Who: Valkyrie
Where: Barracks, Asgard
When: some time after she took Torunn to the Armory
What: Feelings
Status: Closed, Narrative
Valkyrie had shown off the armory to Torunn, then sparred with her and her niece's new toy, before she left her in the good hands of ... well probably Thor but whoever - and disappeared further into the depths of the Palace. She'd been told, with no uncertain terms, that she was staying in the King's chambers and she could only protest because she needed to because she knew better. She was pretty sure someone would have dragged her back up there if she had said no and put her foot down.
She was smarter than that. Frigga was a force of nature, and Thor was downright single-minded - she never stood a chance to hide elsewhere. It was simpler to agree and just go with what was suggested.
But for now, she was free to disappear for a bit and she slipped away from everyone else, making sure to move through the place as stealthy as possible. After a few more glances back she found the passage, and the door, to the Barracks. She stopped in the door, then took a deep breath, stepping inside. Not much made her want to curl up and cry, but this did. It was different than what she remembered, things had changed in the fifteen hundred years she was gone from here. But it was almost the same.
And it hurt. But also, she had missed it.
Complicated feelings were complicated and she hated that fact a lot. She stepped inside, finally, and ran her fingers over the walls, thinking about all of the nights she'd spent here. They were not far from Odin's chambers, they needed to be at a quick beck and call, but it was far enough she did not think any would come looking for her here.
Her hand trailed over stone, marble, across the woodwork and down over one of the beds. Then slowly over a footlocker. The place had been used for the common guards, long after she and hers had been gone. But it still felt the same, like blessed ground for her. A wistful smile curled her lips as she sat down on one of the footlockers and looked around.
Then she buried her face in her hands, not crying but letting herself just think. She didn't know if she could pull any old memories from herself here, but if she soaked it up long enough, she might just be happy for a few minutes to see the place again. For now, it was hard, and it hurt in ways she'd never expected.
She'd find her way out later, find something else to linger on, to remember. But for now she let herself get lost in the memories of a place long gone.
