The School The Kelly Academy for the Gifted can best be described as an authoritarian atmosphere, with extremely high standards expected for both academics and mutant training. There is a rigorous mandatory program of physical exercise, though there are different options offered for how one meets this requirement. Tests of powers training are administered twice per week to an exacting standard, and the failure to succeed at these tests is grounds for the withdrawal of special privileges. The Headmaster of the Academy is Sebastian Shaw, who has virtually absolute power over the school and its students. Much of the day-to-day maintenance of the school is done by Dr. Tessa Hartley, the Assistant Headmaster of the school. Students have quickly learned that Dr. Hartley is a lot more sympathetic to their needs than Headmaster Shaw. While some mutants are ‘induced’ to enroll at the school to avoid being sent to the Vault or an ordinary prison, the majority are encouraged to attend through a government program offering aid to parents to send their children to a school where mutants can ‘safely’ learn to use their abilities. The undeniable reputation for academic excellence that has rapidly been established by the school (with a third of the staff having been professors forced to leave universities due to ‘security concerns’) has also played a part in drawing young mutants to the school. Once in the school, however, it is exceedingly difficult to withdraw children, particularly if they have any past incidents on their record. Main Building- The ring-shaped main building contains the offices, infirmary, art department, and most of the classrooms on campus. Each section of the ring has several exits that both aim out toward the rest of the campus, and allow access to the central courtyard. Cafeteria and Student Center- The cafeteria serves a variety of different foods, and on certain days will even customize the menu based on student demand while adhering to nutritional specifications. The building provides more than enough seating to serve the student body and is employed by a small army of "lunch ladies". The cafeteria hours are 6am-8am for breakfast, 11am-12pm for lunch, and 5pm to 8pm for dinner. While lunch is calculated into each student's work schedule and is mandatory, breakfast and dinner are essentially "come if you want, when you want" during their open hours. While the cafeteria no longer serves food in the wee hours of the night, seating is still open for those looking for a late night snack from the many available vending machines, the contents of which include sodas, junk food, sandwiches, coffee, and microwavable goodies. There is also a student-run snack shop open until 10pm which serves coffee, sandwiches, and ice cream. Within the cafeteria is an unofficial "Senior Section" where those in their last year eat and the underclassmen generally avoid out of pure class separation. While the "senior section" isn't any different than the rest of the cafeteria it's regarded as the "cool" area. It's generally considered a big deal for an underclassman to be invited to join the seniors. Underclassmen who aren't invited by attempt to seat themselves in the area are often met with hostility by those around them, usually until they vacate. The student center is open twenty-four hours, and provides a multitude of activities including videogames, a lounge, a small arcade, a few pool and air hockey tables, and more. In the center of the building is a full indoor basketball court to promote physical activity when the athletics department is closed. Access is provided by each student swiping their mutant registration card. Parking: While students are allowed to have vehicles they are not allowed to leave campus without special permission. Vehicles are primarily used by prefects, staff, and students who come and go on long breaks. Prefects- Prefects are seniors who have maintained a high level of standing at the school. They are considered student leaders who supervise those living in the housing buildings. There are two prefects on each floor of the student dorms. Prefects are the only students, aside from those with exemptions based on their abilities, who have their own rooms. Both prefects on each floor have authority over the same group of students and usually work jointly to make sure the rules are followed/deal with concerns. They are also able to conduct floor-specific activities (movie-nights, raffles, etc.) either on their own or with other students on their floor. Prefects still answer to the higher authorities on campus, and while they may have certain special privileges they are not exempt from any of the school rules. Security: The campus security force runs twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The security office can be contacted by dialing #42 from any telephone on campus, including housing and office phones. Abuse of the security phone line will not be tolerated. The security force works with the school's team of prefects to make sure the rules are enforced. At times there will be random security sweeps of bedrooms to make sure that things are up to code/there is no visible contraband/that the student housing area remains a safe place for everyone. Passes and Disciplinary Measures With the sole exception for mandated ‘family leave’ for summer holidays, Christmas or Spring Break- in which the students are released only to their families and no one else, any other opportunities to leave the campus area are under the purview of a pass system, with day passes typically awarded as a privilege to students that perform well in academics or mutant training, or whom have maintained clean records for a certain length of time. Day passes entitle the student to visit locations in the Denver metropolitan area from the hours of 8 am in the morning to 11 pm at night. Violation of this curfew results in academic lockdown, where students are only permitted to leave their rooms to go to class or engage in mutant training. A tiny handful of students have permanent leave passes that allow them to travel to the city at will, these students are usually 18 or above and are prefects responsible for helping to police the student population, as well as to give support as needed. Special passes allowing students to travel further than the Denver metropolitan area are granted only by leave of Sebastian Shaw personally, and are rarely given except for cases of dire need, such as to attend family funerals. Additionally, as well as day passes, there is the opportunity for students to acquire employment passes, allowing them to seek employment, either on campus itself or in the community. Few employers in Denver will accept a student from the Academy, but a few will and these passes are considered a rare and precious privilege. Students who are repeatedly problematic are forced to wear a bracelet which suppresses their powers, considered to be a mark of extreme shame, and those who are viewed as extremely dangerous are liable to be handed over to government authorities for placement in The Vault, where mutants are as often placed for ‘protective custody’ as they are for actual criminal offenses. Once mutants are sent to the Vault, they are not often released. While many of these mutants are simply held indefinitely, others seem to disappear, and there are dark rumors of government projects and experimentation involving mutants. Rules and Regulations School Rules and Regulations: These are abridged, and aren’t presented in the formal language that they would be in the school code. They should be considered to be in addition to the ordinary rules of a prestigious boarding school. 1.) Mutant powers are not to be used outside of mutant powers training or sanctioned events. In practice, the use of mutant powers is not considered a serious offense on school property as long as it is ‘harmless’, but the use of mutant powers off of campus is considered a very serious violation of the rules. 2.) The Academy cannot be left without proper permission by the authorities, with the sole exception of the ‘home leaves’ granted for spring break, winter and summer holidays, in which a student is released to their parents for the duration of the break. In ordinary cases, consistent strong performance in both academic and mutant training classes (B-level in academics, 4.0/5 in mutant training) and no disciplinary incidents entitles a student to one day pass per week, to be used on any day of that week. Prefects may be entitled to earn a permanent pass, and special passes may be granted under extraordinary circumstances. 3.) Students of the Academy who have not obtained at least a score of 4.0 (out of 5.0) in the Intermediate level of their mutant training must wear bracelets that suppress their mutant powers, unless their powers are officially deemed ‘harmless’ by proper authorities. These bracelets are only to be deactivated during training. 4.) Students who are in serious violation of the rules will have all of their pass privileges revoked and be placed on academic lockdown, forbidden to leave their lodgings except to go to class and attend powers training. Repeated serious violation of the regulations may be cause for expulsion from the school and transfer to federal authorities. Mutant Training and the Danger Room Mutant Training at the Kelly Academy for Mutant Education is taken very seriously and high performance in mutant training is a necessity to gain such valued privileges as in-school employment and day passes. There are two main elements to mutant training, general training, which takes the form of various exercises done (typically outdoors) on the school campus and the unique training opportunities allowed by the Danger Room. Mutant Training classes are determined by the level of a mutant's proficiency, as well as their type of power. Mutants who have physical powers or powers based on the manipulation of the self are in one class, energy and matter-manipulation in another class and psionic-based mutants in a third class. These groups are also sorted by proficiency, with mutants placed in Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced classes. While much of the training takes place outside in the campus, on such things as shooting ranges and obstacle courses, many aspects of powers training are simply inappropriate for ordinary environments. It is towards this eye that the Holographic Simulator has been created, capable of making realistic environments out of 'hard light' technology. Dubbed the 'Danger Room', it is rumored to be constructed from a model used by a top-secret government mutant strike team, though the Kelly Academy's model has been designed for greater safety and program customizability. Students are not permitted under any circumstances to access the control terminal, and only a handful of staff are qualified to do so. |
