The boy was in the corner of the room, defiance in every line of his tightly held body as he strained against the magic that held him in place on the cold stone of the floor. On his knees.

Severus smirked and took another long sip of his Firewhisky, not allowing his expression to change even as the alcohol burned a path down to his stomach and ate like acid at the lining of it. He took a moment to enjoy the sight of the nubile young body writhing on the floor before he sat back with a sigh.

"Are you prepared to concede defeat, Potter?" he asked, voice bland.

"Never!"

"Mmm, so be it."

Severus went back to his amused—and rather unprofessionally intrigued—contemplation of the straining, heaving young man as he fought against his magical cage. After another ten minutes of struggling, Severus began to lose patience with the situation and offered, "You can't fight magic with brute strength, Potter. Not that you possess brute strength, but still…"

"Oh, shut up, Snape," Potter snarled back, redoubling his efforts in a show of strength that was… well. As he made absolutely no head-way, it was really feeble, at best. Which Severus was happy to point out.

"Put a bit more muscle into it, Potter. Really, one would hope the Hero of the Light, the Boy Who Lived, the," he gestured with his glass and incredibly none of the liquid so much as sloshed—magic really was a wonderful thing, "Saviour of Us All would have a bit more stamina. I'm disappointed, to be perfectly honest. However will you defeat the Dark Lord if you cannot escape a simple caging spell?"

"Fu—"

"Ah?" Severus said, leaning forward in his seat. "What was that you were about to say, Potter? Not another example of your atrocious disregard for the respect due a full Professor at the premiere institute of magic in all of Great Britain and perhaps even the world, was it?"

Sitting back on his heels, Potter wiped a hand over his sweating brow and scowled darkly, muttering something under his breath—it sounded vaguely like he might be questioning the qualifications to become a full Professor—before he grimaced in what was obviously supposed to be a saccharine smile and said, "Of course not. I was simply about to remark on the temperature of the dungeons in the castle."

"Mmm. Well, do continue, Potter. Also, feel free to disregard every bit of advice I've offered this evening as I obviously do not have the faintest idea how to go about deconstructing caging spells."

Potter looked up at him incredulously and said, "What advice? You've done nothing but sit there and snark at me all night!"

Severus tsked. "All night, Potter? Surely you exaggerate. Why, we've only been here for three quarters of an hour. And if you'll think on it, you'll realise that I've given you plenty of advice."

"Well, then, I must have missed it amid all the insults you've been flinging at me all night! Excuse me, for the past three quarters of an hour." The sarcasm nearly dripped from the boy's voice then. "So, tell me again? Unless you want to be here for another three quarters of an hour."

Severus lifted his brows, very nearly insulted at the absolute clumsiness of Potter's attempt at blackmail. But then, he remembered the boy was naturally limited and sighed, relaxing back in his seat. "Do inform me when you're ready to admit defeat."

"Snape… how long have you known me?"

"Far too long."

"Exactly. And what, in all the time you've known me, has led you to the conclusion that I would ever admit defeat? I mean, seriously. If I was one to do that, Voldemort—"

"Potter!"

"Oh, yeah, right. Sorry. Although, you know how I feel about what you call him, so that won't work. And the whole He-Who-Must-Not-business is simply embarrassing. It's a name, for fu—uh, for pity's sake."

"I'm certain you had a point to make?"

"Umm… yeah." Potter paused for a moment, obviously sending out a mental search party for his missing thought—causing Severus to roll his eyes—then perked up when he found it. "What I was saying is that if I was going to just give up when things get hard, Voldemort would have captured the Philosopher's Stone back in first year."

"Yes, a shame he wasn't able to complete that task."

"Oh, shut it."

"Attitude, Potter."

"My attitude will be greatly brightened when I get free of this…stupid…cage!"

Severus sighed and went back to his Firewhisky, silently bemoaning the loss of another night that could have been spent in the contemplation of his new Potions Quarterly. Most of it was utter tripe written by second-rate Potions makers, but at least it was interesting tripe. This evening was shaping up to be yet another exercise in stubbornness as employed by Harry Potter.

Why had he given in to Albus again? Surely he should have learned his lesson after their failed Occlumency sessions. But no, apparently not, because when the Headmaster had privately requested that he find time in his schedule to give Potter lessons in effective avoidance of death and/or torture by Death Eaters—ostensibly private "tutoring" in Defence Against the Dark Arts—Severus had only refused for three days. He was still officially sulking, but his attempts to deny Albus had died a sad death in the face of the old man's disappointed moping.

Really, a moping Albus Dumbledore was more frightening than the full wrath of the Dark Lord. That was Severus' official position, at any rate.

Drawn from his musings by the sound of Potter growling furiously at the caging spell that glimmered around him, Severus shook his head. "You know, Potter, I really do have better things to do than sit here and watch you make a fool of yourself."

"What’s that?" Potter asked, panting heavily. "Did I interrupt a hot date?" The boy had the absolute gall to snicker after saying that.

Severus narrowed his eyes. "Potter, I didn't know you cared. Jealous?"

"Oh my God, you did?"

"Oh, yes. I had a date with one of the most passionate people of my acquaintance. A hot, steaming night awaited me, only to be doused by the knowledge that I was required, once again, to attempt to force, coerce, or otherwise entice you into an understanding of the simplest of magical principles. To my utter dismay." No need for the boy to know that the most passion he was anticipating was a good round with his left hand as he perused that little book at the back of the bottom drawer of his night stand.

"If you would just tell me how…"

"Potter, you are truly the laziest person I've ever encountered. So much power at your disposal and you're content to let everyone else do the thinking for you. Tell me, does Granger have to constantly remind you how to spell your own name?"

"Would you just… shut… up… if you… won't… help?!" Potter's hair and t-shirt stuck to his sweaty skin and his muscles stood out in relief as he gave one huge heave against the magical barrier encapsulating him.

Severus dropped his shoulders and pressed the bridge of his nose between his thumb and forefinger as he realised that Potter was simply incapable of reaching first for the magical core that lived inside him when physical action was a possibility. He stood and walked over to where Potter was attempting to smash through the shimmering barrier and drew his wand.

As he concentrated on the spiral of power that held the cage intact around Potter, however, he missed the fact that the boy had stopped his struggles as a strange look of absorption washed over his features. Just as Severus opened his mouth to speak the countercurse to the caging spell, Potter yelled something arcane sounding. A strange glow began to sparkle around the cage, lighting it up into a solid-looking mass. The glow leapt from the cage to the tip of Severus' wand, and he was instantly jerked inside the cage with Potter, his wand falling with a clatter outside of it.

"What did you do, Potter?" Severus asked, his voice low and furious.

"I tried to use wandless magic! That's what you were telling me to do, right?!"

Severus drew a deep breath through his nose and turned on Potter. "Did it somehow escape your notice that I had my wand drawn? What spell was that you used? You idiot! I was just about to free you!" Severus' hands were clenched into fists at his side to keep himself from reaching out and fetching the boy a well-deserved slap around the head.

Potter stood there with his mouth gaping—his standard expression, really—and flailed his hands for a moment before he said, "How the hell was I supposed to know you were about to help me?! After all, it's not like you make a habit of it!"

"Not make a habit of helping you?! You little whelp! That's all I seem to ever do! Not by choice, mind you."

"Oh, yeah, right. You've helped me so very much. Well, guess what, Snape?! I don't need your help! If you hadn't interfered just now, I'd be out of here!"

A firm shove in his back sent Severus stumbling toward Potter. Whirling with a growl, he saw that the cage was slowly beginning to close in on them. "What the hell did you do, Potter?"

"I used a releasing spell. Umm, I think."

"You think?! Oh, Merlin and all the ancients preserve us. Potter had a thought. What a completely frightening idea. Revolting, even."

Potter rolled his eyes and threw his hands in the air, backing up toward the farthest point he could—less than three feet—and shook his head. "I can't win with you, Snape. If I do what you want, you snipe at me, if I don't, you snipe at me. So… what do you want from me?"

"To begin with, I'd like to know the exact spell you used."

Potter licked his lips and shifted his gaze away before he said, "Liberatius. Umm, I think. I was trying to decide between that and eximus. So one of those. Umm."

"Liberatius or eximus, Potter? Have you no concept of the principles of magic? What, did you just pluck a Latin translation—a poor translation, at that—from thin air and fling it about with a bit of power behind it?"

"You were so smart five minutes ago. Why don't you do something worthwhile and get us out of here?"

"Potter, you have spent five and a half years at Hogwarts. Have you learned nothing in all that time?"

"Obviously not. Maybe I should just lie down and drool now, since I'm so incredibly stupid."

"Oh, stop pouting, boy. I can't undo what you've done because your spell, or at least, your attempt at a spell, changed the nature of the spell I used to create the cage. It is no longer a simple containment charm and is, in effect, an actual cage. One that, it appears, is steadily shrinking."

"I know. About the shrinking, I mean. I noticed it right before it pushed you forward. What, umm, what are we going to do about that? I mean, eventually it's going to get so small that we won't fit. Will it just… squish us?"

"Squish? Who taught you your vocabulary, Potter?"

Potter sighed again and shrugged, not bothering to speak as he looked down and scuffed his toe against the floor.

"You can stop worrying, Potter. It was our magic that created this cage; an unusual combination, to be sure, but it can't actually hurt us." He hoped. No need to tell Potter he wasn't entirely sure, though. He certainly did not want to spend the rest of the time he was trapped here with a hysterical teen. No matter how said teen's body had filled out during the past year.

Severus cut that train of thought off right quickly. This was no time to distract himself with thoughts of an inappropriate nature.

Looking down, he stepped as close to the edge of the cage as he could before he held out his hand and closed his eyes, concentrating hard on summoning his wand. The cage glowed brightly enough that he could see it behind his closed lids, but otherwise nothing happened.

"I think it's dampening your magic, sir."

"You don't say?" Severus murmured. The cage shrank again, pushing Severus backward into Potter, who let out an "oomph" as they crashed against one another. Severus' skin literally crawled with the sensation of having someone that close to his unprotected back, so he quickly spun around just as the cage pressed in around them, preventing any further movement.

Potter swallowed audibly before whispering, "You're sure it can't hurt us?"

"Takes for what?"

"For you to undo what you've done so that we can leave."

"Oh."

Severus rolled his eyes and muttered, "Deliver me from imbeciles."

For the next several minutes, Potter attempted a wide variety of spells, all to no avail. When he tried a desperate, "Alohamora!", Severus growled and told him to shut up. "Someone will be long shortly, I imagine. If nothing else, your little fan club will surely wonder where you are."

"Not really. They know I'm down here. And, umm, I told them what we're doing, so they realise it might be a while."

"Lovely. Your unfortunate sense of honesty will be the death of me. Literally, it seems."

"I thought you said—"

"It was a turn of phrase, Potter. Do allow me my moment of melodrama; I've suffered through yours enough times."

At that, they settled into a long silence, which was broken when Potter shifted against Severus and whispered an apology. When he did it again moments later, Severus grabbed his waist and said, "Stand still. Your fidgeting is less than amusing." He didn't add that the close confines plus their positioning was giving him thoughts of a rather unprofessional nature.

Potter sighed, the warm air blowing against Severus' neck in a distinctly arousing manner, and said, "Sorry. I just… my feet are hurting and I swear my knees are falling asleep."

Severus sternly steered his mind away from visions of Potter's knees—the memory of the boy struggling against the cage earlier was playing havoc with his libido—and concentrated instead on focusing his magic for another attempt at a wandless spell. Again, the cage merely glowed brightly for a moment before settling around them a bit more firmly.

A light pinch on his backside made Severus jerk against Potter. "What the hell?!?"

Potter pulled back from Severus as much as he was able and said, "What?! I didn't do anything!"

"I know you didn't—" He bit off the rest of what he'd been about to say and merely said, "The cage. It's getting… fresh with me."

Potter's whole body went lax with surprise before he began shaking against Severus.

"Oh, just let it out, Potter. I know you're laughing; you may as well enjoy it."

"I… don't… mean," Potter was wheezing in his efforts to choke off his laughter, "to… laugh. It's just… the cage is getting fresh with you?!" Loud guffaws overwhelmed the little brat, and Severus counted each with a mind toward recompense at a later date. When they were out of this situation and he could bend the boy over—no, no. "What are you—" Severus was cut off mid-hiss by the cage humming against the nape of his neck. Electricity sizzled down his spine before his buttocks began to be smoothly, sensually, massaged.
