Pushing open the door, Hakkai entered the room amidst the sound of coughing. He eyed the bed where Sanzo lay bundled up within a blanket, shivering slightly despite the warmth of the room. Hakkai set the tray that he’d been carrying onto the nightstand before turning to address the monk, who was hidden under the covers except for exposed locks of blonde hair.
“Are you feeling any better, Sanzo?” Hakkai asked as he began to pull down the blanket to get a better look at the monk.
The violet eyes that he’d exposed glared up at him. “Do I look any better?” Sanzo asked irritably.
Hakkai just chuckled, immune as he was to the monk’s ill-tempered nature. “I suppose not. I brought you something to eat,” he said, indicating the bowl of soup on the tray.
Sanzo pushed up off of the bed slightly to eye the soup, then flopped back down onto the mattress. “Not hungry.”
“Now Sanzo, you have to keep your strength up. Just try to have some of it,” Hakkai said with a smile, moving to assist the man in sitting up.
The monk sighed. He knew that he wouldn’t get back to resting until he’d complied with Hakkai’s advice. Sanzo taxed aching muscles to sit up in the bed, Hakkai aiding in propping him up. He arranged the pillows behind Sanzo to make him more comfortable.
Satisfied with the adjustments, Hakkai set the tray onto Sanzo’s lap. He grasped the spoon before the monk could will his sore muscles to do so, guiding the contents toward the monk’s lips.
Sanzo scowled at the gesture. “I can do this myself,” he said, turning his head away before the spoon reached his lips. “I’m not a child.”
That patient smile was back. “Of course not. But there’s nothing wrong with relying on someone at times like this. Isn’t that what friends are for?”
In his annoyance, Sanzo wanted to tell the demon that he had no friends, but the angry words died on his lips as he gazed into emerald eyes. He sighed heavily instead, aware that the two of them would know that such words were a lie at this point. So Sanzo let Hakkai coddle him for the moment, refusing to admit that such treatment was actually soothing in mind and spirit, if not in body. Hakkai’s genuine smile at being allowed to do so told Sanzo that perhaps the demon benefited as well.
