TEAM MEMBER INTERVIEW #25 -- Pervart!
Original poster: snarrymod
Your Name (and lj name if different): pervart
Your Games Team: Team Angst teamangst_art
1. What made you decide on Team Angst/Team Romance?
Most of my art is non-con, bondage, or some other dark and sexy thing,so Team Angst seemed more like home to me. Secretly, I find most bondage to be romantic, but fluff seems out of character for this, my otp. Angst is also more of a challenge, since it can be interpreted through composition or depiction of conflict, pain, or dark subjects(delicious!)
2. Which HP character is your favourite to create in art?
Snarry is my otp, so most of my fanart is of them. I like Severus because his character has so many levels, and I love to watch Harry suffer. For gen, I kink on Harry in cupboards. But 98% of my art is porn, ergo the secret porn journal. Slash will always be my favorite fanart subgenre. I seriously hate Draco. I can only stand Sirius when he's deranged and punishing Harry for not being James ... and I can only stand Remus when he's punishing Harry for not being Sirius.
3. Has your experience in fandom changed the way you do art? How?
I have an art degree but never did much illustration, so getting into fanart certainly creased the quality and quantity of my drawings. Making HP icons for livejournal back in 2002 is what sharpened my Photoshop skills enough to get a promotion at work, so I'll always credit this fandom for the practice it gave me digitally. I've also learned a few traditional media techniques from the other artists I admire, which has opened up new avenues for me. I was even inspired to sign up for a watercolor class specifically to try it with fanart, and watercolor's a medium I always swore never to touch.
4. Do you prefer drawing your own scenarios, or drawing scenes from canon?
I'm a slash girl through-and-through, so mostly it's my own perverted scenarios.
5. What made you decide to draw fanart the first time? Which fandom was it?
My first fanfiction was Lord of the Rings (on fanfiction.net?) after the first movie came out. I got bored with that after a month, so I must have stumbled across a Harry Potter story, which probably led to slash writing, which led to slash art. When I saw the photomanips by JaCk, who ran parryhotter at the time, I was very inspired to do some of my own, since my drawing skills were crap but photo manipping is what I do for a living... so I made a series of animated gifs called "I'm Going Straight to Hell Theatre" where I cut scenes apart and animated them like old Monty Python stop-motion films. They were well received, so I showed a few of my crap sketches ... and now I've shown thirty or forty of my sketches here.
6. Who is your favourite fandom artist?
I hate this question! ... because I'm going to forget somebody and feel terrible. fiendling has drawn some of the hottest things I've ever seen and I'm in awe of her raw talent to compose scenes from scratch, plus her non-HP art is gorgeous. nasubionna was one of my earliest fandom friends (plus she's a freakishly nice person) and she was a big inspiration to get more active in the communities. Thinking back to those days, I was also into Duckpuppy, lizardspots and halogirl8 (who deserves much behind-the-scenes love.) glockgal, seviet, and sherant both have jaw-dropping art skills, but I'm a weirdo and consider them their own fandoms with that many watchers. yukipon has some snarry chan that's so fabulous it makes me forget that I hate anime. cluegirl doesn't do a lot of art but I still adore her because her fic is ball-draining (don't get me started on favorite ficcers!) hp_art_daily has made me much more familiar with people's work and brought some new-to-me people to my flist, like cork and rexluscus who I can't believe I wasn't fangirling earlier. spooy has an adorable style and the cuteness of mneomosyne's or brevisse's work slays me. cnary_crem_dght has brought a unique and interesting fanart style to my attention. ac1d6urn's snarry art is so beautiful it makes me want to throw my computer through a window out of jealousy. Someday I'll convince tapedeck to sell me prints of her Snape art. There's probably six more, but those are the ones that come to mind tonight. ;-)
7. Have you ever been inspired to draw fanart for a fanfiction work? Why?
Hell yes! HP is lucky to have so many awesome writers involved, we really are spoiled. (We're spoiled for art too, which I'm finding out from my new obsession with Doctor Who.) Sometimes the best way to thank a writer for creating something you admire is to draw them something they inspired. I bet they really appreciate it and you're giving more exposure to a story you liked. Art's the ultimate rec. There are three or four writers I adore and wish my art was as hot as their stories. If I can keep them feeling loved to produce more stuff for me to read, it's a beautiful relationship.
8. What are your favourite mediums to work with?
Even though I consider myself a whiz with photoshop, I have very little painting skills and no tablet, so my attempts at CG color are merely above average. Mostly, I draw at my desk with a mechanical pencil on a sheet of typing paper. I clean it up after scanning, but that method seems to get me my favorite results.
9. Do you have a piece of art (fandom or original) you've done that you are most proud of? Would you link it here for us?
I'm never happy with my original art, so I'll stick to fanart for now. I'm in the process of uploading everything to The Pervart Archive for people to check out, otherwise they can look at my userinfo to see links to my archives.
10. Are you excited about the Snarry Games?
Snarry is my OTP, so to have this many like-minded and talented people in one location is incredible. I think it's awesome that people volunteer to run livejournal fests such as these, and they deserve so much thanks because of all the joy they bring us as watchers. I love this fandom!
Thank you, pervart!
