(Interview) Snarry Games Interview with the Goddess djin7 herself!
Original poster: reddwarfer
Hello, Leila here. Since you lovely people let me win by a bloody landslide, I was able to track down our boss and make her answer all sorts of questions. :D
Please, enjoy the interview!
1. What was the inspiration for creating this event?
Several things, actually. The need to revitalise the Snarry Ship after the events of HBP and the closure of the Detention website. I was lucky enough to have taken part in both the merry_smutmas fest and the naughty_newyear, and I really enjoyed it. But I found the stress of writing for one person as a gift to be too much. So when I saw this type of format community challenge in the steelandsparks comm, I thought that this idea seems more my style, and less stressful, while still being fun. I asked permission to adapt the idea, and the snarry_olympics was born.
Interviewer's note: And she forgot to add...lots and lots of wibbling in between.
2. Why do you want to emphasise team work?
Because I hate wank. Especially ship wank. And I wanted to feel some community love and togetherness, and figured that this type of challenge could open many doors to that kind of feeling. *crosses fingers, breaks into a rousing rendition of ‘Why Can’t We Be Friends’ *
Interviewer's note: Wank is for cocks and cunts not dicks and twats.
3. What is it about Snarry?
Hah. I can’t really explain it. I’ve tried before and failed, miserably. I can tell you this: Snarry was a natural progression that started from reading HP gen to het, het to slash, H/D to SS/HP. It’s as if at each step, the stories become more complex and masterful, and one step further away from canon, while still trying to stay true to it. Snarry, to me, is like the pinnacle or apex, as it were, of Harry Potter slash fanfiction.
Interviewer's note: Snarry=Love.
4. What do you look for in a story?
Harry Potter.
Interviewer's note: It's all about Snape. DUH!
I rarely read a story that doesn’t include him in some major capacity. I like action and adventure, mystery and suspense, romance and plot. Throw in a little porn, and I’m as happy as a clam. I like angst and drama, but I’m not overly fond of ‘dark!fic’. I can only handle small doses, almost like if I get too much, there’ll be a dark quickening, and that’s bad for everybody. I’m here to have fun and be entertained. Not really wanting to spend overmuch time being depressed or distressed.
Interviewer's note: In other words, she wants me to write more! I know. See the pressure she puts on me? I'm only one girl. This is my real reason for doing this event. Spread the joy of trying to satisfy her insatiable need for good writing. *swoons*
5. What are your top five favourite fan-fics?
Touché. But I’m going to foil your dastardly plan by instead citing my ‘most often read’ HP stories, because they are like comfort food, and you can never go wrong. If these stories have ‘hit counters’, I’ve screwed with them. *g *
Paradigm of Uncertainty Series by Lori Summers (madlori)
Hiding Under Ninth Earth Series by I Got Tired Of Waiting (igtow)
The Chocolate Series by Diannan (ladyflowdi)
The Dream Verse Series by Willy Sunny (willysunny)
A Thousand Beautiful Things by Duinn Fionn (geoviki)
and one non HP, ahaha. If everyone else gets to do it, so do I!
Roy Mustang, Sex Ed Teacher, and Better Living Through Alchemy (FullMetal Alchemist) by Sky Dark sky_dark.
Interviewer's note: Fuck yeah, baby.
Heh. It occurs to me as I write these, that each one is a romance story, yet each contains at least one brutal scene of perfectly crafted and exquisite angst. The kind of scene that stays in your head for weeks, making your brows furrow and stomach clench in pain. Awesome.
6. You are a top-shelf beta in our fandom. How do you enjoy the process?
Heh. I highly doubt I’d use the term ‘Top-Shelf’, however, I enjoy the beta process most of the time, especially as I get to see the story or chapter *first * (Spoiler!whore). I have some strengths (storyline and plot continuity, SPAG) and some weaknesses (my struggle with tense and passive verbage is only slightly less than that of Prometheus in his chains), so it rather depends on that. I have a steady gig with a few authors who seem to like my style.
Interviewer's note: This is not a paid testimonial. She rocks! But this is not an advert. Hands off my beta! She's mine! I already have to share her with other peoples.
7. How important are betas to the writing process?
To me? Very. The few stories I’ve written, I have to say that my betas were the only thing keeping me from taking a long walk off a short cliff while holding an anvil. Or, alternatively, from sending it all to the ‘Recycle bin’.
Interviewer's note: *nods* Betas, good ones at least, rock.
8. What do you hope the snarry_olympics does for fandom/this ship?
Revitalise, rejuvenate. More community spirit. We took some big hits this year, we all know what I’m talking about, and it also helped to cause a distressing trend of popular Snarry writers to abandon ship, for other waters. It may have already been happening, but the terrible wank that went on, and HBP probably did a lot to make their eye turn to other fandoms. I don’t expect people to stay in the same place all the time, but when 5 out of your 10 favourite writers stop writing your ship, or disappear from fandom, it is rather depressing. The Games will, hopefully, highlight some of the best this ship can still offer, and perhaps even vault a lesser known author into the spotlight to help ease the hurts.
Interviewer's note: Amen, baby.
9. You make many posts celebrating writers and artists. Why is this important to you?
I’d been reading Harry Potter fan-fiction for over a year via websites and mailing lists when I discovered Livejournal. I lurked here, reading and reviewing, without an account, for nearly 6 months, and was finally persuaded to get one. Less than a week after logging on for the first time (over a year ago), someone announced “Fanfiction Author Appreciation Week”. Well, hell. How could I possibly resist? They are the reason I came, after all. The week (ha, ha) became a month, then two, and you get my drift, yeah? I started doing FanArtists after I had finished with my original list of over 80 authors, and am sorely remiss in doing one lately. But I have a list! And it gets longer every time I find an artist that is incredible. Oh, god. There are so many. It’s important for them to know how much their hard work is appreciated, no? I review, but they get lost in the shuffle, and I want them, authors and artists alike, to know just how much joy and entertainment they have given me.
Interviewer's note: *hem hem*
10. Any plans for writing in the future?
Perhaps. I’m a fan, foremost, and I have a busy beta schedule, and now there are the Games, but I have bunnies. Have bunnies, will write.
Interviewer's note: Write more Roy/Ed. Now!
11. Are you excited? About the Games?
Hell, yeah!
Interviewer's note: Um…not much to add here…ditto?
12. Who is your favourite character?
Harry Potter. It’s all about him in the end. I’ve always had a thing for heroes.
Interviewer's note: Snape
13. So, Harry's obviously prime material for the uke. I mean, he's short, he's thin, he's a bit girly, and he's got those pouty lips. Why do you put him in the role of the seme?
*stabs!*He’s only uke-like while he is young and (somewhat) defenseless. Give him time, and he will be as powerful as the Dark Lord, Trelawney says so. *nods *
Interviewer's note: *snorfle*
14. Snape: Sex God or Sex Goof?
Depends on whose story I’m reading. Hee. Fanon!SexGod!Snape is always fun, fun, fun.
Interviewer's note: Snape cock!
15. Harry: Mighty Man Meat of Doom or Itty Bitty Teeny Weenie?
Dude. He’s the HERO. They are never short on Important Physical Attributes. It’s the law.
Interviewer's note: Can anyone say Napoleon Complex?
16. If you had to choose a song that epitomises the ship, which would it be?
I don’t really have a Snarry soundtrack. They defy that.
Interviewer's note: It's more that there are few songs that explicitly state: Potter, I hate you, but do continue to suck my cock.
17. Snape's nose: Is it a benefit or nuisance in the sack?
I wouldn’t know, I’ve never had his nose. *raises eyebrow *
Interviewer's note: *absently polishes fingernails*
18. Romance or Angst?
I am unbiased! Damn you! I love both, honestly. But as I said earlier, to me, enjoyment and entertainment rarely come in the form of despair or unhappiness.
Interviewer's note: HA!
19. Do you realise how much your Leila adores you? Even if she likes to torture you vicariously through Harry?
Yet she has no problem mocking me in public. Tell her to leave MY HARRY ALONE! *g *
Interviewer's note: I'll treat Harry just fine. *smirks*
