Disclaimer/claimer: Characters owned by George Lucas. Dialogue influenced by ROTS novel. Critiques: Yes. Summary: Who called sorrow sweet? I walked with Obi-Wan slowly, our cloaks billowing behind us. Silence surrounded us, thicker than it had been in some time.
"I won't be gone long," Obi-Wan said, a soft smile on his face.
"You shouldn't be going alone, Master." Emotions aside, it made no sense; I didn't understand why the Council would split team Kenobi-Skywalker for such an important mission. Granted, I'd just been given the despicable order to spy on the Chancellor, but in my mind this was more important. Grievous needed to be caught.
He placed his hands on my shoulders. "Don't worry, Anakin. Everything will work out all right." His smile grew. It looked like he was trying to convince himself.
"You'll need me on this one," I persisted. "Please."
"It's probably just a wild bantha chase," he said, beginning to bow, a sure sign he was leaving.
I scrambled for anything to delay him just a moment. I had a sinking feeling that I may not get another chance to speak with him again. "Master, I--I've been arrogant, selfish, and unappreciative of your training. My frustration is purely with the Council. I offer no excuse, Master. None if it is your fault."
"Anakin, you are wise and strong, and a great credit to the Order." He looked up, and now his smile was genuine. "You're compassionate and kind, generous and courageous. You have done great things, and I am very proud of you."
I didn't know what to say. Or I did, and I was afraid to say it.
"Good-bye, old friend," he whispered, and Force-fingers brushed the soft place just behind my left ear, feather light. "May the Force be with you."
I watched him walk away, my stomach falling with every step he took.
That was the last time I felt him touch me, and it wasn't even skin on skin.
