons, presumably filled with water. Peeves was taking aim again, so Andy took off in a run. He turned a corridor without much care for who he might meet. Andy's main concern was getting away from Peeves. Of course, there was someone in the hall, and before he'd even paid mind to who it was, Andy was flapping his arms wildly and yelling, "Run! Peeves has water balloons!"

Stephen was on his way back from the Owlery, taking his time, and a few 'longcuts' along the way. He wasn't really desperate to get back to the common room since there was a Muggle Studies essay waiting for him.

He'd been meandering along the corrdior, hands in his pockets and wondering if any of the portraits was going to do something interesting when Andy Kirke came around the corner yelling something.

All Stephen took in was 'Peeves' and 'water balloons' but it was enough for him to turn on his heel and immediately take off down the hallway without question. As he reached the corner, he suddenly felt ridiculous and came to a skidding halt, turning to look behind him.

"Uh, I thought there was an unspoken rule about not using Peeves as a prank," he called out to Andy, although he was still ready to run if need be.

Andy finally realized it was a Ravenclaw at which he'd yelled, Stephen Cornfoot. Thankfully, the bloke had the sense to turn around and high-tail it in the direction Andy had been headed. That was, until they turned a corner and Stephen stopped.

Andy didn't plan on stopping, rounding the corner and continuing down it until he realized Stephen had yelled at him. Oh, well... Was Peeves not following him anymore? Andy looked behind him and blinked. Well, that was fortunate. However, he was still sodding wet all down his neck and back.

It took him a moment to register what Stephen had said, and then he rolled his eyes. "Oi, like I'd do this to myself," he said, gesturing toward the wet streak on his shirt. Andy didn't know it, but his skin was also red from where the balloon had burst against his skin. Nonetheless, he was delighted the that poltergeist hadn't followed him. Perhaps he'd found someone else to harass.

It was then that the poltergeist's malevolent giggle filled the corridor. Bugger, he was still close.

Stephen huffed indignantly and readjusted his jacket.

"It's not like I could see that," he said, gesturing to the wet on his shirt. "All I saw was a blur as you came flailing towards me."

Catching his breath, he looked around, wanting to be sure that Peeves wasn't still hanging around with any more water balloons. He was wearing his favourite jacket and he wouldn't be pleased if it was bombed.

Unfortunately, he heard the sniggering sounds at the same time as Andy.

"Oh bollocks," he muttered under his breath, glanced around and saw one of the secret passageways around the corner. He assumed Peeves knew all the secrets of Hogwarts but hopefully he'd be distracted by someone else rather than follow them.

Pulling back the tapestry, he gestured to Andy to go in first.

Andy huffed. "Well, it's not like I'm known for being a liar," he pointed out. A jokester, perhaps, but if he were going to be pulling someone's leg, it would probably not involve him running down a hall, looking like a complete fool.

Having been glad for the break so that he could return his breathing to normal, Andy's back shot up straight when the poltergeist laughed. Ugh, he didn't fancy the idea of getting smacked in the back of the neck again!

When Stephen pulled back the tapestry, Andy needed no encouragement to go inside. He wasn't exactly sure where this one went, so he waited for Stephen to enter the passageway and take the lead so that he could follow. He wanted to ask where the passage led, but it was best to wait until they were out of Peeves's earshot before asking questions.

"Well, you can never tell in this place," he said weakly, still fidgeting. He wasn't a fan of running at the best of times, and especially not when he wasn't expecting it. It really did cause all your clothes to move around awkwardly and he was just grateful he didn't have his school bag with him.

With a shrug, he ducked into the passageway and felt his way along. As far as he could remember, it came out somewhere near the Charms classroom but that would really take him away from where he wanted to be, he lingered there, waiting for Peeves to disappear so he could continue on. Why should his vague wandering plans be upset by a poltergeist?

Leaning against the wall, he waited in silence for a sign that Peeves was gone. He resisted the urge to cough and finally mouthed a half hearted 'Sorry' to Andy, pointing to his shirt.

On the other hand, giant Andy didn't so much mind the running because his steps were already longer than most, so he figured it was probably less effort for him to go the same distance than it would be for someone short. He wasn't completely sold on that theory, but it at least seemed feasible. "True," he agreed, following Stephen.

As Andy had no idea where the passage went, he could only assume it would take him away from the library. He realised he wasn't that upset by it, but then he'd only been headed there to get out of the common room. When Stephen stopped walking, Andy did, too.

It seemed a little silly, the two of them standing around in the dark in silence. However, it was keeping them dry and out of Peeves's way. Andy's eyes were growing accustomed to the dark, so it was a little easier to see. When Stephen mouthed the sorry to Andy, he smiled and shook his head. 'It's fine,' he mouthed back.

Stephen silently tapped his fingers against his leg as he waited, listening carefully. No rhymes, no songs, no sounds of things breaking. It sounded hopeful. Just to be on the safe side, he decided to give it another minute.

He was about to suggest a silent thumb war game when he heard a scream from what sounded like the floor below. Always a good sign that Peeves had moved on.

Poking his head out carefully, he grinned and said "All clear!"

The words had barely left his lips when the last of the water balloons smashed directly onto his head, drenching his entire head. Thankfully the rest of him was still behind the tapestry.

Once he recovered and pushed his wet hair out of his eyes, he saw the poltergeist disappearing down the hallway.

"Oh, that's really unfair," he said, mainly to himself as he stepped out into the hallway and shook his head like a dog, sending water droplets everywhere.

It was quiet. Way too quiet for Andy's liking... However, like Stephen, Andy assumed that the far away scream indicated that Peeves had moved on to a new location.

Andy considered sinking to the floor as they waited. He didn't particularly want to sit, but he didn't want to keep standing, either. Before he could, though, Stephen got a sudden wind of bravery and stuck his head out of the tapestry to see if the hallway was clear.

Just as Stephen announced the all clear, Andy heard the tell-tale smash and splash of a water balloon hitting Stephen's head. He had to bite his lip to keep himself from laughing aloud.

It took a moment to control his giggles, but finally, they subsided. Now that they were both wet, and Peeves had quite loudly wandered away, Andy followed Stephen into the hall right as Stephen shook his head to loose some of the water, which hit Andy in uneven bursts, depending on which way Stephen's head turned. Since he was already wet, Andy didn't mind.

"Well, then, I'll bet that's the last time you ever doubt me about Peeves," Andy said, starting to laugh again. It was a little funny...

"Yeah, it's hilarious!"

Stephen ruffled up his hair, frowning as he tried to get as much of the water out as possible. He felt a drop run down his nose and wiped it off with his sleeve.

"Alright, I apologise about the doubting," he said, sighing as he pulled out his wand and used it like a hairdryer to dry off the rest of him. He was sure his hair would be fluffy now but rather that than walk around dripping.

Patting his hair down, he looked up at Andy.

"So, were you going somewhere when you were attacked?"

Andy waved his hand dismissively. "You know it is. Or it will be in half an hour or so," he pointed out. At least, that's how Andy would view it, but he enjoyed retelling Peeves encounter stories, even when he was the butt of them. People found them funny, and what was wrong with laughing at himself a bit?

Like Stephen, this was Andy's first opportunity to dry himself off, which he did quickly, not too concerned about the way his newly-dried hair fell. Andy was a total bloke in that area, and it was obvious in the way he dressed. He looked neat enough, yet thrown together haphazardly, as if it had only taken the minimal amount of time to get ready, which was indeed the case. Fluffy hair was not a concern of his.

"Thank you," he said sincerely. With a slight pause, he continued, "The library, actually. I needed to get out of my common room. Everyone is so sour today."

Stephen made a sceptical noise. He wasn't a fan of the poltergeist at the best of times, especially not when he was on the receiving end. "We'll see. I swear, Peeves needs a bell on him."

"It must be bad. I didn't think the library was a very Gryffindor place. So, what's wrong with them?" he asked, pulling off his jacket to look at it properly. The water was gone and it may not have looked all that different but he knew it was anyway!

"I'm not sure the bell would help all that much," Andy admitted thoughtfully. After all, Peeves made a lot of noise anyway, and he was still a terror. It wasn't as if when he appeared anything good was going to come of it. Well, except for a story for later. However, it was going to be a humiliating experience at the time it occurred.

"Well, we're not all dumb," Andy said quickly, with a hint of offence in his voice. Andy was plenty bright, though not a Ravenclaw. He didn't like it when Ravenclaws made the assumption that Gryffindors couldn't be found in the library. What about Hermione Granger? Victoria Frobisher? And all he needed to say was the name Michael Corner to point out not all Ravenclaws were the brightest bulbs.

However, there was no point in letting it get to him. He pursed his lips. "Everyone's still smarting over the loss to Hufflepuff," he answered. It shouldn't have happened, of course, but the Gryffindors had played poorly. There was no excuse, really, and it was being felt throughout the entire house.

Stephen thought about this for a moment then shrugged.

"No, perhaps not. We really need some kind of warning though."

"I didn't mean you were dumb," Stephen said defensively. "I mean, come on, Granger. I just meant I thought you guys would rather do anything than sit and study quietly on a weekend."

Stephen tried not to smile, he really did, but he'd been cheering for the badgers at that game. About time someone other than Slytherin and Gryffindor won. "Yeah, that must suck," was his insightful comment.

Oh, Andy would get the poltergeist back. It was in his very nature. It would be even sweeter if he could enlist Ginny's help, of course, because the two of them were absolute terrors together. "Hm, yeah," Andy said thoughtfully, already beginning to consider ideas for revenge.

As fair as the comment about the library, Andy supposed Stephen had a point. Well, there were notable exceptions, like Hermione and Victoria. "It's true. Libraries are stifling," he admitted. That was an understatement, really.

Andy didn't notice Stephen's smile because he was looking after the poltergeist. If only he could figure out what it was that would irk Peeves, then he'd known the most proper way to go about it...

He grinned at Andy's comment. "I prefer cozy. It could do with some squishy chairs though."

Stephen was slightly concerned when Andy went silent. "Is that a plotting look on your face? Should I'd be concerned?"

Andy would prefer squishy chairs, too, but today called for desperate measures, like going to the library. "Trust me, mate, I'd prefer comfort myself. But when it comes with a side of depression, I'd rather not," he explained.

Was he that easy to read, Andy wondered? Probably. His reputation preceded him - always. "Maybe," he said with a sly smile and a wiggle of his eyebrows. "I can't let Peeves get away with that kind of thing, can I?" he asked, as if it were a natural question. Never mind that the poltergeist terrorized plenty of students daily with almost no retribution, except the occasional rebuke from the staff.

Stephen shrugged. "Well, if you feel that way about it..."

He laughed at Andy's grin and eyebrow wiggle. "Ah, proposing war with Peeves. This sounds like it'll end well. I'm guessing I should map out all the secret passageways of the castle in that case. Quick getaways are always good."

"If you're willing," Andy agreed with a grin. Well, then, there was an upside for everything, even an encounter with Peeves that left him sopping wet! "I'm sure I can put that to good use."

Actually, how did Stephen know all these passageways? "So, er, how did you come across them all?" he asked, assuming that there was more than one. Stephen had indicated that with the way he phrased his question, hadn't he?

"I may need it if it gets bad enough," Stephen said, perfectly serious although it was ruined by his grin.

"Word of mouth mostly," he said, trying to remember where they were. It was much easier to remember they were there as he passed them, much like the trick stairs. "I'm sure there's others I don't know about. I heard there are heaps that actually go out of the castle too. They're very handy when you're running late for a class."

Andy's mouth opened, and then he shut it, clearly amazed by the fact that Stephen could hear about secret passageways by word of mouth when he, Andy Kirke, Social Butterfly, had not.

"I can imagine they are," Andy answered, still quite envious. Well, he was going to get a map, so there was no need to get so worked up about it. But still. Someone who was constantly up to no good should have come across these things years ago!

Stephen fidgeted nervously. It wasn't as if the passageways had been a Ravenclaw secret or anything, and he was sure most of the other houses knew them too, but he felt bad passing on the knowledge that the prefects and older students had made such a big deal of. Admittedly, their interest was purely fascination with the mechanics of the castle and how such passageways worked, not to mention the shortcuts to the library and their classes, but it was fun to find out about them all the same.

"I would have thought you Gryffindors would have them all memorised by now," he said with a shrug. "Handy for getting out of trouble I'd imagine. It's interesting though."
