Justin frowned slightly as he leaned over the table that was covered in many layers of newspaper and peered into the small cups. It looked as if the small tablets were dissolving properly, but he was still wary about the whole matter. He had followed the directions on the box, but he wasn't sure if it was how his mother had done it or not. It was just something he had never paid attention to before. The dye just would appear and they'd colour the eggs. Giving the yellow a stir with a spoon, he wrinkled his nose before he glanced up at Zach.
"I think it should be ready soon... Hopefully it'll work properly," he said, although his voice wasn't that confident on the matter. "I suppose if it all gets bollocksed up we can just charm them proper colors..."
Zach chuckled.
"Or I could just charm your hair the colour of Easter eggs," Zach teased as he peered into the cups, trying to speed the process along. He'd tried to help as much as he could, fascinated by the whole thing. Of course, they'd spend the morning grocery shopping which meant he'd been nearly bouncing off the wall, and not because of the large quantity of chocolate they'd bought for the holidays.
"You know, we could always paint them.... "
"But it's not the same," Justin whined like a petulant five year old, his lower lip sticking out. "You have to dye the eggs. You can't just paint them. And then if you want to make dinosaur eggs, you crush some of the hard boiled eggs so there are cracks in the shell and the dye seeps through the colour the inside of the eggs in the lines of the cracks..." He shoot playful scowl at Zach. "And don't you dare charm my hair. I'll have no luck at all with Maisie if she is laughing the entire night because my hair is pastel pink." He narrowed his eyes teasingly. "Or is that part of your nefarious plan to ensure that I don't besmirch this Holy holiday by getting any action?"
"I'm sure Maisie would shag you even if your hair were green and your body covered in purple polka dots," Zach teased with a smile.
"Is it ready yet, then? How do we know it's ready?"
Justin shifted a bit awkwardly as he chuckled. "Oh, well... At least she wouldn't see the polka dots..." he mumbled uncomfortably, his cheeks flushing a little bit as he peered into each of the cups. "I think they're ready... They all look like the tablets dissolved properly." Pulling the bowl of hard boiled eggs closer to them, he scooped one out of the bowl and bit the side of his lip as he tried to figure out what color he wanted to do as he carefully balanced the egg on the wire hoop. "Well, first you pick a color and then..." Picking the vibrant yellow, he dipped the egg in, making sure it was fully submerged before pulling the loop back out. "You put it into the color and you wait. Oh, bloody hell, I should have picked a darker color to demonstrate. The longer you leave it in the darker the egg gets." Trying to put the loop back under the egg, he pulled it out of the water and frowned as he inspected the egg intently. "See? It's a bit more... yellowy..."
"She'd see them if they were on your face," Zach countered, sticking his tongue out at Justin.
"You trying to make a badger egg there?" he asked as he took an egg and put it in the blue dye with his fingers, not bothering to use the wire hoop.
Justin shook his head in amusement as he put the egg back into the yellow. "No way to get black dye on it. Dying eggs black isn't very Eastery. I could color it a bit with a black crayon though..." Watching Zach, he raised an eyebrow. "And what are you making? A Ravenclaw egg? You wound me and your house."
"I just want to see how blue I can make it.. Because eggs aren't blue, or purple," Zach said putting another egg in the purple one. "Maybe I'm just trying to steal all the good colours. Fast reflexes and all."
"There are blue eggs. Not that sort of blue though I have to admit. Robin eggs are a paler blue, like the sky." Shaking his head, Justin grabbed an egg and put it into the green in order to claim it. "Yellow is a perfectly acceptable colour. How do you know I'm not stealing all the good colors and leaving you with the boring ones?"
"Because you love me too much to do something like that," Zach teased, flicking some purple dye off his fingers at Justin. "Are you trying to make a Slytherin egg too?"
Justin started a bit at the dye flicks before he wrinkled his nose and dipped his fingers in the green dye so he could flick the color at Zach. "Oi. Don't besmirch the good name of green by associating it with that house. The poor egg is going to crack itself to pieces that you would insult it such," he joked back before grabbing an egg and putting it in the lighter blue dye. "Oh? So I would never do something like that, but you would do that to me?" He raised an eyebrow as he smirked and flicked light blue dye at Zach. "You horrid dye stealer. Liking the pretty colours over our dear, dear friendship."
"Well, I am a ruthless former quiddy captain," Zach teased, "but I let you have the yellow, which is obviously the best colour in the bunch."
He scrunched his face up as he dipped his fingers in the orange and flicked it at Justin. "I don't think I like anything better than our friendship."
"But as one of the current chasers slash beaters, you shouldn't be ruthless to me," Justin whined playfully before nodding. "Alright, alright. I suppose I can let you have your colors since you were kind enough to let me have yellow."
Blushing slightly, he wiped the drops of orange dye of his cheek, smearing the colour before he dipped his fingers in the blue again and flicked it at Zach. "Poof," he said teasingly and a bit tenderly.
Zacharias chuckled.
"I think I need to borrow ZJ's fairy wings or knickers before I earn that title," he teased, getting out of the chair and dipping his hand in the purple dye. "Hush or I'll dye your hair purple.." he teased.
Justin shook his head. "You keep talking like that and you won't need the wings or knickers," he teased back, warily watching Zach's hand as his own hand start to inch towards one of the bowls. "You wouldn't dare..."
Zach grinned.
"Oh wouldn't I? I didn't know there were rules for your kitchen," Zach teased.
"Well, it isn't really something you think about, now is it?" Justin said with a laugh. "Usually people dye their hair in the bathroom and it isn't something someone else does to you for laughs." Grabbing one of the bowls of dye, he took a few steps back away from the table. "Do I need to start making rules about not dying my hair any sort of color?"
Zach's face flushed with the thought of rules and experimentation in the kitchen.
"Come on, it might be fun," Zach teased as he flicked the dye at Justin.
Jumping back slightly to avoid the dye Zach flicked, Justin swore as the bowl of dye in his hand sloshed with the movement, getting splashing on the floor and himself. His own face blushing at the comments, he shook his head slightly as he dipped his fingers in the bowl and flicked the dye at Zach. "You're horrible. What sort of fun rules would you come up with for my kitchen?"
Zach chuckled as his cheeks flushed.
"I didn't mean.. I meant dying your hair could be fun," Zach teased before stopping where he was. "Although the other thing might be fun too. "
Justin rolled his eyes. "It wouldn't be that much fun. It's a bit too dark to do it the proper Muggle way without having to bleach it first..." he said, musing about the matter as he ran a hand through his curls. "But it will be a right hassle. Your hair however would be far too easy to dye and much more manageable. Maybe a nice teal color?"
"Teal's too close to green, wouldn't want people to think I'd become a Slytherin or something. Maybe a nice jet black or bright blue or something," Zach teased. "I could probably dye your skin purple though!"
"People will think you're trying to be Harry or Snape or something if you dye your hair jet black," Justin joked back as he flicked dye at Zach. "A bright blue might be nice though. You are not dying my skin purple though. I'm not doing that, even if you let me dye your hair."
Zach pouted.
"Aww, why not? I've got this lovely cup of dye just itching to be used on something.... and who said I was going to let you dye my hair anyways?"
"It's a bit harder to dye hair unless it's willing," Justin pointed out before his eyes went up to inspect Zach's hair thoughtfully. "Although, I could likely just pour dye on your head and it would work pretty well... And that dye is for the eggs, you know. You could use it on them."
"After you, good sir," Zach teased. "I'm just waiting to follow your example."
With a smirk, he flicked another handful of dye at Justin.
Justin tried to dodge the dye again, which meant he got more of his own dye on him in the process of avoiding Zach's, before he narrowed his eyes at the other boy. "But I gave proper example. Besides, I need to defend myself." He nodded as if this was very definite fact before he made a move to dart around the table, flinging the full contents of the dye cup in his hand towards Zach head in hopes of drenching the blonde's hair.
Zach made a sound that might have been misunderstood for a squeak if he were a girl, but luckily he wasn't a girl. Now fairly drenched, he threw his cup in Justin's direction before running after Justin.
"Devious little boy!"
Justin yelped as he dodged the cup, swearing when it hit the table and splattered dye all over the place. Grabbing one of the cups still standing with dye, he clapped a hand over the top of it to prevent it from splashing before running away. He skittered a bit when he hit a wet spot on the kitchen floor, but that didn't stop him from laughing in amusement at the situation. "You started it!" he countered back.
"Well, maybe you should set down rules about dye fights," Zacharias teased before sliding on the wet spot and landing on his arse on the kitchen floor.
"I think we're going to need to buy more dye..."
Hearing the thud, Justin looked over his shoulder and stopped when he saw Zach on the floor. Walking back over to the boy, he looked at him worriedly as he crouched down in front of him. "Are you alright?" he asked before chuckling and shaking his head. "We don't need to dye the eggs." Smirking, he dipped his fingers in the dye cup in his hand and put a strip of colour down Zach's nose. "This is rather fun. I think that's all that matters right now."
"Yeah, but you really wanted to dye the eggs," Zach said with a pout, wrinkling up his nose.
"Want you to have a good Easter with all the traditions and stuff. Unless you just want to spend the day painting me with dye.. "
Justin smiled warmly as he put the cup down on the floor. "I'm having a good Easter so far, Zach. Thanks to you." He ducked his head shyly as he looked at the splotches on his hands. "Trying that doesn't sound so bad actually..." he admitted softly as he peeked up at Zach through his curls. He bit his lip a moment before shifting forward onto his knees and leaning closer towards Zach. "Rule one. No writing dirty words in dye," he said softly before lightly brushing his lips against Zach's. He chuckled softly as he shook his head. "I should probably just make that no words at all."
Zacharias was not prepared for the kiss, but it was so brief he wasn't sure if he had imagined it or not.
"Does that mean I get to paint you too or are you doing all the painting?" he asked, suddenly finding his mouth a little dry.
Justin bit his lip again as his brow furrowed in thought. Swallowing hard, he looked at Zach in a tentative and unsure way before he nodded. "We... we can try," he said softly. "You painting me as well that is..." He laughed nervously as he smiled at Zach. "And if it doesn't work we can just go out and get more dye and finish the eggs, right?"
Realizing what he'd just asked, Zach reached up and ran a hand over his face.
"I didn't mean, shite, don't worry about it if it's not alright, Justin. If you want, I can just lie here and you can paint me all day long.."
Justin shook his head as he smiled at Zach, although a little bit of sadness was tinging it now. "I want to try, Zach," he said very quietly. "I... I want..." He paused a long moment to try and collect his thoughts and how to say it properly. "I just want to feel more than I have been..." Making up his mind, he nodded firmly before locking his gaze with Zach's. "Rule two. You can only paint on me where I paint on you. Alright?"
Zacharias nodded as he licked his lips.
"Alright. I think I can manage that."
Puffing out a long breath, Justin nodded again before dipping his fingers in the cup of dye and smearing a line over Zach's cheek. "Just do the movements slowly, alright? Don't startle me."
