To encounter a personification of death itself was a bizarre thing, especially when it was far before his own time to pass and something that he didn’t believe was real in the first place. That was saying something considering how much he already knew was real in the world around them. He really shouldn’t have been at all surprised. However, he was bothered enough by the discovery to spend the next few days seeking answers. He poured through books that had already been read, and he prayed for the information that he had not been given. In the end, he got was he was looking for.
Donovan the shepherd wasn’t just parlor trick magician sacrilegious stealing souls from his society. He was the legitimate Death for their region. While the cleric wouldn’t dare to question his god’s judgement. Not when it was the judgement that also placed him in his current position. However, the man struck him as odd. Even careless. He wasn’t sure what to really think.
Then he remembered a name that had been scrawled into that little black book he had. His cook was fated to expire soon. He knew that the temple would certainly find a swift and suitable replacement, but he appreciated the meals that had been cooked for him since he was a toddler. Even so, he acknowledged peacefully that everyone’s time had to come eventually. If it was his cook’s time soon, then he was at least going to quietly take advantage of the moment.
He knew the day, and he kept an ear out. When word passed to him of the cook’s death, he requested that the body be taken care of in the temple out of respect for the years of service. And then he proceeded to hang around in the hallways around where the body was until death decided to show itself.
There he waited.
