Standing behind the old apple shed, Zebidiah Hodgkins watched his classmate come down the shady path on his way home after school. He'd had an eye on Damon Wolffe for a while now, knowing he liked the blond haired boy more than just as a friend.
Just as Damon was nearly even with the old tumbledown building, Zeb jumped out and tackled the other thirteen year old to the ground.
"Hey!" Zeb exclaimed as he grinned at the blond.
"AH!" Damon went down with Zeb on top of him, school slate and books flying out to the side and stared up at the other boy. He grabbed Zeb's arms and rolled him over, glaring at him for a moment and pulling his fist back. "What's wrong with you? Ma's going to tan my hide if my britches are torn again. She done sewed these up twice already!"
"I just wanted to say hi," Zeb said quickly as he eyed the other boy's fist as he looked up at him. He licked his lips quickly and then hooked one hand behind Damon's neck and pulled his head down to give him a quick peck on the lips.
Damon froze and gaped at Zeb then sat up, quickly wiping the back of his hand across his mouth. "Whatcha do that for?"
Sitting up as well, Zeb looked at Damon and bit his lip as he shrugged. "Cuz," he said as leaned in closer to the other boy. "Don't you like it?"
Damon looked down at the ground then eyed his friend. "You're only supposed to do that to girls. Don't you ever watch the animals in the barn?"
Zeb pulled back and looked away. "My mama says you can like whoever you want to," he said as he made to stand up, his face red with embarrassment.
Damon reached out and grabbed Zeb's arm. "So does my Ma but..." He looked around then at Zeb again. "Why me? Why did you do it out here?"
Zeb shrugged again and met Damon's blue eyes. "You play baseball really good and you like spiders," he said and grinned. "You have a pretty mouth too."
Damon flushed and looked away. "'M not pretty. Only girls are pretty." He crossed his arms over his chest and huffed out a breath.
"You're handsome. Everyone says so," Zeb said, running one hand through his own red hair. "I waited for you out here so Seth wouldn't see."
Damon flushed again, looked around then back up at Zeb. "So you just wanted to say hi and didn't want Seth to see? That's why you... did what you did?" He ran a hand over his arms and looked away from Zeb, making certain there wasn't any one coming along the path.
"No, I didn't want Seth to get mad in case he likes you too," Zeb said as he took a step closer and pulled Damon into an awkward embrace, trying to kiss him once again.
"Wait!" Damon struggled against Zeb, pulling away from the other boy and looking at him curiously. "Seth likes this too? I thought he liked Loreen Prescott."
"I don't know, I just didn't want to have to fight him for you," Zeb said as he tried to get ahold of Damon again. "Come on, I want to kiss you again."
"Just a cotton pickin' minute!" Damon pushed at Zeb for a moment wondering if this was how Maryanne Snyder had felt last week when he'd tried to get her to let him feel her breasts. He looked around again then sighed when he didn't see anyone. "All right, one kiss but we need to go behind the shed over there so no one sees."
Zeb all but dragged Damon to behind the shed, pushing the other boy up against the side, his hands moving over Damon's chest.
"Okay, hold still, I want to do this right," he said as he tilted his head a little and leaned in, pressing his lips against Damon's and kissing the boy for all he was worth.
Surprised at how good it felt to have Zeb's hands on him, Damon groaned softly and wrapped his arms around Zeb's waist. Opening his mouth, he licked against the seam of Zeb's lips.
After a few minutes of kissing and rubbing up against Damon, Zeb pulled back and looked at the other boy. "You're my boyfriend now, okay?" he said as he pulled a green cat's eye out of one pocket and shoved it into Damon's hand.
Damon blinked, still slightly dazed from the feelings running through him, and looked down at the large marble in his palm. "Huh?" He shook his head and blinked again. "I can't go with you. I'm taking Susan Walker to the barn raising on Saturday."
Zeb's face fell as he heard Damon's words. "But, she's a damned girl!" he exclaimed angrily, shoving Damon in the shoulder.
Damon grunted and glared at Zeb, shoving him in return. "So! One kiss don't mean nothing. You didn't even ask if I wanted to be your boyfriend."
"Why don't you?" Zeb asked, trying not to let his hurt show at the fact he was being thrown over for a girl.
"It's not that I don't it's..." Damon swallowed, not looking at Zeb. "I'd already asked her before you pushed me in the dirt."
"Well... you want to be my boyfriend after Saturday?" Zeb asked as he reached out and grabbed Damon's hand. "You could be a secret boyfriend if you wanted to."
Damon looked down at his and Zeb's hands, remembering what they'd felt like on his chest and how it had felt to have the other boy's mouth on his own. It had certainly been different that any of the girls he'd touched and he definitely wanted to try it again. Looking back up at Zeb, he smiled and nodded, "All right, I guess. Secret boyfriend but you can't hit me if you see me with a girl."
Zeb flashed Damon a grin, bending down to pick up the marble that had dropped in the dirt during their short scuffle. Wiping it clean on the front of his overalls, he handed it back to Damon.
"Deal, but you have to meet me after school, okay?" he said as he pushed back up against Damon to kiss him again, growing excited from what they were doing. "Want to go swimming or something?"
Damon smiled lazily and nodded, kissing Zeb swiftly as he tucked the shooter in his pocket. "Got some chores to do, but yeah. Ma made some cookies yesterday and we can go swimming in the creek out back if you want to come to my house."
"I got to go home and feed first, but I'll be over in a little while. Want me to bring my pole too?" Zeb asked as he looked Damon over and grinned goofily. The boy thought for a moment and then bit his lip. "Your Daddy ain't home, is he?"
Damon shook his head and puffed up his chest. "No, his furlough ended last week. I'm the man of the house." He grinned. "Sure, bring your pole. My Da made some new flies for me. I'll ask Ma if she wants fish for dinner tomorrow."
Zeb grinned at the news the elder Wolffe wasn't in residence, reaching out to take Damon's hand. "Come on, I'll walk you home. It's what a good boyfriend does."
Damon looked down at Zeb's hand then looked around. Walking to the side of the shed, he peered around the edge then moved back behind the shed "You can walk home with me, but if we're secret boyfriends then no one can know, so we can't hold hands." He smiled at Zeb and leaned in to press a soft kiss to Zeb's mouth.
Zeb bit his lip and looked around as well. "I can for now, there's no one here," he said with authority. "You should listen to what I tell you now and I say it's alright."
Damon arched an eyebrow then glared at Zeb. "Say what? I ain't no girl that you can be telling me what to do."
Zeb rolled his eyes and made a face. "You're my boyfriend, Damon, and I'll look out for you. That's what my brother does with his boyfriend. It's the rules," he explained patiently.
Damon crossed his arms over his chest. "I don't think so. I'm the man at my house and I look out for my Ma. Nobody looks out for me. Why can I be the one that looks out for you?"
Zeb thought about this for a moment, turning the idea over in his head. He couldn't see any real reason why Damon couldn't be the one to look out for him. "What about we take turns?"
Damon eyed Zeb for a moment. "Maybe but secret is secret and that means you gotta listen to what I say too. You can't tell no one. Spit swear on it first."
Zeb spat in his palm and held it out, waiting for Damon to do the same. "I swear it."
Damon watched Zeb for a bit longer then held up his hand, spitting in his palm. He grasped Zeb's hand and shook it. "No hand holding. It's too girly."
"Are you going to tell Seth?"
Damon dropped Zeb's hand and stared at him, flushing suddenly as he thought about his best friend. "No! It's a secret! We swore!"
Zeb nodded. "Good, I don't want him to know," he said solemnly. "I don't want to have to fight him."
Damon narrowed his eyes at Zeb. "Why you gonna fight with Seth? He's my best friend and didn't do nothing. I like him."
Zeb didn't say anything, just shook his head. He'd seen the way Damon looked at his best friend from time to time. "I ain't gonna if I don't hafta."
Damon eyed Zeb for a moment then blew out a breath. "Well, you leave Seth alone cause I said so. Now if you want to walk with me then that's fine but no hand holding. I need to get cause Ma will tan my hide if I don't get the animals fed on time." He smirked at Zeb "And you better not have torn my britches either."
Zeb nodded and fell in step with the other boy. Whistling nonchalantly, he reached behind Damon and casually ran one hand over his bottom.
Damon yelped, his books flying once more and stopped, looking around the path quickly. "What are you doing?" He bent to pick up his books and wand, glaring up at Zeb.
Zeb grinned and waggled his eyebrows at Damon. "Just checking you out," he said as adult as he could. He'd spied on his brother and his brother's boyfriend and was trying to pull all the moves on Damon as he'd seen.
Damon bit his lip and wondered now if he'd been as grabby with the girls he'd taken behind the barn. It was a wonder he hadn't been slapped more, cause he was about ready to deck Zeb. "Look Zeb..." he looked around then back at Zeb "You can't just do that out in the open like that. We's a secret remember?"
"I know Damon, but there ain't nobody around. Come on, don't be like that," he cajoled as he put an arm around the boy's waist. "Let me kiss you again."
Damon let Zeb pull him closer. It had felt too good to be held by the other boy not too, besides he wasn't no shrew. He smirked at Zeb. "Just one cause we got to get home soon."
Covering Damon's mouth with his own, Zeb pushed Damon up against a tree and tried to work a hand into the waistband of his pants. Just like he'd seen his brother do.
Damon groaned and pushed up against Zeb's hand, reaching down to touch Zeb just like the other boy was doing to him. All thoughts of his chores and homework gone as new feelings of excitement flooded through him.
"Boy, what in the hell do you think you're doing?" a gruff man's voice growled as a heavy hand dropped onto Damon's shoulder.
John Wolffe looked down at his boy and the other one, his eyes taking in what he was seeing. He'd managed to retire from the service a few days early and had been walking up to meet Damon as a surprise.
Damon swallowed hard and looked over at Zeb then up at his father. Colour infused his face as he looked away and toed at the dirt on the ground. "Nothing, Sir," he whispered softly.
"Doesn't look like nothing to me Damon," John said and then looked down to Zeb. "You go on home now."
Giving Damon a look of commiseration, Zeb turned tail and ran for home.
John looked down at Damon, unsure of what he should say to his son, not having ever thought he'd come across this.
"Come on son, I'm home now. Let's go home," he said as he gave Damon's shoulder a squeeze.
Damon pulled away from his father, bending and picking up his books and started walking toward home. He looked back over his shoulder for Zeb, then shook his head, bowing his face to the ground and kicking at the dirt as he walked.
John gave a frustrated sigh. "Do you like him Damon?" he asked as he took the boy's shoulder once more, his grip firm.
Damon winced slightly and shrugged then looked up at his father. "He kissed me first! It wasn't my fault!"
"I never said it was your fault Damon, I asked if you liked him. He seems to like you," John said, easing up his grip a bit and keeping his voice neutral. He wasn't upset that Damon was exploring, he just didn't want the wrong people to run up on him while he was doing it.
Damon scowled. "I don't know if I do anymore now."
John chuckled. "I can understand that, he didn't bother sticking around to see to you, did he?"
Damon smirked and looked up at his father. "I'm a man. I don't need anybody to see after me."
John carefully considered his son for a long moment and then nodded. "I suppose you are at that, Damon, I suppose you are. Your mama was telling me that you're taking the Walker girl Saturday," he said to calm his son's ruffled feathers. "The little dark haired girl, right?"
Damon grinned and shuffled his books to the other side then looked up at his father. "Yeah. Susie's really pretty, Da. We're still gonna go, right?" He bit his lip, wondering if getting caught with Zeb would have any effect on his going to the barn raising dance.
"Well, seeing as how breaking a date with your mama could result in me being killed, I'd allow that we'll be there," John said with a chuckle and then stopped in the middle of the old dirt road, pulling Damon around to look at him.
"Son... who you like and care about is your business, do you understand? I know you're going to kiss and whatnot, but make certain you're in a secure area and with someone that isn't going to cause you trouble."
Damon nodded as he sighed out a breath and toed the dirt again. "I tried to tell him that but he wouldn't listen. Boyfriends are dumb." He looked up at his father. "Least girls do what you tell them."
John threw his head back and laughed loudly. "Damon, boy, just you wait until you try to tell a female what to do," he said as he looked down at his son. "Don't ever let your mama hear you say that. Let's go on home."
Damon grinned. "Well they do! Alls you have to do is smile at them and they go all soft and stuff. Works for me all the time. Even on Mama." He started walking again, his heart a little lighter and hoping now that Zeb wouldn't show up later to go swimming. He'd just have to give him his shooter back and stick to girls from now on.
The End
