Lupin had accidentally unearthed a vial of memory from the back of Snape’s bookshelf.

"I've forgetten I had this," Snape said, taking it from Lupin’s hand and placing it on the table.

“I thought I had thrown it away,” Snape said, “Obviously I didn’t.” He took Lupin’s hand instead and led him to the bedroom.

It was dawn soon enough, and Lupin woke up with Snape’s soft feathery breath against his skin. He shifted and ran his fingers over the deep crease upon his mate’s brow.

“What disturbs your sleep, I wonder?”

But Snape merely twitched, sighed, and burrowed closer.

Snape had left before breakfast, irritated that he should be summoned by Voldemort so early in the morning. He had jumped out of bed, cursing his way to the cupboard that held his robe and mask.

Lupin had taken a few moments to admire Snape’s bare behind, before raising from his side of the bed to go after the other man.

He had helped Snape dress, had placed a reverent kiss on those lips.

Then he was left alone.

It wasn’t long before Lupin spotted the vial from the night before.

How easy it was to intrude on someone’s memories.

“Mum.” It was Snape, his back to Lupin. Beyond him, a woman was crying, a man’s body in her trembling arms. “Why do you cry for him? Aren’t you happy he’s gone?”

The woman ignored him, only speaking to the still man in her arms. “Now you look every bit my dashing husband. Do you like the suit I chose for you?”

“Mum,” Snape called out, falling to the floor, crying into his knees.

When Lupin resurfaced, Snape was there, looking at him with those unfathomable eyes of his.

“Will you cry for me when I die?” Love me still?
