Not Josh, Remember?
Who: Max and Elias
What: Max being a mother hen
When: Tuesday Afternoon
Where: Their home
Warnings: Laskos = Language
Elias knew as soon as he got home that he was going to have to fess up to Max about where he'd gone to. He'd simply said 'I'm going out' when he left and nothing more, but now he was starting to feel a little guilty for it. He didn't like keeping things from his brother, his twin, and this was certainly something far too big to keep it from him any longer than he already had. As he stepped through the door and closed it behind him, hanging his keys on the hook, he took his jacket off with a sigh and tucked it into the closet in the entryway. "Hey, Max?" he called. "You around?"
Max didn’t think anything of Eli going out. It was a good thing. He’d been lounging on the couch watching cable when his brother said he was leaving and had ended up just falling asleep. He startled awake when his twin let himself him, groping for a weapon that wasn’t even there out of sheer habit. Christ, was he ever going to get over that?
“Hey bro,” he greeted, sitting up and stretching. Yawning, he scruffed his hands through his chin length curly hair, just making it more of a mess as he tried to cover the action. “So tell me you snuck over to Calli’s and got some action,” he said as he reached for the beer on the coffee table to wet his dry mouth. Ack, flat.
Shaking his head, Elias plopped down beside his brother on the sofa. "No," he admitted. "I went to meet with a hunter." And there it was, no beating around the bush or bullshit. If he didn't tell him now, he might not have the guts to tell him at all. He waited for the explosion, eyes flicking to his brother. Max's freak outs usually weren't as awful as Ophelia's or Josh's for that matter, but he doubted he'd be happy about the situation either.
Yeah, Max freaked out. Yes, it was stupid for Eli, who was a super, to talk to hunters. Unless they were like Cath. Or you know, them now. But Eli was not stupid, so there had to be more to this. “You what-?” he began than forced himself to stop freaking out a bit. “Are you okay? Who? Why? Did you know he was a hunter? Was he giving you shit? Do you need help with the body?” Yes, only in the Lasko family would a mother hen freakout involve offers of hiding corpses. They were fucked up. No one was surprised.
"She." Eli amended firstly. "Yes I'm okay. A woman named Artemis Boone. She's the daughter of one of the Boone brothers. She's got a problem and I was trying to help her with it. Yes, I knew she was a hunter. No, she wasn't really giving me shit. And no, I don't have a body to be getting rid of," he assured his brother. He sighed and let his head fall back against the cushions of the couch. "She called me earlier and explained her situation and I just reacted with my gut instincts and went to meet her. Publicly. I didn't want to tell you where I was going because I was pretty sure you wouldn't have let me go by myself and I didn't want to bring you with me because I didn't want to freak her out and have her run off," he explained.
The Boone Brothers? Those bastards were worse than the Laskos. Crazy fuckers too. Well, he’d heard one of them had died, but a member of the Boone family just made the alarm bells go off. What if she had found out Eli was a seer and set up a trap? Max needed to breathe. He nodded, knowing if Eli had really thought was a trap, he would have brought Max and Phee along. Publicly was good. Not stalking her brother was good. No body was good. He could calm down any time now. “I could have tailed you and she never would have seen me,” he reminded his brother. “Just sayin’.” It was not the issue here. Whatever ‘her situation’ was was. “What’s her situation?” He was not Josh dammit. He trusted Eli and hoped he trusted Max just as much. So find out what was going on. Then freak out if necessary.
"I didn't want to take the chance," Eli explained with a little sigh as he pushed his hand through his hair. "I didn't want anything to go wrong because it wasn't just me that could have been in the middle of something bad and if I took you, the situation probably would have just gotten worse and she might have gotten spooked or thought I was trying to hurt her," he said. At least he wasn't yelling at him, that was good.
"She was attacked by a cursed were," Elias finally told his brother. "She hasn't had her first full moon yet and she's scared and doesn't know what to do. She wanted me to research and see if there's a way for her to avoid actually becoming a cursed were and I wanted to explain to her that it wasn't likely but that I'd do what I could. She's freaking out and the fact that she's a cursed were doesn't help matters. I didn't want her thinking that I was going to kill her, so going alone was better and more logical than me admitting I was a supernatural and getting my own ass killed."
Taking a breath, he glanced over at Max again and shook his head a little. "I think she might kill herself or have the other Boone Brother kill her if she can't figure out a way to get rid of the curse. She's not like us, she's still a hunter through and through. She's like... warring with herself because of this and the full moon is right around the corner. I'm not sure what she's capable of but I'm sorry I didn't say something before I left, I just didn't want her to think that I was setting a trap for her. She's a were, a cursed one, the littlest things could set her off and it was a public place so I didn't want to risk her shifting and taking out a bunch of innocent people."
A cursed were. Shit. That was every hunter’s worst nightmare. Becoming the monster you hunted. No wonder she was desperate for help she’d even come to other hunters. She’d really gone out on a limb, taking a chance on contacting Elias. “Jesus,” he muttered, scraping his hands through his hair and letting out a long breath. His brain was already moving on to ‘how can we help her without anybody dying’ when Eli started yammering excuses and reasons and really making Max wonder if his brother actually trusted him.
“Eli, shut up,” he said. “Not Josh. You had good reasons. Still not Josh. Tell me next time and we’ll do the plan thing. Okay?”
Breathing a sigh of relief, Elias let his head fall back against the cushions again. Max was right, he wasn't Josh. Josh was the one that reamed first, and didn't ask questions later. "Sorry," he told him. "Guess I'm not used to coming to you first when I do something stupid," he explained. "I think I spent the whole way home trying to put together that speech so I wouldn't get my ass handed to me," he admitted. Which seemed stupid now that he'd gotten it all out. Max wasn't anything like Josh. He was the voice of reason with the Lasko brood and he always had been.
"I'm gonna research for her, but I know there isn't a way to stop the change. She's already a were whether she wants to be one or not," he told him. "The most I can really do is look up the type she was bitten by and see what sort of information about them I can pull. I just don't want this chick killing herself over something as ridiculous as this. That's like me killing myself because of what happened to me. Just worse because at least mine isn't all the time. She's stuck with this shit and she's gonna shift next week whether she likes it or not. And any other time she gets too pissed off and by the looks of this chick, I'd gather she gets pissed off a lot."
“Yeah,” Max muttered. “Still not Josh.” He really needed to step in earlier if Eli was this knee jerk about it. “You weren’t stupid. You were being cautious and it was a reasonable risk. Breathe, bro. Like I said, never be afraid to tell me. I’m your twin, I will always have your back.”
He nodded getting up to get rid of his warm, flat beer for a couple of fresh cold ones. Cracking them open, he offered one to Eli before he sat down again. “Better talk to Cath,” he suggested. “If anybody knows, he probably will. Or knows somebody who does. Or has a book about it. Whatever” Not that he’d ever heard of any cures or the like, but it didn’t hurt to look. And the Irish witch wouldn’t go gunning for this Boone chick either. Always a plus.
Looked like she got pissed off a lot, huh? Well, like he could pass up that opening? “What’s her name?” he asked. “Also, she hot?” Yes, he had a totally awesome girlfriend who he loved like crazy and was getting hot and cold running sex. They were talking about a chick. It was like asking where she was from for guys.
Elias took the beer from his brother and pulled a long sip from it before responding to the questions and comments Max had for him. "Yeah, I definitely should call Cath and see what he thinks," he agreed. The man knew his shit and he was a bit older so that helped too because the more experience with this sort of thing, the better.
"Artemis," he told him. "And she's okay I guess. Not my type." Not that he thought he really had a type considering that Antoinette and Calliope couldn't have been any further on opposite ends of the spectrum. "Sort of rough and tumble, definitely a hunter. Honestly she reminds me of Ophelia because she looks like she could kick some major ass and anyone that reminds me of my sister is definitely not getting a hotness quotient." That was just wrong.
“Yeah,” he agreed, taking another drink of his beer. “Since there’s probably no cure, we gotta figure out how to keep her from killing herself or getting somebody to do it for her. Maybe talking to Dante would help?” He was really the only were the Laskos knew. “Although that means getting Phee involved and you know we’ll catch hell for bringing her to the party late.”
Artemis. Did all hunter families give their kids weird names? Maybe they thought it would make them scarier to the monsters if they had impressive names or something. He wrinkled up his nose as Eli basically said she was a ball busting bitch like their baby sister. “Ew, God no,” he agreed. “Definitely not my type.” Yeah, just completely wrong.
“So speaking of Phee, are we bringing her in on this?” Max was inclined to say no, not because Ophelia wasn’t competant or would freak out and shoot the chick. But if they were both ball busting bitches, they probably wouldn’t get along. “I don’t know if it’s a good idea if she’s like her. The last thing I want to do is constantly break up cat fights between our sister and some were chick.” Best not to push the ‘you won’t like me when I’m angry’ were thing here.
Elias shook his head. "I'll talk to Cath, but I'm leaving Dante and Phee out of this for now," he assured his brother. "I just think that it'd be better if I do what I can to help her than to bring Phee in on it and have World War III because she's pissed about me not telling her or something. You know how Phee is." It wouldn't go well for anyone and they certainly didn't need Artemis and Phee going head to head.
Max nodded. “She needs to talk to another were though,” he said. “Or we need to get her a book or something. Another were she could talk to would be better. So she can see that her life isn’t over or something.” They only knew like one were and they couldn’t ask him because Phee would find out and ream them. Dammit. He took another drink of his beer. “Anything I can do to help?” Eli and Cath could handle the research end, so Max was pretty much useless there. He was also not the planner type. That was way more Eli’s thing too.
"Maybe that would help, but she's still a hunter. I'm not sure if I wanna bring a were into a room with a hunter to try and convince them that they're not a monster," he pointed out. "But maybe Cath knows someone that could help. Someone that can protect themselves or whatever. He's been here longer than us so it can't hurt to ask." As for Max's question and offer of help, he shrugged a little. "I don't even know how I'm gonna help, but I guess if you wanna sit and help me take notes on whatever I can find, that'd be something. Might be a long night."
‘We can help protect somebody if we have to,” he reminded Eli. “I don’t care if she’s a were and a hunter. We’re the fucking Laskos. We can take her.” Eli had a point though and Max nodded. “Can’t hurt to ask.” Really, they didn’t have many other options. As for helping take notes, that worked. “Sure,” he said. “I’ll make us some dinner or we’ll order a pizza or something. I’m not doing anything better tonight. Jayne has a big test tomorrow and is home studying. So I’m all yours.”
Max had a point. "Right then. A little research and then maybe I'll see if I can get a hold of Cath and figure out anything we don't find. And check into that whole were for her to talk to thing. Good idea, by the way. You're starting to turn into me," he teased, grin sliding over his lips. "Pizza I think. Come on, let's get started." Getting up from the sofa, he grabbed his beer and headed for the office. Hopefully they'd have some luck.
