The cells were being recorded, of course. The wizard liked keeping tabs on his prisoners, even if he wasn’t actively preoccupied with them. In the early morning, he would quickly review the tapes and watch his prisoners pace about their cells and sleep, catching snippets of their conversations. He’d seen the botched escape attempt of the kimuho and the kitsune. He admired the dragon’s persistence and the giant’s tenaciousness. He wasn’t impressed by the nymph and the demonic ones. And then, one day, he’d caught a flash of a song. The siren. Without realizing, he rewound the tape, finding the beginning and the end of it, isolating the song.
It was beautiful. It reminded him of… of something he’d lost, a long time ago. Something he had forgotten about. A girl on a summer day, but the details eluded him. He rewound the song again, listening, trying to remember the details…
The warlock knew about the dangers of a siren song, but he considered himself above such things. Besides, surely the song would lose some of its potency through the recording, right? And yet, every day, he found himself listening to the song again and again, neglecting his duties. This night, he hadn’t gone to bed, instead listening to the recording of the song, trying to solve the mysteries of it. What did it remind him of? Why couldn’t he forget about it? What was the magic of the song?
As the warlock tried to solve the mystery of the siren song, he entirely forgot about paying attention to his mines. Even transporting the prisoners to their final home had taken the backseat. He didn’t even notice a small group of students sneaking into his mines. Fortunately for him, his sentries did…

The plan went swimmingly. While Claire and Barclay split off, following the scent of the mandrake roots. The rest of the group pressed on, on their toes. A couple of the golems smashed into the group at a crossroads, scattering them in all directions.
