Your Name (and lj name if different): elinevere
Your Games Team: Team Angst (teamangst_art)
1. What made you decide on Team Angst?
To be honest, I didn’t really choose for either, just asked to be put wherever a spot was open for me… But now the whole thing’s started, I think I’m happier with Angst than with Romance. I think angst presents a bit more of a challenge, because you need to incorporate the element of Snarry romance too, not to mention team Romance won the Games last time!
2. Which HP character is your favourite to create in art?
Oooh, I don’t think I have a favourite yet! I tend to draw Snape more often than others, but that’s because with him, I get closer to the picture I have in my mind than with any of the other characters. He’s a fascinating subject; it’s always a struggle to really get his expression, there’s never just one thing written in his face, a certain ambiguity is present in every single aspect of the man, that is the challenge for me.
I’m always a bit scared and intimidated to draw Harry himself, even though he is my favourite character by far. When I close my eyes I can see his features in detail in my mind, but to copy that image onto something concrete, is always disappointing - every slightest thing not exactly like I’ve got it pictured mentally, will distort the rest of my drawing too. In short, it’s never my Harry I draw, and I don’t know if I’m getting any closer. I’ll just have to keep trying. Tragic thing, that. *winks*
3. Has your experience in fandom changed the way you do art? How?
Yes, fandom has made me experiment more with colour and CG! It’s a very stimulating environment, I think, and without it I would have been much less eager to keep drawing. It’s great for inspiration, I’ve really learned how to plan the way I want something to look, instead of just copying paintings like I used to. Fandom gives me thousands of beautiful brain films, and I only need to click the stop button to get a new idea for art. I don’t know many places that are so diverse in their own right, and with such a friendly and welcome atmosphere too!
4. Do you prefer drawing your own scenarios, or drawing scenes from canon?
I haven’t really attempted canon scenes, because – like with Harry – they’re things I’ve read and imagined time upon time, and I really want to do them justice when I draw them. Detail, accuracy, and a hell of a lot of time are what they need. So I’m just taking the easy route right now. Don’t blame me…
5. What made you decide to draw fanart the first time? Which fandom was it?
I think that would be Sleeping Beauty when I was 3 years old. *winks* I do remember the first time I did Harry Potter fanart, though! I’ll give you the whole history; what’s an interview without a bit of juice, eh? It was the summer that book 4 came out - I’d passed an important exam, so was allowed to read the only copy my mum had bought first (my mum herself and my two sisters were jumping in line). I started reading in the afternoon, and only came from my room for dinner that evening. Everyone was asking what the story was like so far, and the only thing I told them – with glee – was “Dudley’s on a diet!”. Two days afterwards, we went to France for a couple of weeks of holiday, and I remember my youngest sister had finally read it last, and she was so distraught by the death of Cedric, that she kept asking my mum to read the story to us. My mum made us all a cup of hot chocolate, and sat down on the couch and read from GOF. I was sitting in a chair and mulling over the story, and after my mum was finished reading to us, I took a piece of paper and a pencil and started doodling Harry’s face as I imagined it when his and Voldemort’s wands connect in the graveyard scene. I was completely frustrated that it looked totally different from the way I wanted it to. So that’s where my whole thing starts, I suppose.
6. Who is your favourite fandom artist?
The whole of Team Angst, of course!
7. Have you ever been inspired to draw fanart for a fanfiction work? Why?
Yes, I have. When a story keeps spinning through my head a whole day long, I can’t help but imagining how I’d draw it. There needs to be that certain atmosphere to a story, a mood that will colour my drawing - literally! I did fanart for Abide The Sleeper, and am still working slowly on a piece for Dangling Conversation (a story from the last Snarry Games, also team Angst!).
8. What are your favourite mediums to work with?
I love working with black pencil on paper, and pastels. I tried acrylic and oil paint a couple of years ago and loved it, but need some more practical experience with those. Watercolours are not really my best medium, unfortunately; I’m too much of a control freak in my drawings to let it flow properly. I detest charcoal! It makes my fingers itch in a bad way, like nails on a chalkboard do. I’ve been using Open Canvas 4.03 a lot lately, and enjoy working with it very much, mostly because it’s a lovely mix of all media, and it doesn’t give all the fuss and mess as real material.
9. Do you have a piece of art (fandom or original) you've done that you are most proud of? Would you link it here for us?
I usually am most happy with my latest piece, but since my last few were sort of quickies… I loved working on Snape the Murderer, because it was such a long and delicate process. I was much more patient and less frustrated - almost serene - while drawing it than with my other pieces. I think it shows!
Good Morning, Harry is the most enthusiastic piece. It really shows the frenzy-like quality I get in, when I’m working very hard on something. Usually, this frenzy and more observing moods follow each other, but I this piece was like a tsunami of the first!
Lastly, I personally quite like the Treefrog!Harry I did for nimori’s Animagus challenge. I like to work with online drawing programs like Artpad every now and then, and this one challenged me to the max. Near the end, Artpad was so slow, it took about a minute for the program to follow my mouse-movements. When you look at Harry’s four paws, you’ll see that the ones I completed first, are much more detailed…
10. Are you excited about the Snarry Games?
Oh yes! I definitely am! I love working with all the artists, and want to thank the whole of Team Angst already, because it’s such a capable and sociable group, always someone ready to help - team Romance will be hard beat to compete with us! *waves Angst banner*
Thank you, elinevere!
