Remedy for Treason is the first in the series of medieval mystery series that takes place in Girona, Spain 1353. Many historical mysteries take place usually in the United Kingdom and America so Spain is a choice that's intrigue me. The closest word I can think of the main character is "detective", more of the vein of Ms. Marple rather than someone like Kojak. He is blind Jewish physician named Isaac who lives in th Jewish quarter with the wife Judith, eldest Raquel, and young twins. A respected physician in the 1300's when there is still superstition and fear of the unknown especially about medicine and diseases and he helps the people with Raquel being his eyes and sometimes ears.
At the beginning of the book he is treating patients from the plague when he receives a summons from the Bishop of Girona to investigate a murdered nun found in the public baths. He can travel as a doctor in places no one else can and along the way finds out that the nun is actually an attendant to the Queen. So why the deception? Why the murder?
Political intrigues of Spain during Issac's time is probably a clue to the mystery of the dead nun and Caroline Roe give enough history such as Jews were treated in 1300's Spain, the setting of the quarter, how people of different faith, class and race treated each other back then.
Major characters have rich backgrounds but she does this as well with the minor ones and in further books you'll know them better. You have to read sometimes carefully because if you are not, you might get a just little lost but I didn't have that as the major problem as I picked up later in the reading. I picked this book up in the B&N noble store, just needing something to read and the cover looked interesting. The back information made me read it. It has a type of Colombo factor which grabbed me.
Hope you find it enjoyable as I did. If not, tell me. :)
