"Well, how do I look?" Ranul spread his arms out and turned in a slow circle. It had been nearly eight years since the last time he had worn a Starfleet uniform. During the command staff tour he had worn his simple Guardian's robes since he had still been waiting for new uniforms to be replicated. He couldn't exactly say it was great to be back in the Starfleet colors, but it didn't feel as awkward as he thought it was going to be either. Camille and Rhyst Hawk looked on appreciatively. "Very handsome," Camille commented. She stood just behind Rhyst with her hands resting on his shoulder. "By the way, your little creature ruined a stack of clean towels this morning," she added, ruefully. "Apparently they were just what he was looking for to make a nest." "Oops," Ranul mouthed. "Aheh, yeah, it looks like Morris escaped from my room sometime during the night. I'll send you some new ones when I get to the Odyssey. Camille waved her hand dismissively. "Oh please, don't bother. I've been looking for an excuse to do some redecorating. You might want to take the remains with you. He actually hissed at me when I tried to shoo him away." Ranul scowled. "I've never seen him do that. I think the upheaval might have had a negative effect on his mood. In the wild, Lurian sloths tend to stay within a small territory most of their lives. Then again, the domesticated sloths don't bear much in common with their wild cousins—" "Oh, before I forget, I have another book for you," Camille said, interrupting Ranul's lesson in Lurian sloth biology. She released Rhyst from her grip and made a quick exit. Ranul looked at Rhyst who simply shrugged. "Here," Camille said, handing Ranul a regular PADD after he'd followed her into the library. He activated it and glanced at the title. The Odyssey, by Homer He looked up at Camille and quirked an eyebrow. "I thought you might like to read the story that your ship is named after," she explained. "I thought the ship was named after another ship that was destroyed at the beginning of the Dominion war," Ranul countered. "Yes, but that ship was named after this story." Camille tapped the PADD with her fingernail. "It's nearly 3000 years old, which.. is old in human terms. She smiled, knowing that some races, such as Trill, were much older than humanity. "Well, thank you," Ranul said. "I didn't even realize where the name came from." He felt something brush his leg and looked down to find Morris lying on his foot. "Well, there you are!" Ranul bent down and scooped the creature up and settled Morris on his shoulder, letting him wrap his tail several times around his arm. "Ready to see your new home?" Morris flicked his green, forked tongue in reply. *** Ranul leaned closer to the window of the shuttlecraft and whistled. "Wow, that certainly is a monster," he said to no one in particular. It was his first time seeing the Odyssey from the outside and it dwarfed the Galaxy-class ship that was resting in the adjacent dry-dock. "Somebody could get lost in that beast." Without looking away from his controls, the Vulcan pilot replied to his comment: "Unlikely. Every Federation starship is equipped with an internal navigation system to prevent such an occurrence." "Ah," Ranul said, leaning back in his chair. Remember, never try making small talk with a Vulcan. He stuck his fingers through the grill in the front of the pet carrier that sat on the floor next to him. Morris nibbled on them affectionally. "Coming into Shuttle Bay 3," the pilot announced moments before the shuttle passed through the semipermeable membrane that separated vacuum from atmosphere. |
