    Lazy day
Walked Juno, did 6 loads laundry, took Juno to the vet (time for a vaccine & also more heartworm med), and read a couple of novels. Now cooking beets (for me)and radishes (for SO) for dinner. Maybe will also make the little bit of broccoli; we've had the beans-and-greens 3 days running, so even though there's still lots, time for a break from those. Also have leftover baked chicken and noodles.

So, yeah. Basically a lazy day, in which no work for either teaching or school got done. I didn't even check those email accounts.

Have some fic to edit, and am gradually developing an idea for my Yuletide fic. Oh, and thanks to [info]cruisedirector for the AO3 invite - of course now I have tons to upload, but that's the way it goes.

    Blu-ray follow-up
Thanks for all your tea and sympathy about our boosted Blu-Ray player from Amazon. I'm going to go to the shipping office today to lodge a formal complaint and order a search and rescue. I'm really pissed about this.

Because people just don't wander past my house and think, 'Hey, I'm gonna take that package by the door.' Because they can't. Our house is perched up on a hill and has a long drive way. Even though there weren't any cars there, we come and go at odd hours, so someone watching the house wouldn't even begin to guess when we're there.

Then there's the Fred factor. Fred watches the neighborhood from the front deck. He's a barky dog, but only when someone invades his territory. And he goes nuts when anyone enters the yard.

Unless he was deeply asleep on our bed. In which case I need to have another employee meeting with him. He's falling down on the job.

After dealing with the lovely and very helpful customer service rep from Amazon who issued a refund, Boy1 and I went off to Best Buy, where, lo and behold!, the player I wanted was even less than the amazon price. So I bought it. Set up was incredibly easy OMG! so easy! and I settled in with Boy2 to finally FINALLY watch 'Star Trek'. And on our new HD tv--oh, such yummy goodness. So many details I missed watching it even in the theater *cough4timescough* HeadBoy commented on how much better it would've been on a 55" screen. *headsmack* In our small living room, 42" is a little overwhelming for me.

*sighs* Well, all's well that ends well. But I'm gonna get Amazon their money back.

Now you know what our Christmas gift is. That's it. The boys will have a few things in their stockings, and the chance to buy BR films for the library, but that was a HUGE chunk o'change. Add on top of that a trip to New Orleans, and we're tapped out for the holiday already.

Read online discussion comments, wrote a recommendation, taught two classes, met w/ two different students re: research paper, revised lecture, wrote up lesson plans for all next week, read two chapters in source reader, wrote up two sets of discussion questions, dealt w/ both work and student email, checked on LIS classes' readings/assignments/due dates (some reading & discussion to do this week and should work on last big assignment).

It's now 4 pm, I'm incredibly stiff and sore from yesterday's gardening, and I'm gonna go home and drink tea and edit ficlets (or else read Yuletide canon). *nods firmly* I can write a quiz and another recommendation at home later this week, also grade a couple of reviews and do a last bit of reading for one of the classes I'm teaching. So yeah. Outta here...

    Monday calling
The weekend was one of those that I like to avoid: busy and cluttered with too many busy-like things. We had a fairly lazy Friday night, which I enjoyed (both boys out of the house until late; a nice dinner alone with HeadBoy, a little pre-Christmas shopping), but then Saturday hit, and we careened from one activity to the next. Then came Sunday, and with HeadBoy down for the count all day, and me at work, it actually kind of worked out.

Two, well, 1.5 days, of work and then Thanksgiving starts. We're having dinner on Thursday with Rev Ann and her hubby, Mike, and their 2 kids, who are adored by my boys, but are a little whiny and at times downright rude so I merely tolerate them (I have plenty of other things to rag on about my boys, but they are never, ever rude to others, except on rare occasions) My MIL called to try to get out of it, to which I smacked her down, even though I couldn't really give a shit if she came or not, but her son wants her there, so...there it is. So she's confirmed. We just have to work out the details of food, and what Rev. Ann is going to eat because she is a veggie.

    *~*

So, [info - personal] shocolate has been out wedding dress shopping with [info - personal] suzanne_taylor, and urged us to post photos of our wedding dresses.

See abigail89 & HeadBoy in all their 1984 glory )

Decided to participate once again in [info] bridge2sickbay. I actually like a couple I wrote yesterday. Theme was song lyrics.

McCoy/Chekov: I wanna hear laugh like you mean it. Collapse into me, tired with joy (Snow Patrol - 'Hands Open') )

McCoy/Author's Choice (Jocelyn): Georgia, Georgia / No peace, no peace I find / Just this old, sweet song / Keeps Georgia on my mind (Ray Charles) )

Author's Choice (McCoy/Kirk) - The broken lights on the freeway left me here alone. I may have lost my way now, haven't forgotten my way home (Broken - Lifehouse) )

Kirk/Chekov - Throw your window wide and taste the April night with me again (David Gray) )

Oh, that's enough torture for now. Huh. I think I ended up writing 7 ficlets, which is astonishing. There's a series of 3 that I want to clean up and make into a proper story.

    Lunchtime! YAY.

Worked in the yard for 3+ hours today; raked (w/ SO's help) 10 bags of leaves, also planted about 100 bulbs (daffodils, crocuses, iris). Am now tired and sore. OTOH, I slept in till almost 9, so I'm less tired than I might be.

Have also talked with my mom, and am about to go start cooking soup and chicken. SO is walking Juno with the neighbors and Scruffy. Was too brain-dead to work on resume etc., but maybe will manage a bit after dinner, and also plan to read for tomorrow's class.

The first two need to be made about 3 days ahead; I'm not doing the pickled peaches for Thanksgiving this year, but I'll make the cranberry relish tomorrow. Not making pumpkin pie this year either although I expect it will be around, just made by someone else.

    PWNED
Finished the pathfinder, both paper and web versions, and submitted 4 hours before deadline. *does happy dance* Only one more major assignment, plus a final exam, for the two LIS classes, if I remember correctly. Will double-check tomorrow. Possibly a minor thing or two as well, not sure.

Also today took SO out to lunch, went to four stores for grocery and other shopping, and made a white-bean-and-greens dish that turned out pretty well (which is good since there's like 3 or 4 more meals' worth!). Watched part of ST:XI during dinner, SO's choice.

Tomorrow: walk Juno (hopefully) and/or do some yard work, work on resume and job apps, cook for the first half of the week, talk to maternal unit, and do some reading for classes.

Other things to do over the next week: start writing holiday letter/cards, make a lot of cranberry bread, possibly bake regular bread, write/edit some fic, work on last big LIS assignment, go to the art museum, cook a lot, clean the house, and do the last course preps for the term. I was really really clever and managed to schedule things so that I don't have any grading of substance to do over Thanksgiving, go me!

    Last CSA of the year
Mostly greens this time: collards, something that's either chard or beet greens, some greens that I can't identify but are clearly for cooking, green cabbage, a small head of broccoli, and cherry tomatoes. Still have last week's collards and beets, too. So - I found a recipe for beans and greens, cooked white beans w/ the greens then cooked in them, with garlic and olive oil. Should be okay and seems easy, which is a plus. Also going to make herb-baked chicken breasts and Russian potato soup, along with cooked radishes (SO is dubious, but willing to try) and cooked beets for me.

We're having Thanksgiving at our neighbors' (J & C), so I'm not responsible for the turkey, yay! SO is supposed to go over later today and find out what they'd like us to bring; he's already volunteered to bring the butternut squash and apple dish, but probably I'll make at least a couple of other things also. Thus I will not do the grocery shopping until after that's been determined. Sometime this week or maybe next weekend, I plan to make cranberry-nut bread for local gift-giving, too.

In the meantime, back to work on the pathfinder. The library catalog was being uncooperative last night; here's hoping it's working right this morning.

    Everybody's working for the weekend...
Or in my case, working on the weekend. We didn't have our usual Friday "date" tonight, i.e. going out for dinner, partly b/c we both have work to do tonight, partly b/c we had to eat out so much last weekend while traveling.

I graded quizzes and reading responses and wrote up the last paper assignment for one class this afternoon; also finished/submitted an LIS assignment, and spent 1+ hour in the library looking up stuff for the other one (due tomorrow). Dictated some drabbles and posted one (link at end).

Juno was not good tonight; our neighbor-across-the-street J. was over talking with SO and brought his dog Luna, and the two dogs were playing pretty well in the back yard. I fed Juno when it was her dinner time, and then gave each dog a biscuit. Juno ate hers immediately, and when Luna didn't and dropped it in some leaves, Juno went after Luna's and there was a brief brawl. SO and J. managed to separate them quickly, but clearly they cannot both be given food in proximity, or else there will have to be very close supervision.

Okay, I have to work on this assignment. It's not conceptually difficult or anything, but substantial. Sigh. Not due till midnight tomorrow, but it would be good to get most of the content worked out tonight and then all the formatting etc. tomorrow - it has to be presented as both a paper flyer and a web page/site.

Have I said lately how glad I will be when this semester is over? All right, here's the drabble:

    Happy Birthday, OdoGoddess!

I report a happy accident of the kind the Muse she loves to arrange: I searched the Thesaurus for a better word than 'unique' for Ms. Odo, and it gave me 'curious' with this string of possible synonyms. I loved them all.

I should've done more work, but...
I finished editing and submitted two fest fics today. Which leaves [info]yuletide and [info]3fan_holidays yet to go, for which I don't have bunnies quite yet (and am still reviewing source material for Yuletide anyhow). So I'm in good shape there, yay! Have some drabbles to work on in the meantime so my commute will be sufficiently occupied.

Did do some LIS work, some reading and beginning on an assignment, but will need to finish that up after dinner and turn it in. The other assignment I'll be working on tomorrow and Saturday, oh yeah. That's a big one - creating a pathfinder aka finding guide, in both paper and online versions. My other task this weekend, Sunday, will be to finalize my resume (and send it to my various recommenders) and see if either of the jobs I was looking at is still open, and write letters if so.

Took Juno to the dog park and also picked up some beer for SO, as he'd been out for a week. It was warm enough that I had the back door propped open this afternoon, and our neighbor dog Scruffy (Juno's best bud/playmate) escaped his own yard twice and came visiting, once even coming upstairs with Juno. I returned him and I think they've located the escape point and fixed it now.

I have salmon casserole in the oven for dinner and it smells yummy already. SO should be home soon...

    good news and hopeful prospects
Here's a quick summary of good news, for Dark of the Moon:
    • My leave-of-absence has been extended until after the new year, and most of that will be with salary!! **happy dance**
    • Making progress on my many late projects; Darkfest and Severus_Shorts finally completed!
    • Working on a few barter commissions for design work that make me feel useful, and are pleasant work. **feels like hope!**
    • Going to the gym almost every day for some kind of (vigorous) workout, and I am sleeping ALOT.
    • I love my critters! just sayin'
    • I've applied for a job, a wonderful fun close-to-home job that is exciting, but a BIG drop in salary. Will interview in December. **crosses fingers**
Tomorrow: dog to groomers, a pedicure for me, and some art museum time, a belated birthday artist's date.

A bit late, but I can now thank [info]alisanne officially for having written "Unveiled" for me in this year's [info]fall_fantasia; and I can also claim authorship of the fic I wrote, which was for her! *g*

Haven't been able to get much done today, as I unexpectedly ended up having a lunch meeting w/ a grad student, and then there was a dept. meeting (which thankfully did not go as long as usual). So now I'm headed for home. Need to slam through edits so I can submit fest fics, also work on LIS reading and assignments (one due tomorrow, the other now postponed till Saturday, huzzah). I did manage to get next Monday's classes prepped in between meetings, so Friday I can spend time at the library here to check on some things for the Saturday assignment.

Even though I haven't been documenting it, I have been writing every day. Mostly in big spurts, like Saturday and Sunday. Not only did I write that [info] stxi_sinfest thing (thanks, y'all, for reading), but wandered into [info] bridge2sickbay that evening to write three ficlets.

Odd how those fics I write the fastest seem to get the best response, whereas fics I take time to think about and write carefully get little to no attention. Lesson: Write fast and don't worry about it? Go with the gut instinct? I dunno.

Here are the ones that worked out for this week. I promise they're short:

I have the 'Star Trek' blu-ray set from Best Buy in my hot little hands. The pins that come in the 'gift' set are really nice! I thought they were going to be these cheapie things, but they're not. Everyone's getting one in their Christmas stocking. Now all I need is for my Blu-ray player to arrive from amazon and we'll be ready to punch it.

OMG! I realized this morning that Thanksgiving is NEXT WEEK. Holy cow! When did that happen? I am SO unprepared for the holidays. And I am NOT going to do Black Friday. Nope. Not me. I am going to sleep in. We're buying our TV this week; it's on sale, and that's that.
