Billy hadn’t bothered checking to see if his housemate was in. It was mid-morning and from the shuffling about he’d heard the day before Billy - perhaps unreasonably- had assumed maybe his housemate was a morning person and thought that he’d definitely sulked around long enough for there to be no chance of meeting. He was enjoying their game of post-it tag, though, as much as he didn’t want to admit it.
Being able to magic himself clean was great, especially when his depression got the better of him and the effort required to shower was greater than he had the capacity to handle, it just… sometimes Billy wanted a shower. Today was one of those days.
Valentine’s Day had come and gone and Teddy was still not here, and he was still not home. He’d said to Wanda, even if he was, he’d have still been alone. Teddy was off doing...something and he was more often than not chasing after the Vridai and helping find somewhere new to locate them so they weren’t infecting earth anymore. God, his life sucked.
He turned the heat all the way up in the shower and let his head hang under the steaming water until it started to run cool, ignoring the way the pipes protested and his skin tingled. It would fade quickly enough, but the heat on his skin had felt good, like a balm against something that was hurting all the time. Billy didn’t handle being alone well.
Eventually he stepped out of the shower and rubbed his towel through his hair, strands artfully mussed. He patted his arms so his fingers didn’t drip everywhere. Then he secured the towel around his hips and just breathed. Avoiding looking at himself in the fogged mirror, he just stood letting the steam bead against his skin for a while, certainly long enough for someone to have thought he was done. Figuring he was still safe, Billy took another breath before padding out of the bathroom only to see the bulky outline of his housemate in the open plan kitchen. Well, he supposed, it was only a matter of time before Operation Avoid-The-Housemate blew up in his face.
Maybe he could sneak back to his room without being noticed? The guy was interested in the fridge and hadn’t opened the heavy blackout curtains yet so they were still swamped in darkness, except for the housemate who was silhouetted and him, lit up from behind like a Christmas tree from the bathroom window that didn’t have a blind.
Teddy had definitely been living in a state of limbo as far as his elusive roommate went which was kind of weird but he also respected the fact that the other person clearly had their own stuff going on and they were communicating via post-it notes. Still, Teddy was generally a very social person and he liked being around people so being here alone without anyone or anything familiar was unsettling in so many ways.
As always he was ravenous first thing in the morning which meant Teddy made a beeline for the kitchen and more importantly the fridge. He’d assumed that his roommate had left for the day already considering the rest of the apartment was still and quiet so he was embracing his full fridge!gargoyle self in how he helped himself to a selection of snacks. He’d just filled a glass with orange juice when he became aware that he was not in fact alone and unconsciously his body reacted by broadening, rippling with plates, and overwhelming camouflaged skin with the deep green that was actually his natural shade.
Defensive mechanism? Possibly.
Swallowing the mouthful of strawberry he’d just put into his mouth Teddy turned his head and squinted ever so slightly as he was first unable to get a good look at this roommate before as the figure clad in a towel began to swim into focus his eyes widened. Billy. There was a rush of air from the sudden manifestation of wings which carried him lightly and effortlessly across the room to the point where he all but bundled and wrapped Billy up in his arms, elongated claws buried deep in the other man’s dark hair and face pressed against his neck.
Billy didn’t have much time to react, he saw the broadening of the figure in front of the fridge and by the time he’d registered wings and shoulder plates someone was in front of him and the light caught the sharpness of a face he knew well and a shock of blonde hair and Billy was looking up at Teddy who was lit up like a renaissance painting and he was there and in front of him.
Thank God Teddy was reacting because Billy was stuck in disbelief mode so when Teddy’s arms bundled him up and he pressed close, fingers burying in his hair and nuzzling against his neck and finally Billy got over his stupor and lifted his arms. The towel was, thankfully, secure around his waist because he stood up onto his toes a little so Teddy didn’t have to stoop too much and turned his own head, breathing in deeply and wrapping his arms around his fiance, biting back on the choked sob that threatened to escape him.
“Holy shit,” he managed quietly, voice tight with emotion.
It took Teddy another minute or so to realise that he might be holding Billy a little too tightly and the last thing he wanted to do was break his fiance in half especially as this was the first time that he’d seen him in a few months. Or an eternity as he liked to bemoan, privately. His grip loosened but only a little which honestly made little to no difference to the amount of space between them and Teddy leaned back to press his forehead against Billy’s.
A few deep breaths followed by a distinct and measured movement of hands to grip a little more at Billy’s form and hold it tight before Teddy offered a soft smile.
“Hey.”
“Hi,” Billy replied with an equally soft smile, blinking up at Teddy and cupping his face, running his thumbs along Teddy’s cheekbones, fingers catching the edge of his ear, the ever-present earrings still sleep-warm beneath his fingers. His voice caught a little and he closed his eyes, just for a moment, to gather himself before he did something really gay, like cry. He managed a little nod. “Hi,” he repeated, leaning back to get a good look at Teddy.
He looked okay, which was a huge relief. He looked like he’d been eating and someone had been taking care of him, that he hadn’t been sitting by the window of a space ship or a palace on whatever world the Skrull had stolen him to staring out of the window being miserable. That was- that was good.
“You’re here. You’re- you’re here? Really here?”
Teddy’s eyes closed at the feeling of Billy’s fingers roaming and exhaled a breath as it quite literally felt coming home. He knew he’d left this, left Billy, for a really good reason but right now he didn’t care all that much about any of that.
Whilst he’d been taking care of himself he could tell with one look that Billy hadn’t been sleeping and he’d definitely not been eating, call it his Billy Kaplan sixth sense or whatever, but he just knew.
“Really here, babe,” Teddy reassured Billy as he wrapped the back of Billy’s head with his hands and leaned down to kiss him, reaffirming the fact that he was here and present.
“Really here,” Billy echoed softly, leaning up to kiss Teddy back, standing on his toes and dropping one hand only to make sure that his towel was still secured around his waist. Nothing Teddy hadn’t seen before, of course, but still it wasn’t fair if he ended up naked and Teddy was still fully clothed.
When the kiss broke, he just tipped forward, resting his forehead against the hollow of Teddy’s throat, fingers stroking absently along his side. “I missed you. Our apartment sucks.” It didn’t, of course it didn’t. Their apartment was an expensive one with a view of New York City but still. It sucked.
Teddy let out a soft chuckle and he leaned in to gently nudge Billy’s nose with his own. “It doesn’t suck but it does when you’re alone.” He ran his fingertips which were more regular nails than they were claws along the curve of Billy’s back before trailing them into his hair where he lightly rubbed at Billy’s scalp.
“But we are definitely no longer back home.”
Because if they were then they wouldn’t be together like they were right now.
“No, we’re-” Billy bumped Teddy’s nose back affectionately. “-definitely not at home. This place is some kind of pocket reality.” A shiver ran down his back as Teddy’s fingers ran down his back and then up into his hair again. He wet his lower lip, fingers trailing lightly over Teddy’s shoulders, down his arms and then up into his hair again. “I missed you, God, Tee, I missed you so much.”
Teddy closed his eyes when Billy’s fingers disappeared into his hair and perhaps only slightly his hair grew a little longer in response so that Billy had a lot more of it to explore because it was legit the best feeling ever.
“Missed you too,” he replied softly as he lifted his gaze to rest on Billy. “Did you have any plans for today?”
“Just avoiding my housemate,” Billy admitted, tangling his fingers willingly in Teddy’s hair. “So nothing I can’t put off for another day. Did you have any plans?”
“Well, no, but I definitely have plans now.” And to accent his point he grinned as he bunded Billy up into his arms and rather promptly vanished into his or rather their bedroom - ignoring Billy’s comment about how their room should, theoretically, be his room since he’d been there the longest - to show Billy just how much he’d missed him.
Enthusiastically and for a long time.
