RP: Rise Up!
Date: 1 October 1997
Characters: Bill Weasley, Alicia Spinnet
Location: Diagon Alley
Status: Private
Summary: The first act of resistance.
Completion: Complete

It wasn't much. But somehow the idea of using a muggle writing instrument was strangely satisfying. Bill wasn't certain why it was magic but it wrote in large bold purple strokes. Plus, it had no magical signature to trace. So he'd ducked into the Leaky Cauldron's loo - well, the men's one - and scrawled in every stall.

Potter is innocent.

And that felt so good that he'd gone into several other establishments with public toilets and did the same thing. He spotted the Aurors on his way out of the last one and he palmed the marker up the sleeve of his robe, nodded at them, and headed back to Gringotts.

Alicia was returning from the vaults. She'd spent most of the day down there and was exhausted, filthy, and had scorch marks on one hand from where a curse had been particularly hard to lift. The owner of the vault had been dead for fifty years and his family was just now wanting to get inside. Apparently he hadn't left a key and apparently the curses had grown pretty strong in that time.

She repaired, hungry and ready to go home, to the small break room that the human staff used. It was mostly empty nowadays, underscoring the changes in the bank. The goblins were having to pick up slack, along with those of them left, and she'd been grateful for the work in a way, because it kept her busy, away from hopefully having to see or deal with Selwyn, although she hadn't heard from him since the night she'd left.

After washing her hands, she reached for the tub of burn paste on a little shelf, irritated to find it empty. Putting off her lunch for now, she wondered back out and over to Bill's office, putting her head in when she saw him at his desk.

"You have any burn paste on you?"

Bill looked up from his desk before reaching down and opening the middlemost drawer. He tossed the burn paste to her, knowing that she'd be able to catch it. She had played Quidditch after all.

"You alright?" he asked, pushing his paperwork aside and sitting back in his chair.

Alicia caught the jar in her good hand and came into the office, perching on the edge of one of the chairs as she finegaled the lid of the jar off.

"Yeah. Bad curse on one of those vaults on the lower level. Probably had Dark Magic in it." She gave a soft sigh of relief as she slathered the paste on her hand, then looked back up at him. Lately they'd been so busy she'd barely said two words to him, although they'd never been close as colleagues. Lately though, it was pretty much just them here along with some of the much older men, so the two of them seemed to be getting the brunt of the work.

"One of those vaults that hasn't been opened in a generation or two?" he asked with a raised eyebrow. "That requires a wild ride down to the bowels of the bank." He'd had to deal with a few of those in his time here.

He expected to have to deal with more of them since the staff had been cut. "Quiet around here lately." He leaned forward and peered down at her hand. "And you might want to try a healing charm, too."

"Those would be the ones." She took his advice and cast a healing charm on her hand, the discoloured skin turning back to normal.

When she looked back up, she nodded at his comment. "It has been. Course, there's only like.. four of us? So it's hard to be terribly noisy."

"I think there are more Ministry mi - "

He caught himself with a reminder that he didn't really know anything about this girl. Aside from the fact she was a cursebreaker like him. And a Gryff.

" - Ministry personnel than bank employees these days." Then he shugged and smiled. "I actually saw Griphook doing customer service yesterday."

Alicia's eyes flickered up to him as he spoke and then corrected himself, and she furrowed her brow. He was Fred and George's older brother, of course. She knew that, but she didn't know him personally.

"I would have paid good money to see that," she said, crossing her arms and leaning against the chair more heavily. "And it seems to me there are lots of ... Ministry officials poking their way into unwanted places lately." It was a bald statement, but partly the truth.

Well, perhaps this girl wasn't unsympathetic to the cause after all. However, he still didn't know how much he could trust her. Perhaps he could suss out her true feelings.

"Yeah. It's amazing they've got the time what with Harry Potter on the loose." He was careful to keep a sarcastic tone from his voice, making it sound matter-of-fact. "You'd think that would keep them all busy."

Then he paused and looked at Alicia. "You went to school with Harry, right? The twins' year, weren't you?"

The look on her face probably betrayed her surprise, but she stuffed it down. Certainly he didn't believe all that about Harry, did he?

"From what I understand they're devoting a great deal of manpower to that hunt," she said.

She could still recollect the conversation with Selwyn on that matter.

"And yes," she said carefully. "I did. And I know your brothers pretty well. Strange actually. Lots of people interested in what I know about Harry lately. The Ministry, other people, you." Perhaps some of her frustration came out in her voice, but at this point she really couldn't help it.

She didn't believe that nonsense about Harry. Which was good. Didn't mean she didn't like what He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named (and wasn't that the truth now with the jinx on his name) had to say though.

"The twins are usually good judges of character. All of their joking aside." He shrugged. "And I know Harry fairly well. So I'm not inquiringas to what you know about him."

"That's good." She considered her feet for a moment.

"I pretty much told the people that asked the truth, that I don't know anything about him." She pursed her lips. I got taken into the Ministry that day of work I missed a week or so ago and questioned, by one of the Aurors. And Bellatrix Lestrange." She kept her voice even and expressionless, remembering Selwyn's reaction.

Bill nodded. He wasn't surprised that she'd been hauled in. She had gone to school with Harry. In the same house. And on the same Quidditch team. The Ministry was peering under every rock, it seemed, in their quest to find Harry.

"I had the pleasure of being questioned by the undersecretary herself. Although I think it was before Lestrange was pardoned."

Alicia kept her opinions to herself about that. The experience with Selwyn had made her touchy, it seemed.

"There seems to be quite a change in Ministry personnel," was all she said. "Sort of like around here." She gave him a little smile. "So. We both survived it at least."

Bill returned her smile. "I think that is due more to an accident of blood than to any great expertise on our parts."

And that was likely enough such talk for one day. He reached for his paperwork again. "You've likely got enough work considering. Good talking to you, Spinnet. You can keep the burn salve by the way."

There was something off about his comment. It confused her, and she felt a rush of colour to her cheeks. It almost felt like an insult somehow, and she wasn't sure why.

"I suppose so," she replied. She gave him a tight smile. "Thanks, but I'll put it in the break room, that way it's there for whoever needs it." She gave him a little wave and stood up. "Try to have a better day."
