Is there anybody out there?
Harry has shown me how this device works, but it's hard to believe that simply by typing words into it that I'm able to be in touch with someone else. Is there anybody out there? I just want to see for myself that this works. I'm curious about things, that way. And I pray that this is not some form of black magic, or any of Voldemort's doing.

Very well, as you wish, Nikola. And please, call me Sirius. Mr. Black is my progenitor, and long dead.

I am indeed such a practitioner, although I know there are many who do not believe in such things. We call them muggles.

I understand. Even in our time, there are those who are not accepting of us. That is their loss.

Likewise, Nikola. That is an interesting name. Russian?

I shall do so, Sirius.

I admit I never considered that real magic does exist. It is an irony how certain men call themselves magicians yet they are, as you say, muggles.

I am merely human, having my own weaknesses, yet I try to not be judgmental of others as long as they aren't hurting anyone or harming Nature through sheer will or ignorance. I have met some gay people before but we wouldn't be discussing it like this on an open network. I didn't discuss it then with them either since it wasn't any of my business. And I have learned women at long last gained their suffrage. A lot of what I am finding pleases me.

I am originally Serbian, born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. My father was an Orthodox priest. Yes, Nikola is only one letter removed from Nikolai.

Most people don't. I think that it makes them feel safer if they don't believe.

Everyone has weaknesses, no one is perfect, of course. I only object to those who strive to hurt others purposefully, and while good versus evil is a slippery slope to travel, I do believe that some people are wholly evil, by choice. Most fall somewhere in between.

I think it is easier to be open about oneself on such an open network, as you put it. It lends to a certain anonymity.

As Remus would say, though, I am wont to put myself into the affairs of others in order to fix what is wrong and help those in trouble. Having magic makes that easier to do. Not easy, just easier.

So you are quite a long way from home yourself, here in this United States of America. Ironic, I had never thought to travel here, and yet here I am.

So not believing in magic of the kind you talk about but taking on faith the existence of God (the-allseeing-paternal-figure) makes many feel safer.

I also believe some are evil by choice, whether they seek riches and power, or some other form of influence. Unfortunately, some are stricken with diseases of the mind but this shouldn't be called evil as it wasn't his or her choice.

What wrong are you seeking to fix? Perhaps like a modern day magical knight?

I am an American citizen, good sir. Though I did travel many miles and lived in different parts of the world before. I lived in New York, you must realize. There is even a street corner honoring me. http://www.teslasociety.com/teslacorner.gif

May I ask where you are from?

Something like that, yes, I've yet to fully understand how one differentiates one from the other, but people manage to do so. I honestly do not know what my beliefs are as regards gods - whether one or many - but I like to think I have an open mind to possibilities.

Yes, there are some who are mentally ill, sad but true.

In our world an evil man is trying to usurp power, and he is filled with hate and death and seeks power for its own sake. We fought against him years before and believed him to be defeated, but he has arisen again, and our world is in jeopardy because of him.

I apologize, I did not realize. Harry? Can I ask you something? Oh, thank you.

My godson showed me how to use your... what did he call it? oh yes, a link. That's very intriguing, how you did that. Was that magic?

We live in London, England, in a home that has been owned by my family for many years, not too far from Kings Cross Station.

I believe there is something behind the universe or universes. Surely everything is alive.

I am sorry to hear what injustice is happening in your world. I hope it ends with the defeat of the evil. It is always the same story, isn't it, having one horror or another attempting to control all.

Links are electronic magic, in some ways. Of course we have math to write it out but can anyone truly answer the question of why should a link work or why should a photon travel through space to eventually leave its heat on a world? How did we even come to develop such thoughts? Do the thoughts want to be expressed and help create our minds or is it merely random, as some insist. Being random lacks poetry.

The British Isles is one place where I have been. I know London. From what I have seen, parts of it still look very much the way it did in my day.

I believe everything is alive, yes, and I think we may have more in common with them than we think. Which is how I believe the magic in us works, it responds to what is in the object we wish to use, whether it be a spoken spell or a wordless one, simply thought.

That is very interesting. I don't profess to understand it all. I don't remember ever studying that at school. You are very eloquent, I must say, Nikola.

Parts of London haven't changed for hundreds of years. Only reason some of it did was the Great Fire burned it down and they had to rebuild it.

I think I see what you mean, Sirius. Sometimes I feel painfully sensitive to my environment and need to withdraw. I have visions, as I call them. But they're not of the future or how people seem to generally define a vision. Most of the time mine involves seeing, as if on one of those HD televisions, what one of my inventions will look like and how it functions. This is what I have inherited and wizards like yourself are better tuned to the frequencies of magic intersecting both matter and space.

Thank you. I hope I have a certain level of eloquence. Part of my life is giving demonstrations to those who are curious and writing.

Ah yes, I believe almost all of London had to be rebuilt then. And it was... Charles II on the throne.

I confess to not knowing what HD television is, but I can appreciate what you are saying. There are some true seers that have genuine visions, and then there are the crackpots like Sybil Trelawney.

I appreciate being known as a wizard, rather than a sorceror. That has all the wrong connotations, I think. Merlin was a great wizard, and so is Albus Dumbledore. I have great respect for Albus. Sometimes he was strict, but it was generally for my own good.

Demonstrations? I should like to see such a thing.

Charles was certainly the life of the party, from what I've read. He liked to have a good time. Reminds me of when I was younger.

Is there a flatscreen tv in your flat? Perhaps Harry can help you with this? Have you seen movies? The visions can be likened to movies too. I was surprised when I first figured out not everyone has this ability.

I believe sorceror is originally from French so I called you wizard instead. Being from Britain, you did make me think of Merlin. Who is Albus? I see we will have much to talk about indeed.

Perhaps I can set a demonstration up in Central Park. It won't be anything new to the people of 2012, not in some respects at any rate. But they don't use wireless electricity.

Yes he was rather lively in pursuing certain interests. I'm imagining you had a lot of energy. And still do, don't you? Do wizards like playing chess, billiards and cards? Are there dances? New Years' celebrations? I would be very surprised if you're radically different from muggles.

I'll ask Harry. He's more in touch with the technological gadgetry in our flat. I've seen films at the cinema, yes, but a long time ago. Remus used to take me in our youth, when we got a spare minute. He knows more about muggle things than I do. My upbringing was... different.

Albus is a great man, the headmaster of our school, and a great wizard. One of the greatest.

Let me know, we live right by there. I love the park, it's so refreshing. I have to confess to not liking to be indoors too much, I've spent too much time inside in my life. Not by choice.

We play wizard's chess. Well, some of us do. And cards, yes. And the most wonderful game of all - quidditch - played on brooms. I played it at school. I was what was called a keeper. We celebrate holidsys, of course. Christmas, New Year's, Halloween. You're right, we have a lot in common, except that they don't know we exist but we know about them.

Most muggles get upset when they sense our presence, hence it being generally better that they don't suspect.

You are saying that there is more than being in tune with magic which sets you apart from muggles? The societies are different but not unrecognizable to those of us outside of it.

What is your school?

The park is indeed refreshing. I like to go there and feed the pigeons after a long stroll.

I would enjoy seeing this quidditch. A keeper? As in a goal keeper?

My family would say it's a matter of blood, but I disagree with them. Rather vehemently. Perhaps it's a mindset thing. People see what they want to see - or don't see it.

It's a wizarding school, Hogwarts.

Yes, similar to a goal keeper. I've seen a football game before, very exciting. Not quite as good as quidditch, but close. I mean what can compete with flying on one's broom, the wind in your face, racing across the field, or keeping the other team from scoring?

Unless, of course, it's riding on one's motorcycle.

Yes, one of humanity's timeless tales is disagreement with one's family.

Hogwarts is a different kind of name for a school. I like that.

I really wish I could see quidditch.

Are you saying you also fly on a motorcycle? What about autos? How do muggles not see this?

[info]black_knight

Well, I've completely broken with mine, other than my cousin Andromeda, and her daughter, Tonks. But I've learned that blood does not a family make, it's all about love.

It's a rather unique school, for obvious reasons. Only a few similar schools throughout the world.

I'd love to show you but we'd need a field, equipment and other players. Remus doesn't play, and... well, I can't think of anyone that's here that can play. Other than Harry, of course. He's brilliant. But two men does not a game make. Harry was the best seeker Hogwarts ever saw, he was brilliant. Oh wait, I said that, didn't I?

Just on my motorcycle. Something I did it to, it's not exactly standard and barely allowed. I've heard of a flying auto, Harry told me about one the Weasleys had.

Well, they would if you flew too low, there's a trick to that. You definitely don't want to be seen, that produces its own sort of trouble. Letting Muggles see magic. Yes, that brings down all sorts of trouble on one's head. I'm guessing not now, though, since none of the Ministry is about, thank Merlin.

These are exceptions, you understand. I think mine is the only flying motorcycle, I'm proud to say.

We truly have to talk face to face. I can take you and your family to dinner if you like.

Of course, there are rules about not letting yourself be seen. It makes sense.

Perhaps I will work up the nerve to ride on the motorcycle? If you approve. I'm not terribly afraid of height but something seemingly not supported such as the bike would be intense. If I'm in one of those hyper-sensitive times I know I wouldn't even attempt it.

And we'll have you to dinner as well, splendid!

I would be honored to show you how she works, and to give you a ride. She operates both on the ground and in the air. If we go airborne, we'll simply use precautions not to be seen.

She is supported when aloft, by air currents and the charms I've placed on her, and other charms that add lift and take away from her weight - ah, it's very complicated. I tinkered with her until I had it right. Charms was always one of my best subjects at school.

Yes, splendid! Let me know when you want to have dinner out.

I would be pleased for you to show me, Sirius. I have seemingly endless information to harvest but I welcome it. I doubt I'll be bored with all the catching up I need to do. And in addition, I have now met a real wizard, rather than a magician. The way illusionists work makes for fascinating studies of our minds but I imagine true magic is more satisfying. I'll find out, won't I?

That is most interesting and sounds completely unscientific. But of course, it is. And I'm glad not everything works out into an equation.

And you shall meet two more - my husband and my godson.

Real magic... is very satisfying, if it's good magic. Dark magic, while seemingly powerful, corrupts the one that wields it, rotting him from the inside out. Dark magic is to be avoided at all costs.

Some things must be felt and experienced.

I shall talk with my family and we can set a date then, if that is acceptable to you.

I look forward to meeting your husband and godson as well, of course!

Everything seems to have the dark and light side, unfortunately.

That is most acceptable. Until we meet (hopefully soon) I need to attend to other matters right now.

It is and will continue to be good to know you, sir.
