Who: Admiral Ross (NPC); tag Captain Mason and ALL Senior Staff (Chiefs & Asst Chiefs)
Earth Date: April 5, 2382
Where: Captain’s Ready Room then to Conference Room
What: First Assignment
Rating: PG
Status: In Progress

“Hello Gideon, congratulations again on receiving this command, it’s a fine ship.”

"Thank you, Will. Cut to the chase - you didn't send me a priority one message to make small talk." Gideon said with a wry smirk.

"You're absolutely right," Admiral Ross pursed his lips, appearing unamused.

"Unfortunately your first mission wont be purely exploratory. I’ve received word that several doctors have gone missing in the past few months; some were Starfleet, others were not. However, they all resided on planets in the beta quadrant. We’re counting five right now, but it may be more. Communications with the Klingons and Romulans hasn’t been easy so it’s unknown if they have anyone missing as well. Starfleet has just now noticed the trend and we need you to investigate the matter. I will be sending you what little information I have about the doctors from Starfleet Intelligence, though witnesses and intel have been scarce. The only thing unusual we’ve noticed is that long range satellites have been picking up more frequent ship activity in a region known as the Kalorus System, which is usually a quiet area. There is an extreme lack of information regarding this system, it hasn’t been officially explored by the Federation. Nearby inhabitants say there is a civilization called the Vorducaat that control that area of space, but again, we can‘t confirm that."

The admiral continued.

"Now Gideon, I know this is the Odyssey’s first endeavor and because we don’t know the risks involved, two other ships will be accompanying you. The USS Gorkon and the USS Cairo."

The admiral leaned forward in his chair.

"I can’t tell you enough how important it is we find these doctors. They are some of the most decorated and well-known scientists in this quadrant. I’ll keep you posted with any further info I receive."

"I understand, Sir. I'll let you know as soon as we've found anything. Odyssey out."

"Good luck."

The admiral was gone before Gideon could respond. But then, he didn't really want to. He turned his chair toward the window. He understood completely. Before his ship had even left dock, they had a dire mission. At least they wouldn't be alone. This is what Cpt. Mason had been afraid of when he'd taken this command. Having accompanying ships felt suspicious. He tapped the com button on his desk and called Olivia to the ready room to organize a meeting of senior staff.

Gideon waited in his ready room as Olivia called the senior staff to the meeting. They hadn't even left space dock and they were already on a rescue mission. No grace periods in Starfleet. He scanned the information Admiral Ross had sent over. Each doctor had pages and pages of accomplishments and had contributed a great deal to the Federation, it was no wonder the Admiral sounded so urgent. He checked the map and where his brand new ship (and crew) were being sent. "Oh good, we were heading that direction anyway." At least it was in the beta quadrant.

After a few minutes had passed, Gideon decided he'd given his officers enough time to assemble. He left his ready room and went directly to the conference room through the door that connected the two. That was handy. Everyone was seated, aside from Olivia, who was standing at attention between her and his chair. "At ease Commander." Gideon moved to stand behind his chair at the center of the table.

"Thank you all for your promptness. This is a little earlier than I hoped for a meeting like this but... this is Starfleet." Gideon cracked a smile, everybody in the room knew the unexpected was expected here. "Admiral Ross has just informed me that five the Federations most prized Scientists have gone missing. It is a top priority, our top priority to locate these men and women. According to Starfleet intelligence (their best guess anyway), they've been taken to a system in the beta quadrant. It's pretty much unknown territory and long range sensors haven't helped. They think some sort of dampeners are effecting their scans." Gideon took a breath and examined his staffs faces. Good, no one looked bored yet.

"Olivia, prepare the ship for departure. I want this ship ready to leave
- five minutes ago. Commander Long," Mason turned to Dave. "The species Starfleet thinks is behind this, there are a few intelligence reports on them. Try and give me a report on their psychological state." He wanted to know what he was going to have to deal with.

"Commander Keru, do whatever you have to do to the sensors. I want a clear picture of what I'm flying Starfleet's newest ship into. Commander Dalzen, I need a report on the Scientists themselves. They all seem to have a medical background. Try and find any connection between them, their specialties. Lieutenant Caine, I want your people to understand there are a lot of civilian's on board that don't know the difference between red, yellow, aqua-marine alert. Make them." One of Gideon's worst nightmares was civilian causalities, so it just wasn't going to happen.

"And my engineer's." Gideon turned to his 'Chief engineerless assistants.' "It's a new ship, full of bugs. Stay on top of them, pull crew from anywhere you need. I'll be meeting with your Chief later to decide his fate. In the mean time, keep up the good work."

He returned his gazed to everyone now. "Questions, comments, or concerns?"

"I'll need to coordinate with Engineering..." Ranul said, glancing sideways at the assembled engineers. He had no idea what exactly was going on with that department but had heard word of some sort of disruption in the command structure. If there was internal turmoil in the department, it didn't bode well for his ability to carry out the Captain's orders.

"Is there any information on when the Scientists were last heard from specifically, and where they were at the time of transmission?" T'Vraeya inquired.

Whatever they had last been researching would be of particular interest. Location would as well. If there was something common there...then it was a location that Starfleet should be monitoring. What had the potential to be much, much worse was an insider within Starfleet reporting on where the specific Scientists would have been at the time, in order to arrange for such successful kidnappings.

Sebastian was excited by the news that their first mission would be one of import. That in no way detracted from the seriousness of the situation, nor lessen his concern for the safety of the missing scientists. It was merely a function of the adrenalin surge the information brought about. There was nothing to question. He would have to verify some details with tactical, of course, and reassign some personnel to stay on top of the civilians, but otherwise there was only one appropriate response.

"Everything will be at the ready on my end, Captain."

He listened to the others voice their questions and concerns, thankful for the divergent points of view. It could only enrich his grasp of the situation.

Though the demoted Chief had been confined to his quarters for the rest of the day (where he spent actually looking up his team's profiles and noticed that many of them were quite green) per orders of the First Officer, a meeting with the Senior Staff came from higher up the command chain and he was obliged to leave his room in order to attend the emergency conference. In the hustle and urgency of a new assignment, his shame and humiliation sank to the back of his mind.

Aaron listened attentively as the Captain spoke. He was overselling his stance after that first humiliating impression. He didn't want to embarass himself in front of the rest of the Senior Staff. The fact that the Captain acknowledged this incident publicly, however, brought Aaron's confidence back down.

"If I may speak on behalf of the engineering crew, sir, all diagnostics have shown positive results. This is to be expected of a ship of this new. But the moment we may run into trouble, I can assure you that this team is the best you can gather this side of the Quadrant. Many of them may be new to Starfleet, but their references are quite impressive." Aaron suggested almost meekly. He wasn't quite sure what his position was now, having been demoted, but he had been the one who ran all of the tests and checked out the ship's hardware for the last two weeks. Aaron hadn't had the time to debrief his engineers prior as they looked at one another, unsure of what to say.

With the presence of Lt. Com. O'Connor, (whom she'd been working under for days), Gaia wasn't quite sure if it was her place to speak on behalf of engineering or not. At the Captain's brief smile, she felt the tension ease from her body. As he spoke, however, it slowly built back up again. Commander Keru's interest seemed to have peaked just when hers had, however - at the mention of the sensors. She nodded to him when he spoke, but decided to wait until Aaron was finished speaking to the captain before addressing the issue. She paused. He wasn't particularly rigid or (apparently) rule-abiding, but O'Connor knew what he was doing. She knew it for a fact. She also knew that being Chief Engineer wasn't a place she was comfortable with, presently. "Captain, if I may-" the Brit began, "-Lieutenant Commander O'Connor is absolutely the most qualified engineer aboard the ship for the position of Chief. I will perform his duties as long as is required, sir, but I would much rather be working with him than without." She cleared her throat and turned to Ranul, "Commander - hopefully with the help of our Chief, we will be running scans soon." Everything about the missing scientists felt threatening to Callahan. Someone out there was desperate. She planned to help them find out who (and why).

Doctors. Right. And they were headed right into the issue. Dave felt perfectly safe, now. When Gideon spoke to him directly, he turned his head fully to face the Captain (as he'd been visually poking at the minds of the other senior staff). "Yes, of course sir." He nodded, lips pursed. As a fellow doctor, he felt inclined to answer Dalzen's questions. "I believe that those are our questions to answer now, Lt. Com. When we're through with our assignments I suggest we collaborate before making our reports." Compare notes, at least. Doctors had to stick together now, apparently. Engineers surely were. He refrained (barely) from rolling his eyes when O'Connor spoke. It was in David's experience that engineers always lathered praise upon each other in turn. It was as if they were the only group that require cooperation upon a vessel. He almost envied them. Almost. Then Callahan chipped in, proved his point, and eye-molested the Captain before giving a chipper, (most likely empty) promise to Ranul. Super! "Right." At least Caine had been to the point. "Commander?" he looked to Olivia, whom he knew had to be busting at the seams to leave orbit. When the Captain had responded to the engineers, he was going to take his leave. He had things to do that didn't involve inter-personnel back-patting.
