Who: Rémy Clements, Cameron Michaels
What: Rémy's birthday must be celebrated. Whether he likes it or not.
Where: Compton County Lockup Kitchen
When: 2:30-ish, November 3 (offical Rémy's Belated Birthday Day!)
Rating: where there's carob frosting involved the sky's the limit
Status: complete

Cameron sat on one of the stainless steel counters in the prison kitchen, idly swinging her feet and humming to herself as she waited for Rémy to arrive. The minor mess she'd made earlier was all cleaned up and cleared away, leaving nothing but a reusable hemp grocery bag on a nearby table as a hint of what she might be up to.

Jumping out at her new-found friend and yelling 'Surprise' was definitely not part of the plan. Rémy seemed to have a bit of a party phobia, so Cameron had opted to wait in full view of the swinging doors.

Singing 'Happy Birthday, Mr. President' Marilyn Monroe style, while an amusing thought--and coincidentally the version Cameron happened to be humming--was hardly a low-key greeting either. And she had promised Rémy low-key. Sigh.

Showing great restraint, Cameron settled for a sunny smile when the French-speaking zombie cat slayer opened the door.

"Happy belated birthday!"

It wasn't that Rémy didn't appreciate Cameron's efforts - indeed, he was quite touched that anyone thought he was important enough to warrant celebrating another years' worth of his existing - it was just that he was quite wary of whatever she had planned for him. True, she had promised 'fun and low-key', but how was he to know that that didn't mean giving him birthday beats and giving him a cake in the face? Sure, Cameron seemed sweet and innocent enough, but there really was no way of telling.

Thus, as he tiptoed quietly to the kitchen, he tried to try to calm his jitters so as not to appear ungrateful. Though he was not entirely successful at soothing his apprehension, he was at least able to greet her with a shy smile rather than jumping out of his skin once he pressed through the doors.

"Merci beaucoup... Merci de toutes vos bontés. You really didn't have to." he said meekly, breathing a sigh of relief when he realised Cameron was the only one there. He walked quietly over to where Cameron was sitting, trying his best to limp as little as possible. He really didn't want to look any more pathetic than he usually generally did.

Rémy wasn't sure whether having shared a kiss and a blanket tent with someone meant you could greet them with a hug later on, so tried to hop up onto the counter alongside her instead. When this proved difficult, he settled on stuffing his hands into his pockets and leaning against the counter beside her instead.

"So." he said finally, looking at Cameron then away again when he wasn't sure what else to say on the subject of birthdays.

"So, when is your birthday?" he asked her finally.

"December ninth," Cameron told Rémy promptly, adding, "I was born in nineteen eighty-six," for good measure. He seemed so nervous, she kind of wanted to give him a hug. Instead, she hopped down from the counter almost as soon as he'd leaned up against it.

Trotting over to a cupboard, she pulled out round, unfrosted layer cake, still slightly warm from the oven, out of hiding.

"I know you said you didn't really like parties, but I didn't want you to miss having a birthday. So I thought we could just have cake," she smiled. "All the icing and candles and stuff are in that bag."

Rémy made a mental note of her birthdate - at least he had around a month to try to figure out what he could do in return for this little shindig.

"Me too," he replied when she told him her birth year, despite the fact that she probably could have guessed as much on her own. He watched with interest as she walked over to the cupboard, wondering what on earth she had in store for him. When she turned back around, he realised she had baked him a cake.

Rémy just stood there, dumbfounded. His lips wobbled a little.

"You... you made me a... a cake?" he asked, and when that fact finally began to sink in, his eyes grew wide with tears behind his spectacles.

"No-one's ever made me a cake before," he sniffled.

So much for not looking pathetic.

Cameron beamed as Rémy's eyes widened, pleased that her surprise was such a success.

Except that wasn't happy disbelief. That was plain old disbelief-disbelief, and she was almost certain those were tears behind the thick glass of his lenses.

"I don't get it," Cameron said stupidly, blinking back at Rémy as he blinked back tears. Did he mean his parents had always bought his birthday cakes? That shouldn't be a cause for tears, should it?

Or maybe French Canadians didn't celebrate with cake! Maybe they had brioche or souffles or something. But still. His response was baffling. What kind of lousy family did Rémy have, anyway?!

Rémy took her disbelief to mean she'd been offended by his reaction and hurriedly tried to right the wrong he'd inadvertently done. He tried his best to give her a big, appreciative smile, even if his eyes were still moistened with wonder. He took off his glasses and wiped at his eyes with the hem of his sleeve.

"No, no, no, I'm delighted! I'm just a little... well, taken aback, is all. I don't know that I've ever had a birthday cake of my own, let alone one that someone made. Especially for me, even. I just... thank-you. I really can't thank-you enough."

He gave a small, disbelieving laugh of his own, then a truly genuine smile this time. "I'm sorry, I'm kind of pathetic." he sniffled, drying away the last of his sinus waterings. Now that he had nothing left to lose in the composure department, Rémy put all unsurity aside for the moment and opened his arms wide to give her a hug.

"You're wonderful," he said, truly grateful.

It was more natural to simply step into his embrace and return the hug than try to puzzle out why Rémy's parents had never seen fit to give him a birthday cake. Cameron leaned her head against Rémy's shoulder, content to just stay that way for a while.

"You're not pathetic. Your birthday was just interrupted by the apocalypse," she murmured. Why delve into underlying causes when they could point the finger at the living-impaired and remain in denial?

Rémy was reluctant to let go once he was ensconced in her embrace. It was hard to admit that sometimes the one thing that could make everything feel that much better was a simple hug.

"Funnily enough, I think this birthday's going to be just fine." he reassured her. He pulled back and beamed widely at Cameron.

"And wouldn't you know, this is my favourite kind of cake!" Rémy exclaimed, despite the fact that he didn't actually have a favourite kind of cake. Not before, anyways. This one likely was going to be his favourite now, if only because of the thought and love put into it.

"Did you say you had icing and candles?" he asked her enthusiastically, determined to show her just how happy he was with her belated little party.

"Maybe the outside world will get better by your birthday. You never know!" Rémy added hopefully, already trying to think up ways he could make it up to her for baking him a tasty treat.

Cameron reacted to Rémy's enthusiasm by scampering over to her shopping bag and laying out items on the table.

"I've got carob frosting and decorator gel," she said, holding up an assortment of little tubes. "I'm sure they're all full of high-fructose corn syrup," she grimaced, "but they're just to write your name with. And I've got sprinkles and candles and you can teach me how to spell your name correctly!"

Rémy smiled at her, touched by her thoughtfulness.

"Oh, c'est ne pas difficile. It's just 'R', as in 'raccoon', 'E' as in 'Elephant' - the accent, c'est ne pas important, really, 'M' as in 'Marmoset', then 'Y', like 'Yeti'. Rhymes with 'stemmy', that's all." Rémy explained, not realising that it was just the accent he pronounced it with that usually threw people off.

He picked up a small container of sprinkles and examined it, then looked back up at Cameron like an excited child.

"There's so much sugar here!" he said happily.

Cameron giggled happily when Rémy spelled his name with animals.

"I'll remember that," she promised, opening the tub of chocolatey frosting and scooping a generous blob onto the top of the cake with a butter knife.

"And I'll get you started. See? You just sort of spread it around, like peanut butter on bread!" If he'd never had a cake of his own, how could he be expected to frost it without help?

Cameron normally disapproved of refined sugar, but she found herself glad that she'd abandoned that principle for once. Rémy deserved a little sugar rush!

Rémy took the butter knife from Cameron and got started on icing the cake, just as she had instructed him. Ever the perfectionist, he did this with the greatest concentration, not wanting to ruin his first attempt at frosting.

"This isn't so hard," he said cheerily, pleased to not have completely demolished the food just yet. Normally, he was a fairly confident chef, but he was more than a little bit worried about ruining the cake Cameron had made for him. He only hoped that he wouldn't disappoint.

After he had finished icing the cake with obsessive-compulsive attention to detail, Rémy looked back up at Cameron for further direction.

"I think you ought to do the sprinkles," he said excitedly, setting the knife aside so that Cameron could work her magic.

"You're doing a great job. I wish I'd thought to bring a camera."

It was tempting to stick a finger into Rémy's near-perfect frosting job and put a little dab of icing on his nose. Cameron resisted the urge and grinned when he suggested she put on the sprinkles.

"Okay, and then we can both work on the lettering. Here goes!" She uncapped the little shaker bottle and began sprinkling with abandon.

Rémy watched her sprinklify the cake with enthusiasm - that looked like fun! More fun than perfecting the icing, at least. He almost wished he'd gotten more creative with his decorating.

"Magnifique!" he exclaimed, then upon realising saying things like that while cooking was a little cliché - he was not a talking rat, after all - added a Frenchless "That's fantastic!" instead.

Feeling a little emboldened by Cameron's abandon, Rémy's eyes wandered from the sprinkles to the icing-coated knife and back again. Though it wouldn't have been especially daring for anyone else, Rémy felt mischievous as he picked up the utensil and licked the chocolate off.

The sugar and cake fun was beginning to lighten him up a little, and he did not resist the urge to stick his finger in the icing and put a little dab of icing on her nose.

"Voilà!"

Cameron's eyes widened when Rémy turned the tables and did exactly what she'd contemplated doing to him.

"I am going to put sprinkles in your hair!" she cried, menacing him with the shaker bottle. At least, she tried to look menacing, a task made difficult by the wide grin on her face.

"Hold still!" Cameron might be a pacifist, but that didn't mean she was willing to back down from a food fight challenge!

"No! You'll have to catch me first!" Rémy laughed, not looking in the least bit menacing either as he scampered away, ducking under a table to hide when he got to the end of the kitchen and found himself cornered. He awkwardly bumped his head against the bottom of the table as he clambered into his very obvious hiding spot; it was probably quite apparent that he'd gotten much taller since the last time he'd tried to play hide and seek.

He sat on the floor, hunched over in order to fit and grinning like a loon.

"Nobody's home!" Rémy said, even as he scooted over to let Cameron invade.

Cameron took off after him with a shriek of laughter. How dare he run away?

"That's not fair!" she accused, trying to sound stern but instead dissolving into giggles as Rémy trapped himself under a table.

"Sit still and take your punishment like a man!" Cameron took complete advantage of his good nature and squeezed in beside him as he gave up ground. Funny, she thought, how the two of them always seemed to wind up recreating children's games. Maybe in a past life they'd been childhood sweethearts!

With that in mind she leaned in and gave Rémy an 'Eskimo kiss', rubbing her icing-dabbed nose against his.

Rémy blinked like a bewildered baby deer at the frosting on the end of his nose, eyes crossed. Rather than taking his punishment like a man as he'd been ordered to do, he replied with an accidental gigglesnort and covered his mouth to stop any more ridiculous sounds from coming out.

Cameron seemed to have an uncanny knack for bringing out his sillier side - he wasn't even sure he still had a sillier side until meeting her. He usually never laughed so hard or complained so little as when he was hanging out with his new hippie friend; she made it so easy to forget the world was a horrible place. Rémy wasn't sure he could say that he'd met anyone else that was capable of that, and he appreciated it more than Cameron probably knew.

He gave her the bashful half-smile he tended to reserve only for the people he liked the most and leaned in a little closer.

"Thank-you... for everything." he said quietly, and since this birthday was turning out to be the best one he'd had in recent memory, he saw no reason why he shouldn't be able to give his hostess a sweet, chocolatey kiss on the lips.

Without asking her permission this time, Rémy leaned in and did exactly that.
