Fic: The White Road
Title: The White Road
Author: [info]perverse_idyll
Giftee: [info]florahart
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: 45,044
Pairing: Snape/Harry, also Lily/Snape in a totally unconsummated sense, Lily/James
Warnings: Hettishness but no outright heterosex, voyeurism, accidental incestuous overtones, a bloody moment. I'm sure, in some universe, this is epilogue compliant.
Disclaimer: Is not, never was, never will be, mine
Summary: One day, comfortably set up in the afterlife, Lily Evans Potter switches on the telly and gets hooked on the Harry Potter show.
A/N: So, this was supposed to be short and cracky. The Muse apparently had other plans. Dear Flora, I truly did start out with your requests in mind, but the fic wandered far afield. I hope you enjoy where it ultimately ended up. Thanks to L for encouraging me to change horses midstream and for urging me to sing, R for reading the early fragments and loving them. The mods have been unbelievably kind about my deadline panic. Absolutely every single mistake here is of my own making.

Marvelous work. I like how it's told from Lily's point of view as she is watching the television. Well done with this!~Sophia

Hi, I see this and will be back to read it later in the day because I really have to finish my other fic that is (badly, badly) overdue first and it is thisclose.

Also, this will serve as a good reward.

Also also, it is unlikely I mind the wandering far afield. :D

My gosh, this was exquisite. I loved the way it picked up so many of canon's dropped stitches -- Snape and Lily flying and, especially, little Tom. The length felt really right for Lily's gradual changes of heart; I loved when she couldn't bear to watch alone so she grabbed the baby for company.

Marvelous work!

dead, she's the realest Lily ever

Wow. Simply wow. I can't say everything this deserves at this point because I haven't stopped crying yet only just finished it, and I have to let all the million billion awesome things about this fic swirl around in dizzy happy confusion a while longer.

I love the way this fic brings together some of the weakest strands of canon - how Lily spurned teenage Severus in her complacent egocentrism and Gryffindor cliqueishness; what salvation existed for crippled-baby!Tom in King's Cross; how easily Dumbledore (among others) meddles from beyond the Veil; and not least, how hurt and even outraged so many readers were by the shallowness of DH's ending. I love the thought and reconciliation in this fic.

I didn't love the way the archive seems to have garbled so much of the punctuation - it's probably my Firefox, but it's done this with no other snarry_holidays fic, so obviously something wasn't uploaded right. But no matter, I read avidly even having to mentally work out how half the sentences were meant to read, if dashes or ellipses and first letters of words had been in place. It was that good. :D But I'll look forward to reading it again in corrected format before commenting more!

Favorite writing: When Lily's seen that Snape and Harry became lovers, and has just now been watching Snape as he was brought into St. Mungo's, where Ron and Hermione finally dragged Harry away from holding his hand for "three days straight."

She admits that she knows things she shouldn't and that some of them are things she will never give up.

But other kinds of knowledge break her heart. There are moments of privacy she wishes she could return untouched, and this, for some reason, is one of them: the way Sev holds his own hand when Harry's not there.

I love this Lily. She combines all the good and bad we see of her in canon: both snooping and sentimental, thoughtless and kind, greedy and callow but also sweet. I love how she takes up smoking again in her irritability, careless of the baby in her arms. She's as much the product of a working-class community as Snape, it seems! Here in the afterlife, Lily's finally growing, and learning to let go of those she can't own or didn't take care of - aided by the unstoppable meddling of Albus, of course (lol, would that ever change? Though it seems at the end, even Albus has had to also turn loose of Severus).

I love you, anonymous author (mpreg offspring of the Grinch and Ebeneezer Scrooge *g*), for writing with such courage and tenderness, for seeking honest resolution, for being unafraid (unlike the canon author) to confront the bad in each character with the good, and help them grow into a greater maturity. This makes them so much more real, more meaningful as characters. It's this kind of fic that completes what we hope for in canon. Thank you so much for going so far past short and cracky!

Absolutely fucking AMAZING. This is story-telling in perfection. I'm in awe at your talent.

From Petunia's slippers to baby Tom's scabby head, your detailed and powerful descriptions are amazing. The surrender of the greasy unicorn is an image that'll stay with me forever. Stunningly beautiful!

To tell the story from Lily's afterlife POV - what an amazing idea. Her slow change, her final acceptance and her regret - I'd never have thought that I could like Lily Evans, but you made me. The scene when she listens to Snape's heart and doesn't see his happiness, this is so vivid, so real, so much more understandable than her canon pettiness.

It's fantastic how you discuss canon on a meta level here, never forgetting your focus on telling a story, though. With Harry's cold, stenciled life with Ginny you show exactly why the schematic happy ending with kids etc. is so horrible. I had to laugh out loud when Lily mistakes Harry and Ginny for James and herself.

The voyeurism, your sex scenes in general - so HOT, so full of passion. And the tenderness. Observations like that Harry likes to hold Snape's limp cock touched me, as did the scene when Snape holds his own hand. I loved how Snape saved Harry, with so much passion and despair.

I stop my incoherent babbling here. I have so much love for your story.

By god this was magnificent. Just wow. Beautifully told, the heart break, the humour. You pulled my heart string, and I adored Lily. Bloody hell! Best fic I’ve read in a hell of a long time.

You’ve made me wordless.

I love this fic and thank you so much for writing it!

Wow. That was all kinds of amazing. Lily just lived here, no pun intended. Finally, we get to see the girl who called James Potter an arrogant little toerag, then fell in love with him anyway, not the idealised middle-class (and practically middle-aged) mother of the films. Because this is how Lily would be. She died absurdly young, and that's how she'd have stayed.

And you know what? Before reading this I would have said I didn't even want to see her.

I'm still not sure I like her. But bloody hell, do I feel privileged to have met her in this fic.

All your characterisations were spot-on, and the sex scenes were sublime. I loved your Snape - so passionate, and so fearful. And the way you juxtaposed Harry's two possible futures - brilliant. You made it crystal clear that Ginny was wrong for Harry, whilst keeping her a sympathetic character *applauds* And the life that Severus and Harry had together... so wonderful in its imperfections.

And god, you even managed some incredible moments of humour!

*salutes you*

I am in awe. Speechless. That was absolutely epic. The concept-Lily watching Harry's alternate lives playing out on TV, her own memories (dear lord that scene with Severus was breathtaking!), the individual lines-I quite adored Severus's line about owning the bank!, Severus kneeling and Harry dropping to his knees-just beautiful! And Tom-what an amazing thing to have Lily caring for him. I'm really failing here to convey my love for this fic. I adored every word. Every single word. Brilliant.

Very well done. Lily's love for Harry had me in tears at time, how she would call him her baby, her young man. And I especially liked her reaction to the glimpse of Harry's torture and how it helped reconcile her feelings on the relationship. And, lol, nice to see Dumbledore & the boyfriend still making mischief even in death.

This was...utterly amazing. And here's the thing: it's just past 5:00 a.m., and I've been awake, reading this, since 1:00 a.m. because it was just that wonderful, and now I have to start getting ready to go to work, so my only comments at the moment will be the expected "fantastic Snape & Lily interaction" and "perfect voices" and "oh-so-hot sex and oh-so-right relationship between Snape and Harry" and "yay!" but there will be more, later...if not right away, then after the reveals when I add this story to my recs page. Excellent work, mystery author.

Wow, this story is amazingly fantastic. I love this and I am going to read everything you've written as soon as I know who you are. Just so you know. You did so more than just "fix" the ending with this story. I can see from your summary how you might have started out with a cracky sort of premise, but the world and characters you created or fleshed out really couldn't stay there. Your Severus and Lily and Harry were sublime. I loved Lily's peeking into Harry's possible futures and coming to the conclusions she did. I'm sure the reunion they will all have someday will be interesting, as well. (Poor Eileen!) I could go on and on, but if I do it will just degenerate into babbling, so I think I'll leave it here. Thanks for the wonderful read!

Stunning stuff, this.
You got the just-out-of-her-teens Lily just right for me; she had that growing up and maturing that she'd never got the chance to do alive.
I loved what you did with James and Sirius, but especially with Lily and Severus as children.
The different futures were great, and Lily looking after baby!Tom worked very well.

stunning, absolutely stunning. You've caught so much of the characters, here, and really brought them to life in a way that takes no prisoners. The treatment of the baby-soul fragment of Tom, especially, is amazing and ingenious.
Definitely one to come back to reread often.

This was amazing. Just stunning. I was as riveted as Lily watching each scene unfold. What an original concept. Snape's characterizations was perfect. Harry as well. And Lily, I'd really never considered her as anything more than Harry's mum. I think I need to reconsider.

Extremely well done!
