Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry

Hi guys! I asked Katy if this was alright and she said yes, so here we go. I wanted to try and work out specific information about Azkaban so that all the prisoners (and ex-prisoners) could have the same sort of idea about what it looks like, what goes on there, and all that jazz. I drew a couple pictures, but these are just rough drafts of what I think of about Azkaban, obviously those can change once everybody pitches in feedback.

I'm trying to add in all the things I can think of that I've referenced during logs and journal entries, so please throw out your ideas and information and I'll add anything as quickly as possible!

Azkaban Stuffs

Tower layout

Cell layout
(pretend they are the right shape)

I. Island, construction, levels;

The island;

  • Out 'somewhere' in the North Sea, Azkaban is perpetually exposed to the colder elements (which are more bearable in summer and less bearable in winter), and surrounded by a thick fog - which is aggravated by the presence of so many dementors.
  • A barrier surrounding the island protects it from apparition; only one floo connect to Azkaban (from the ministry). The only other way on or off is through an authorised portkey, flying, or swimming. It is unplottable.
Construction;
  • Azkaban is a large tower with a central staircase that leads out into the open, as well as to each level. Every cell has a window that leads either to the 'outside' elements or to the 'inside' elements (of the staircase).
  • Azkaban was made millenia ago by enslaved giants and is constructed of, simply put, big effing rocks. Though sturdy and nearly impossible to breach, very little thought was put into mortar or binding, so the insides are very very exposed to the outside weather, which doesn't help with the health of the prisoners.
Basement;
  • Contains house elves that do the "cooking" and transport the food up into the cells simultaneously (like it is done at Hogwarts). This way elves don't ever come into contact with dementors.

First level;

  • Human guards. Icky job but someone has to do it. These guys handle intake, putting the prisoners in cells, dealing with visitors of any kind, and generally keeping an eye on things.
  • Shifts go from 7am to 7pm; the prisoners are on their own after that.

Second through whatever level;

  • Houses the prisoners. There are 20 cells per floor in a circular pattern. Each "petal" (see above) contains four cells with the closest level of interaction. Prisoners can communicate best with cells directly across them and diagonal to them. They can hear cells beside them but obviously can't see them. Hallway vision is limited.

Top level;

  • Dementor playhouse; this is where they go when required to clear out for special visitors or guards who need to do rounds for some reason. It is directly open to the elements, so it's more of a 'roof' than a level.

II. Cell layout;

Clothing;

  • Prisoners are given no extra clothing upon entrance to Azkaban, and there is no prison uniform. Whatever the prisoner was wearing upon admission is what they will be wearing until it falls off of them, at which point, if the guards notice, they will be given highly uncomfortable, hard wearing trousers and a shirt of some kind.

Toiletries;

  • Privacy is granted but limited, and the toilet and water is located alongside the cell door for limited visual access. Though not exactly 'modern' facilities, the place is kept clean magically so that weird smells and icky things do not accrue.
  • A large trough of fresh cold water is provided to prisoners at all times for drinking and bathing. It's not fresh sierra springs mineral water, but it's potable.
Bed;
  • Let's just say posturepedic mattresses are not available. It's hard, it's uncomfortable, it's basically like sleeping on a piece of wood - which is probably what it is. On the plus side, no bugs would be caught dead on it, and it doesn't get lumpy.
  • One blanket is provided 9 months out of the year, pretty thin and all but useless. Another, slightly thicker blanket is given during 3 of the worst winter months (December, January, February) to keep the prisoners from dying of exposure outright.
Food;
  • Food appears near the cell door at 7.00am and 4.00pm precisely. It is positioned such that the prisoner is forced to go near the hallway to retrieve it. Dementors flock to the hallways during feeding times; those closest to the cell doors are worst affected, those furthest away are less affected - though if a dementor's attentions are on you, you're basically screwed.
  • During feeding times, the dementors have free reign of all cells and can do whatever they want except administer the kiss. Prisoners learn quickly not to attract any attention at these times lest a dementor decide to enter their cell.
  • "Food" consists of a rather unappetising grey gruel that contains enough nutrients to stay alive but not much to grow on. Variety is a luxury that prisoners don't get.

Yeah, but different mentality really. Sadness versus Fear.

*is in awe*

Looks great, my only change would be to say the walls between cells are 'two feet' thick rather than 'several'. Only because otherwise Justin has abnormally long arms!! ^_~

Might be worth mentioning that the food is fairly bland and tends to be the same morning and evening? I'm imagining a gruel that contains enough essentials to keep prisoners from being malnorished, but is the sort of thing that no one would touch unless they had no choice.

Angelina says she wishes she'd had one of those outside windows even though it meant she'd have been colder. She just got to look at the staircase which was not helpful to her claustrophobia!

Hey lady, I'm gonna put this up in the mod journal and such if you don't mind so that newbies can use this for reference and everyone else has easy access to finding it if its needed.

Thanks for doing this! Its really great.

I dreamt that Severus owled Charlotte a (good) blanket. I can't decide whether that's weird or not, lol. The dreaming about it, not the blanket bit.

Oh wow, this is amazing! The only thing I have to add is that Bella's made use of some kind of torture/interrogation chamber at Azkaban on a few occasions now but that could very easily just be a cell with the furnishings removed since it's pretty much just been described as "empty stone room." :)

That could work. I could also mention make one of the petals some kind of visitation room and say maybe that's on every fifth floor or something?

Lol, I'm endlessly amused by the Ministry calling a torture chamber the "visitation room"

Wow. You are awesome. There's a couple of things that have been mentioned in connection with Wayne:
1) Sophia's cell didn't have a window (http://hufflepoet.insanejournal.com/922.html?thread=17306#t17306)
2) Wayne and Demelza had a conversation about smell at one point (http://asylums.insanejournal.com/snitched/84330.html) "Wayne hardly noticed the smell anymore either. Only when it changed slightly, or a breeze from the window moved the air around. Armpits was the overpowering one, from the collective cold sweats of those around him, with grime, mould, bad breath, and countless others all mingled in to create a horrible stench. He hadn't noticed feet, but sniffing now he thought he could smell the strand of scent she meant."

I'm happy to say those things never were discussed if it is more straight-forward, though. Thanks for doing this!

2 is pretty straightforward - if they were both in an inner circle cell on the very bottom of the tower (like level 2 or 3, perhaps), then they'd get waftings in of small from anyone across them or above them (also in inner cells) who had given up trying to keep themselves clean - which I'd imagine eventually people do.

Number 1 is a bit trickier and I shall have to ponder it. It seems a bit improbable not to have windows because lack of circulation would seem dangerously unhealthy and, as Wayne pointed out, it'd be hard to see the journals!
