Wow. Just wow. This is one the best HP fics I've ever read. Beautifully crafted; you have a great way with imagery and detail. You know, I can tell that I'm really enjoying something when I read every word carefully and keep going back to re-read a paragraph again just to savour how good it is. That was exactly how I felt about your fic.
I have to admit that I've kept avoiding "The White Road" in spite of all the recs because I generally dislike portrayals of afterlife in fiction. It's just too jarring for my worldview to imagine even fictional characters existing in a place outside of their flesh and blood reality. Funny that, since I prefer fantasy world setting to a more realistic one ... and still find it downright emotionally distressing to consider an existence beyond life. Needless to say I couldn't stand the ending of The Return of the King :D You either live or die and that's the end of it (for me, anyway). Of course, I was shaken by Deathly Hallows because of this (well, besides the dramatic drop of quality of storytelling). Its therapeutic approach to death, its glorification of it, Harry's willing surrender of his life, and all the "pity the living" drivel just didn't sit right with me.
Anyway, with your story, you managed to not only made me willingly read about afterlife but also enjoy it immensely. You filled in the glaring blanks in the DH narrative and offered an explanation for Harry's near-death experience.
Lily is one of those insufficiently developed characters which you can take either way - exalt her or damn her, and I'm glad you took the middle ground and made her human. I loved the idea of her growing addicted to the Harry and Snape reality show. I still can't help but feel slightly creeped out to imagine her existing past her life but I can certainly identify with her infatuation with Snape and Harry's struggles - same thing happened to me in the case of your fic! ;)
I adore your portrayal of Snape, a wonderful mix of passion and repression. And you made him dark and difficult, but still a perfect match for Harry. Good job!
Oh yes, and poor Tonks, I laughed at Sirius's WTF at her and Lupin. Nice touch about her and Regulus. At least in death she might find someone she won't have to nag into loving her. I chuckled at your James-Sirius-Lupin-Tonks-Regulus conga line. God, those people are all so damaged :) One thing I have to give JKR kudos for is creating this completely messed up generation (and killing them all off only to have Harry re-enact his parents life in a completely healthy way ... yeah ... well, suffice to say I certainly like your version better!)
The last HP book has made me quite allergic to Dumbledore's twinkley-eyed machinations and I like his place in your story - a vaguely annoying, unpredictable, yet in a way helpful presence.
And last but not least, several lines made me just plain LOL, like Lupin's "Harry's a decent chap, but he does have a tendency to go overboard" --- so good job with humor, too! I mean, great job an all accounts, it was an awesome ride - so thanks!
