Team Snitch Entry (FIC): "If Only" by Jadzialove
Title: If Only
Author: [info]jadzialove
Team: Snitch!
Genre(s): Time Travel
Prompt(s): Consequences, Seeking Knowledge
Rating/Warnings/Kinks: Rated NC17; Highlight if you wish to know: *EWE, Character Death(s) ... sort of ... but not really .... You'll see, just trust me. Brief, non-explicit, non-Snarry pairing.*
Word Count: ~13,500
Author Notes/Disclaimers/Betas: In this tale you will find bits of dialogue from the books. Specifically (and in order of appearance), an excerpt from the chapter of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix called, Snape's Worst Memory and from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Chapter Eight, called, Flight of the Fat Lady. So I must credit J.K. Rowling with that, as well as Harry Potter's world in its entirety (I do not own Harry Potter, he owns me.). As this story is Snape's POV, only the actual dialogue was borrowed, and in both instances, not the entire thing, since the time lines are altered. Hopefully this will make sense after you've read it. Huge Thank Yous to: our esteemed Capitan, [info]joanwilder for her SuperBeta skillz, and for once again taking the reins and being our fearless leader; to [info]blamebrampton for Brit-picking and wordsmithing as well as her knowledge of 1970s London; to [info]veridari & [info]torino10154 for early reading, inspiration (art! even), and general encouragement; and to Team Snitch for the sharp eyes and support. Biggest thanks of all go to DJ and the other Games Mods for inviting me to play! It's been awesome. Thank you!

Summary: Things look rather dire for Severus Snape, until he awakens in a strange room, where he learns 'What Might Have Been' and whether or not he has the mettle to embrace 'What Could Be'.

OMG! That was simply amazing! I like Snarry but I love Snupin and it was nice to see how you paired the two of them up in one scene. Sad to see them all die, but it was believable. It was great seeing how Severus tried hard not to look in the pensieve, lol. He's full of curiousity ^_^ Albus's meddling turned out to be for Severus's greater good and allowed him to have a reward for all his loyalty and difficult life. Great job! :D

*huge happy sigh*

You already know how much I adored your story. I feel so priviledged I that I got to "read as you wrote." Every scenario behind each door started out with so much hope, and then to get so cruelly dashed at the end. And everyone of them quite original...early on I wouldn't have minded any of them being a good choice, if our Snape had found happiness there.

But of course, it was the scenario of his relationship with Harry that was the best! I kind of felt like I *was* Severus...wandering the house with him and discovering what indeed he had found with Harry - and I loved how badly he avoided the pensieve at first, but was drawn to it daily inspite of himself. I felt total glee when he wanted the relationship by the time Harry came home. (We did too, Harry!)

Another great story by you that will go into my "favorite re-reads" pile for certain (along with quite a few others of yours, I might add)!

I really got into those what-if scenarios. They were all fantastic to read, but I did like Snape with baby Harry the best out of all the what-ifs. The what-could-be was even more wonderful. So sweet and wonderful and the buildup of sexual frustration for Snape was wonderfully written. I'm so glad you gave them both such a lovely ending together. :) Great job!

Fantastic look at what could have been!

I love the way Snape resigned himself to being a Gryffindor, only to find it ended worse than his reality.
What really made my day was the way he ran away from the 'obscene' memories....lmao!
Wonderful.Top marks.

You did such a great job with this! I've always loved 'what if' scenarios (my very first fic I ever wrote was a Snarry 'what if', but certainly nothing compared to yours!!!)

This just grabbed me and reeled me in. I love the different scenarios you came up with and how at first they seemed like better alternatives to Severus' real life, only to turn out so horribly bad.

But then in the end, everything that he lived through paid of with something good, if only he chose it, and the way you slowly developed his desire (and the reader's desire FOR him) to have that possible life, to the point he is desperately screaming 'to go back' for it - it just gave me chills.

Wonderful story, wonderful use of prompts - a perfect example of what a Snarry story should be.

I like all the what-ifs and the way each choice affects the rest - very ingenious! The what-will is best of all, of course. Loved it!

I loved this! I'm glad that Snape got to realise how vital his choices were. Like Whitestar above I also like a bit of Snupin and so liked not only that what-if pairing but also Snape's unexpected sadness when he realises Teddy is an orphan.

I shall be re-reading this many times.

this is such a great story! I love the idea, but mostly because you executed it so very well. Especially interesting how, even in the last what-if, he's still mostly watching himself / watching the past, with harry, rather than being with him.
Beautifully done! : )

This was amazing. I loved seeing Severus *Hall of Regrets*, he made an interesting Gryffindor, the relationship with Lupin was a nice touch. The modified Syltherin Severus was nice to see as well especially his interactions with baby!Harry. The slightly nicer Professor Snape in the third *regret* turned out to be not such a good idea, Voldemort will always use anything and everything against Harry. I adore Albus, he's still being manipulative even in the afterlife. And what a choice/glimpse of a future with Harry, Severus would have to have been totally stupid to turn it down. The last paragraph was just beautitufl (I'm repeating it here cause I love it so much)

Opening his eyes, he found Potter staring down at him, concern mixed oddly with the growing smile on Potter's lips. Severus gave Potter's hand a squeeze and nodded, despite the remaining pain in his neck, meeting the green eyes and very nearly smiling in return with the knowledge of what lay ahead for them.

YAY! I love, love, LOVE this fic. I truly adore the alternate realities and all the things that could have been and yet still weren't 'right'. Most especially the absolute canon truth that Severus had to beg for Lily's life for Harry to have survived. I shuddered at the prospect of Harry as Voldemort's pet. But of course the future is just so spectacular-Severus escaping the obscene memories *giggles* and the way he's just desperate for Harry to get home by the end. Perfect ending, darling. Thank you for allowing me the privilege of watching you work. *hugs* Brava!

I loved the idea for this story when you first floated it, but had no idea how perfectly you would execute it. It's such a satisfying read, and so many of Snape's possible lives were so plausible that I wished you had time to write each one of them in full and not as simple snatches. Above all, the humanity of the characters is so rich and rewarding to read. Beautifully done!

What a wonderful story. I think my favourite sequences were Gryffindor!Severus and the one with his dealings with infant!Harry. I loved how you set the scenes for each scenario so masterfully - I was sucked into each of these what-might-have-beens immediately. The what-would-be was lovely also: chuck-full of all these little details that let me discover this reality alongside Severus. Thank you!

I love getting a bit of Snupin in my Snarry, thank you. When Severus lost Lupin that first time it was wrenching.
I loved the alternate universes, and that they were purely for illustration and illumination and growth, not to make Severus stress and choose a different course of his life - that would he pure hell. You hit me hard with his life with Harry, just the nibble on the ear and I was lost. Nnngh!
You also hit me with Severus being part of baby Harry's life, and the poor thing being killed. I love examining how every tiny detail made a difference.
Very enjoyable fic.

This was way cool. I loved all the alternatives as well as the future one. It was excellent to see Dumbledore at the end there, just like he'd been for Harry. And the HEA...happy sigh.

You nailed the prompts too. Yay, team snitch.

Loved it. Excellent job.
