Your Name (lj and/or Penname): rakina
Your Team: Postwar! Go Team Postwar!!! (sorry, got excited there)
1. What made you decide to join the 2007 Snarry Games?
I was so honoured and excited to be asked to participate again that I did an embarrassing amount of fangirly squeeing for a day or two. Then I put my slightly more sensible head on and started to plot. Because you can never have too much Snarry, and you made me do it!
2. Which Harry Potter character is your favourite to write? To read? (any POV)
Oh, Merlin. How long is a piece of string? 'Snape' is the obvious answer, probably the most popular one in fandom. He is so variable, still so mysterious in canon and therefore open to much interpretation. As a rule JKR doesn't show the adult characters' interactions with each other (except the fascinating Chapter 2 of HBP) and so we have a lot of leeway. But then, there are many others. Harry is pretty multi-faceted. He has changed throughout the books and can be written in many ways. But apart from the main pairing, I love writing Trelawney, Hagrid and Lupin. Oh, and RonandHermione, and Draco at times. To sum up, I'd say I love to explore the Potterverse, and it's an endless arena to have fun in.
3.What brought Snarry to your attention? Was it a specific event/fic/picture?
It was Cybele's 'If You Are Prepared'. Not sure now where I found it - perhaps on a recs list - but once I read it there was no other pairing possible for my OTP. I do read and write other ships at times, notably Snupin, but Snarry still has that added dimension that makes me shiver, and that story is what started it all off for me. It's that excitement that keeps me writing.
4. What is your stance on "Quidditch-toned thighs"?
Straddling them would be nice! Sorry. Erm. Well. This is a can of worms. And that isn't necessarily the worst example of fandom cliche (obsidian eyes, anyone? and yes, I've written that too). Basically, if it's a one-off I don't mind (reading it repeatedly in the same fic would be a bit off-putting). To me, it's whether the plot moves you, rather than the small elements, that's important. And it's hard to define what makes one fic more readable than another. Pointing out cliches is too simplistic. Reader preferences are personal to the reader, one style of fic suits one person and not another. It's a wide church, room for everything from mega-fluffy Fluff to very doom-laden Angst. As long as a piece is well-written, with not too many grammar glitches and typos, and a good plot, I can cope with the thighs!
5. Your own fanfiction (any fandom, any pairing): What do you think is your most underappreciated work? What do you think is your best work? Would you link them here for us?
Eep! Where to begin?
Underappreciated? Probably my Snupin chaptered fic 'You Can't Erase the Poet's Fate'. I feel because of its subject matter (Lupin's dying/death) it's little read. And I know it's one of my best works.
Best work? Oh my. I recently re-read (and still like) 'Requiem For A Death Eater'.
I notice both of these are very angsty, as is 'If You Are Prepared'. I really think Angsty fics stay with you longer, and thus my humorous submission to this Games probably will disappear without trace. Meh.
6. In your opinion, will Severus Snape turn out to be 'Dumbledore's Man' in Book 7, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows?
Definitely. 100%. No other plot makes any sense at all in my opinion. I just hope he survives the process, and Harry learns just what he owes to Severus. I was pleased to read John Granger's opinion that Severus is the real hero of the Potter books, it's one I also believe. Snape had to go to Voldemort and lie to him every time, and every time he was facing death if he was discovered. More Gryffindor than the Gryffs!
7. What do you think of podcasting, the newest fad in fandom? Would you like to hear one of your own stories, or one of your favourites voiced via .mp3?
Yes, I'd love that. I have a text-to-speech program on my computer and most of my reading is done by this means. It's great!
8. What pairing have you never written that you would love to try one day? (Any fandom)
Remarry. I keep threatening to write it. I really would like to have a go. It would be a strange distortion of Snarry, with Remus standing in for Snape. There's potential there, and now all I need is the right bunny.
9. What's your favourite kink to read?
Does rimming count as a kink? I wouldn't class it as such, but I love reading it. But for a real, major kink? D/S. I love seeing the rather formalised relationship of Dom/Sub. With Severus as the Dom, of course *shivers*
10. How do you feel about participating in this year's Snarry Games?
I think I blathered about that in the first question. I feel very honoured to be taking part in this with such great writers on both teams – and yeah, the Wartime bunch is pretty awesome too.
The comm has so many watchers and members it's a way to hopefully attract new readers to my own style of writing. We're all very different in the way we approach the pairing and so it's also a great chance to read fics by accomplished writers whose styles I'm not familiar with. Now I just need a month off to read them all!
Thank you, rakina!
Stay tuned for more crack!art tomorrow!
