INTERVIEW # 26
Original poster: snarrymod
Your Name (and lj name, if different): Ziasudra (ziasudra_fic is my fandom journal)
Your Team: Team Romance
1. What made you decide to agree to compete in these games?
When I got the first e-mail about the Snarry Games, I was refreshing the comm over and over just to see who decided to join. It wasn’t until a day later when the idea of actually participating occurred to me. I like Snarry, I like the concept of a friendly competition with the goal of generating more fics, so why not? Of course, my inner voice chose that moment to remind me I had RL obligations to tend to, stopping me from signing up right then and there. But after a day or so of internal debate, I realized there was really no point in not participating, so I threw my name in for a slot on the team.
2. Why did you choose the Romance Team?
At the moment of signup I very much wanted to make Snape and Harry happy, so I chose Team Romance.
3. Have you always been interested in the Severus Snape/Harry Potter dynamic?
Yes. Whenever Snape and Harry share the same scene in canon, there’s always this intensity that no two other characters have quite managed to generate. As their animosity grows in canon, so does that intensity. Wanting to see how this dynamic plays out beyond JKR’s pages was what got me started reading Snape/Harry fics. That was about two years ago. I haven’t stopped since. *g*
4. What is more challenging to you – working WITH strict canon or working AROUND strict canon?
I think I’ve done both in almost all the stories I’ve written. I don’t separate the two, at least not in the sense of keeping one part of the story canon while deliberately trying to get around canon in others. The Harry Potter universe exists because of canon, so canon’s always going to be a living and breathing reality with every fic I write. What takes place in those stories—the non-canon stuff—is the whole point of fanfiction. To me, the challenge lies in integrating both in a believable fashion.
5. What motivates you?
A gripping plot bunny is what inspires me and compels me to write. But after the initial flurry of jotting down scenes and sketching a rough outline, what really keeps me writing is the idea of a deadline. I have plenty of unfinished stories sitting in my hard drive, but so far I’ve finished all fics with deadlines tagged onto them. I’m such a slave to structure ;)
6. Do you have plans for (or are you already writing) original fiction?
Not at the moment. My RL writings are all nonfiction, and it’d be too much on my plate if I also try to write original fiction.
7. What three things are necessary for you to enjoy a story you are reading?
Good plot unfolded with tight writing. I love the feeling of getting pulled into a story. I love it even more if the author gives me reason to remain there until the very last word.
Stories that make me think. The most successful stories are the ones I remember days, weeks, months after I first read them, ones that keep me wondering the what ifs and the how comes.
A basic grasp of all the building blocks of writing: good grammar, characterization, overall story structure, etc.
8. What are your Top 5 favourite fanfiction stories?
The Bloody Stare of Mars, by yahtzee63. It’s not Snarry; in fact, it’s SS/HG, but above all it’s a story about post-war revolution. This is one of those stories that sticks with me long after I finished reading it.
Clipped Wings, by tekalynn. SS/HP. This is just one of those stories that I really, really like and would read over and over again when I want to curl up and read a good fic.
Every Time You Leave, by mia_ugly. SS/HP. I feel weird listing a story that I beta’d, but this is a favourite even if I’d stumbled across it through a random search.
In Between Days, by atrata. SS/HP. I love Atra’s ambiguous!Snape. I liked this story enough to have followed it as a WIP. From someone who 9 out of 10 times would wait until a story is finished before reading it, that’s saying a lot.
The Pendulum of Choice series, by rushlight75. This is entirely not SS/HP. I like it for its AU-ness, for the exquisite exploration of character loyalties and “what ifs” that fit within a bigger arc of Harry’s self-discovery.
9. Do you have a story (any fandom) you’ve done that you are most proud of? Would you link it here for us?
I really like Cold. It’s a story that I would reread and think, “Hey, it’s pretty good!”
10. Are you excited about the Games?
YES!!!
Thank you, and good luck!
Thank you, ziasudra_fic!
